Estradiot .t7-B ho.mone profile were studied during the estrus cycle in
forrr ptrrebrecl Ratlri cows belonging to the college dairy herd 4 months post-
partum. Animals were closely observed prior to and during the anticipated
estrus. Blood was collected in tubes containing EDTA prior to estrus (day 0),
B hrs after the first signs of estrus blood Waq again collected and then
collected at 24 hrly intervals for 6 days'and then every 4 days till the.
subsequent estrus. Plasma was separated by centrifugation and stored at-
200 C till {urther assay. Plasma estradioal 17-B was estimated by,'RlA as
per previousiy described methods (Pbltu etal 1996). The overall meaff
estradiol before estrus, on the day of estrus and on the 5th, loth 14th, 18th
and 22nd day of estrus wasi.B.00 t 1.88, 10.15 t 2.18 ,4.97 t 0.43, 6'.75
i 6.75 t 1.15,5.93 + 1.50,6.09 + 6'Og t 1'04 and 9'53 t 2'40 ng/mt'
r.espectively in the plasma. Peak E, concentration Was Seen on the day of
erstrus f ollowed by a decline 24 hrs later which reached to low levels ori
day5. Overall the estradiol concentration was found to be very low in
comparison to other breeds of cattle, probably due to a weak endocrine
status.
