Video Cards
If you experience "slow response" on the User Interface, verify that your video driver is the latest available
for your operating system. Many vendors will make updated drivers available on their website.

USB Ports
Some early systems may have chipsets that do not work well with the USB port on your 510 Series printer.
You may find additional information and updates at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q240/0/75.asp or http://www.viatech.com.

USB Modems
If you experience problems with USB modems, please contact your modem manufacturer for updated
software.

Dell BIOS upgrades

With some older versions of Dell BIOS, your Lexmark 510 Series may experience communication
problems. You may find additional information and updates at http://support.dell.com

Speeding up your system

•Print in Normal or Quick Print mode if possible.
•Remove as many unused fonts as possible from your system.
•While printing, close all unnecessary software applications.
•Increase computer memory.

No communication with your 510 Series

If communications problems occur while printing through a USB Hub, remove the Hub and connect your
printer directly to the computer. If communications errors persist, please follow these steps:
•Unplug your Printer Power Supply for 30 seconds.
•Plug the Power Supply back in.
•Make sure the printer is turned on.
•Make sure USB cable is connected at both ends.
•Restart your Computer.

Print quality and color issues

Printouts are too dark or fuzzy
Some software applications have their own halftoning and color correction methods. If possible, disable
these functions in the application. Generally, the Lexmark 510 Series driver's halftoning and color
correction methods produce better results.

"Out of Memory" message with high print quality

If you receive this message while using Best or Better print quality, try using Normal print quality instead.

High Resolution Printing

There are many applications on the market, such as Adobe Photoshop(TM), Corel Draw, Microsoft(R)
Access, Microsoft WordPad and Microsoft Publisher, that apparently do not support high resolution
printing (i.e., 4800dpi). If you encounter problems using the high quality setting, try printing at the normal
quality setting (i.e., select Normal from the driver).

To set High quality in the driver for all documents:

•Windows 98 and 2000: Click Start-Settings-Printers. The Printers folder appears
•Windows XP: Click start-control panel-printers and other hardware-printers and faxes
•Right-click the Lexmark 510 Series printer icon and click Printer Preferences or Properties
•From the Quality/Copies tab, choose Better as the Quality/Speed
•Click OK

Bidirectional support
If you go thru Printer Properties for your Lexmark 510 Series and turn off bidirectional support, your
printer will not function.

Printing dpi
Many applications report resolution to the user as part of a printer interface. The Lexmark 510 Series will
report (communicate) a maximum of 600 dpi (dots per inch) to the application. The Lexmark 510 Series
driver prints at up to 4800 dpi while reporting 600 dpi to the application.

Communication failure after installing a second Lexmark printer

If your Lexmark 510 Series is already installed, and you install a second certified Lexmark printer on your
system, some newer Lexmark 510 Series files may be overwritten by older files of the same name during
the second installation. Microsoft certified components always overwrite existing files, regardless of
date/timestamp or version number. This could cause your Lexmark 510 Series to not communicate. If this
happens, uninstall and then reinstall your Lexmark 510 Series.

DOS Printing
The Lexmark 510 Series does not support printing from DOS

Removing the 510 Series Software

After you install the Lexmark 510 Series software, the Lexmark 510 Series program group appears under
Start-Programs. To remove the Lexmark 510 Series printer driver from your computer system, use the
Uninstall utility. The icon for this utility is located in the Lexmark 510 Series group.
To uninstall the printer software from the Windows Start menu:
•Select Programs
•Select Lexmark 510 Series
•Select Uninstall Lexmark 510 Series
•Follow the instructions on your screen to restart your computer if needed

WINDOWS 2000/XP
Virtual Memory
Many printing problems can be eliminated by making sure you have at least 128 MB of RAM and setting
Virtual Memory Initial Size to at least 286MB for Windows 2000 and 300MB for Windows XP. You
should also set the Virtual Memory Maximum Size to at least 400MB. Check your Windows Help system
on your PC for information on how to do this.
Start menu, select Help

Adobe Photoshop
In Adobe PhotoShop 5.x, if you are logged into Windows 2000 as a user without administrator access,
when you choose the Print, CMYK Setup, Profile Setup, or Profile to Profile command PhotoShop returns
the error "Could not complete the [command name] command because of a disk error.". This is a known
