15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
St Paul sums up the essential message
in today’s reading: “make hospitality your
special care”, in his letter to the Romans.
In our first reading (Gen. 18), when
Abraham gave hospitality to three
strangers he did not realise that he was
entertaining God himself. This concept
must reflect the words of Jesus: ‘I was
hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, in prison and
you came to my help” – and then the
question, “when did we see you hungry …
and came to your help?” “As long as you did
this to my brothers and sisters, you did it to
me!”
Jesus appears in our lives in many
different disguises. Do we recognise him,
and do what we can to help? Keep in mind
the story of the Good Samaritan we heard
of last Sunday.
We have the story of the two sisters,
Martha and Mary. Here we are faced with
that challenging aspect of life. How do we
keep the balance between a life of prayer
/meditation and a life of action. The fact is,
that we need both prayer and action in
order to serve God and others.
Notice in the Gospel story, it was
Martha who welcomed Jesus into her
house. She offered hospitality to Jesus and
his hungry friends. Mary decided to sit at
the feet of Jesus and listen to his every
word. That too is hospitality!
Imagine inviting friends to your home
and leave them sitting alone in the sitting
room, while you spend all the time cooking
in the kitchen! Both forms of
hospitality and welcome for Jesus is
essential in our lives. It is not easy to
juggle the two aspects together. The two
aspects of our human and divine call need
to be moulded together. It is a philosophy
of life we need so that the spiritual and
human are integrated. It is an on-going
challenge and this effort is what enriches
our lives.
Sometimes we can misunderstand
what is important to others. We can be
anxious about doing things for them when
the important is to give them time and
listen to them. Similarly we need to spend
time listening to God’s word. This is what
enriches our relationship.

folks.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
Saturdays, 4:00pm-5:45pm
plus Mass 6:00pm
A programme for adults who are interested
in receiving the Sacrament of Baptism,
First Communion or Confirmation in the
Catholic Church. It is also open for anyone
who would like to explore their faith more.
First session: 19th October 2019
PARISH OUTREACH
SANDWICH MAKING (PREPARATION):
In the parish hall on Fri. 26th July after Mass.
Volunteers are urgently needed on
Saturday mornings at 7:30am to help with
preparing the sandwiches, soups, tea and
coffee. Also needed are volunteer drivers.

 THE ALPHA COURSE
All proceeds will be in aid
of The Passage.
The Alpha Course has now
finished.
About 30 people attended each week and
had the opportunity to consider questions
such as Who Is Jesus? Who Is the Holy
Spirit? Does God Heal Today? Over the 12
sessions there was a growing feeling of the
work of the Holy Spirit. We are coming back
together on Monday 22 July at 7.15 to
reflect on Alpha and how we can share and
build on our experience.

125 YEARS OF JESUIT EDUCATION AT
ST IGNATIUS COLLEGE
‘St Ignatius College will be celebrating 125
years of Jesuit education at the college on
Friday 20th September 2019 with a formal
celebration dinner. Tickets are priced at £75
and are available now on Eventbrite. The
ticket price includes a welcome drink, 3
course meals and half a bottle of wine per
person. Any proceeds from the event will go
