Lecturette

Some of the characteristics that capture the essence of a culture in an organization or a

group include innovation, risk-taking, attention to detail, and being team & outcome oriented. As
a group performs a particular task, they are able to establish a set of beliefs and standards on how
to achieve their common goal, come up with a basis for the shared understanding between the
members, specify how things are done in it, and the way they are supposed to behave as they
finish a task.

For a group to successfully accomplish their assigned task, they must be able to
effectively communicate with each other and have a sense of having a shared goal. In addition,
listening to each others’ ideas also contributes to a more interactive engagement on members in
the group. Aside from having teamwork in the group, the aforementioned attributes such as
innovation and attention to detail is also necessary. Creativity and innovation within a group
have always been recognized as a path to success; having innovation means providing ideas out
of the blue, leading to significant discoveries and achievements. Their own shared goals and
strategies are what distinguish them from the other groups. Lastly, having ability to achieve
thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task is an important thing a group must
remember. Even under a time pressure, the saying, “slowly but surely” must be always kept in
mind.

In a bigger picture, the set of behavior among employees within the same work
environment is what makes up their organizational culture. They includes the way they act and
engage with the organization, the values they attribute to these actions, their personal goals and
how these fit in with the goals of the organization, and how they engage with each other at work.
Despite of work diversity, organizational culture serves as driver of decisions, actions, and
ultimately the overall performance of the organization.

All in all, having a culture among group of people are not limited to those who are in the
workplace. Everyone that is a part of an organization has their own culture. Nevertheless, the
main goal of every organization is to successfully accomplish a certain task and the
organizational culture plays an important role to that thus, without a strong culture, values and
beliefs are not strongly adhered and shared widely within them, increasing the possibility of
failure.
