LITHONIA

Community celebrates newly

renovated Lithonia playground
BY CARLA PARKER
Carla@dekalbchamp.com

Summer campers in Lithonia had

an opportunity to play on a newly
renovated playground at Lithonia
Park July 15.
DeKalb County and city of
Lithonia officials gathered at the
playground for a ribbon cutting
ceremony to celebrate the renovated
playground. The renovation project
was funded by special purpose local
option sales tax (SPLOST) and park
bonds. Chuck Ellis, DeKalb County
director of recreation, parks and
cultural affairs, said $400,000 was
allocated from SPLOST and DeKalb Lithonia Mayor Deborah Jackson gives remarks during the ribbon cutting ceremony.
County commissioners Mereda
Davis Johnson and Lorraine
Cochran-Johnson.
“In addition, I’m happy to
announce that SPLOST funding will
also aid the restoration of the pavilion
and [Lithonia] pool,” Ellis said. “It is
my hope that playground and future
upgrades will bring rejuvenation to
the community to promote healthier
lifestyles among the children and
adults in our area.”
Cochran-Johnson said she was
proud to be a part of the vote that
allocated funds for the park. A camper enjoys the slide on the newly renovated playground.
“I can remember taking a look at
what had been done and reviewing
the parks in my district and I’m very
proud to see this happen because
we needed to address parks within
Lithonia,” she said. “I want to
reiterate my commitment. What
we’re doing here today is celebrating
moving forward, but we’re not done.”
The 50-acre Lithonia Park is
jointly owned by DeKalb County
and Lithonia. Lithonia Mayor
Deborah Jackson said the city and
county worked hard to complete the
renovation project.
“We met as part of a visioning
for the park about a year ago and
this was one of the things that we
wanted to see happen in terms of
the improvements to the playground
area, upgrading the pavilion, and
there is much more to come,” Jackson
said. “We all worked together to get
this done because it’s really about
community.” The Lithonia Park playground was recently renovated. A young boy plays on a swing on Lithonia Park’s playground.
