There was a trend I was starting to notice on the rise in the design
community, and not a good one. There were a lot of designers and
artists across the web getting their work stolen. In textiles, pattern
making and graphics that were going viral thanks to social media in
an effort to put their imitators on blast that otherwise would have
slipped under the radar.
Rewind to 2014, Mel Lay, owner of Sandilake Clothing and Ryonet
customer gets an excited call from a close friend saying she saw
Mel’s design in a local Target store. Confused and a bit panicked, Mel
walked into Target, and pulled her “#MERICA” shirt right off the rack.
Not having any prior conversations with Target, their buyers, or team
of creatives she realizes that her design had been copied and now
sold in one of the largest retail chains in the United States.
When you’re creating things and doing something you love, you don’t even think,
because it’s such a passion that someone would take it from you.
Mel posted the image on Instagram and as luck would have it, the local
nightly news picked up the story within 12 hours of the design sighting.
Within a day, her story was covered by Good Morning America, The Today
Show, Time.com, Buzzfeed and after 48 hours, Target issued a public re-
sponse and took the design out of their stores without legal action needed
up to that point.
What Now? Someone actually ripped this
design off and to a potential national level.
She was able to get in touch of the third party contracted manufactur-
er who would tell her that someone in-house found the design on Pinter-
est and made the copy. They weren’t going to do much besides offer Mel a
job that she would then decline.
“ I just want to build up my own company, and at the same time I was
getting hundreds of orders for just this one design from the support. At
one point I had up to 1000 open orders, when I was just use to having a
dozen in every size, so I had to figure out how I was going to get all these
shirts in, printed and shipped out. So why would I want to work for some-
one that would steal from me?”
While Target was using an outside manufacturer and designer that was
behind this, Mel would bring in her lawyer for discussions with Target’s
legal team. She wanted to spin it, as a positive way, to work with and buy
from a mom, it would be awesome to see local presence in a large
retailer. But they wanted none of it and needed the story to just go away.
Since Mel did not copyright her design, she had no leg to stand on. Subse-
quently after going viral, handfuls of other businesses were popping up
on Etsy also taking advantage of the #MERICA design for their own gain.
“
When you come up with this organic idea, to make something
you’re excited about it, there’s a lot of work, time and money that goes
behind making things and creating. And I honestly didn’t think it would
ever catch on. It was just to be a hobby, not necessarily to make money.
So when you’re creating things and doing something you love, you
don’t ever think, because it’s such a passion that someone would
“ type. Heck, even some creative people are better at pho-

After I first heard about Mel’s story and having a similar experience of
my own, I really wanted to dig deeper into why its so easy for people and
corporations to get away with this. Anyone that I’ve talked with says the
same thing, that we’re so occupied with the creation of either a brand or
design, and customer experience, the last thing we are thinking about is
protecting ourselves. And how do we even think about copyrighting all of
our images when we can’t afford it, let alone how to do it? “They” can get
away with it because we don’t know how to protect ourselves.
By sitting down with Mel, and asking some tough ques-
tions, I realized afterwards there are two great things
that can help us bring awareness to this issue. It’s the
support of each other, and the education on the subject.
There are folks out there, possibly reading this now that
don’t know the rules. I’ve talked to people who honestly
think that because something comes up on a Google
search they have rights to it. I thought I would open up
some dialog to this because I know there are so many
parts to running a business that this might not be the
top of your priority list. Either because there’s no time or
you genuinely don’t know where to start. Here’s a start.
E D U C AT E
These are some of the fundamental rules taught to any
designer or artist or writer. Don’t steal. You’re here to cre-
ate. Ideas are at our fingertips these days and it’s so easy
to go to Pinterest or Google to find anything you want,
but does that give you the right to do it and monetize on
that? No. How easy is it to take a screen shot, recreate
quickly in Illustrator or Photoshop, print out a film and
start printing money? Very easy. Does it mean you have
the right to do it? Nope.
For example, if you just pull down the Star Wars logo
from Google, and you want to start selling them online,
they have a team of people fielding the web for any in-
stance of their trademarked and copyrighted images
and will take you down. If you can’t get away with it on
that level, it should tell you it’s not OK on any level.

Find your originality - Get a sketch pad, a roll of paper,
a white board. Sketch out your ideas. Throw out words
that inspire you, along with shapes and make revisions.
Add textures. Play with color. Be original.
Find your capabilities - Not everyone is a creative

new things she had in store for herself, her family
and Sandilake. Getting back to where Sandilake came from, and it’s roots is what
she is most excited about returning to. While all the hype helped others gain aware-
ness about an issue to the independent maker community, it also helped Mel grow as
a business owner, just trying to run her home screen printing shop the safest and

Hire a creative - There are some great resources out
there for images, and graphics created by people
wanting to create for you that wont break the bank.

ators across many different applications. Logos, shirt
design, branding, etc.
Raise awareness - This goes beyond screen printing,
it crosses many industries. If you happen to see
someone you follow posting about their specific tat-
too design or web banner, or patterns being stolen
first know that it’s a really shitty feeling. For a mo-
ment, sometimes longer it can discourage them from
continuing to create or sharing with the public and if
you want to keep seeing genuine content, go repost
and support them. It could go viral like Mel’s and help
a bad situation be a little more tolerable.

Meet Kevin and Raul aka Calimucho and one of
our class partners, are some of the most down to
earth dudes who are more than excited to pass
down their screen printing wisdom. Joined by
the punk scene in the late 90’s, the duo has been
printing and serving San Pedro, CA loyally
through their community, schools, live music
events and skate shops. We are excited for them
to have joined our arsenal of educators, and we
wanted to sit down with them to know what
keeps them slinging ink.
How did you get into screen printing?
RAUL - “My junior high and high school both
offered graphic arts classes, that I took full ad-
vantage of as electives. By the time I had started
high school, I was also into music. So I naturally
started doing really bad prints of hand drawn
band shirts in class…first tee was a crude draw-
ing of a DESCENDENTS album cover. Fast for-
ward a few years, and I decided to start doing it
for my own bands, and it grew from there, and is
still growing.”
KEVIN - “ I first was exposed to screen printing
in my high school art class, our teacher had a
press and dryer that we were never allowed to
“
use. One day we got to make stickers, 30 kids art
on one screen 2inches by 2inches per design, not
too fulfilling . Next was a few years later being in
a touring punk band and embracing the value of
DIY(do it yourself), I wanted to have my hands
on every piece of any process and screen print-
ing tshirts, records, and tour posters were part of
the process. “
What’s your favorite part of the pro-
cess or your day?
KEVIN - “My favorite part of the process is see-
ing things for the first time. Seeing art that a cli-
ent or artist has sent over, seeing the film come
out of the printer, seeing the screen come to life
in the exposing process, seeing the first test print
happen all that hard work and different stages
