Discussion

Prosodic Features of Speech

-known as supra-segmental phonology

There are various conventional ways of representing them in writing, although the nuances are often hard to
convey on paper.

1. Pause - is a break, temporary stop, or rest in speaking (or reading) to emphasize or clarify meaning

Pause

Appropriate pausing helps to impart clarity in what you are saying. It can
also be used in such a way that your main points will make a lasting impression.

When to Pause

1. Pause to Punctuate

When you fail to pause when required by punctuation, you make it difficult for

others to understand what you are reading aloud or saying.

2. Pause for Change of Thought

When you are making a transition from one main point to another, a pause

can give your listener/s an opportunity to reflect, to adjust, to recognize the

change in direction, and to grasp more clearly the next thought about to be

presented.

3. Pause for Emphasis

A pause for emphasis gives your listener/s the opportunity to reflect on what

has just been said, or it creates anticipation for what is to follow.

4. Pause to Allow for Response

2. Pitch-highness and lowness of the voice

3. Stress- is the emphasis placed on a sound, syllable, or word by saying it relatively more loudly and forcefully

4. Volume-apart from the slight increase in loudness to indicate stress, volume generally used to show emotions
such as fear or anger

5. Tempo- or speed is to some extent a matter of idiolect.

The Speech Problem

-speaking in monotonous voice

-lack of appropriate vocal variety

The Benefits of Enunciation

As your enunciation improves, your listeners will;

-Form a better impression of you as you speak, thinking of you as an educated, knowledgeable person, more
worthy of trust.

-be better able to focus on the message you’re communicating, rather than being distracted by the way you’re
expressing yourself.

GENERALIZATION
