Research experience in the field of stone disease

-Head of the Centre de Recherches et d'Informations Scientifiques et Techniques
Appliquées aux Lithiases (Laboratoire CRISTAL) since 1986. Laboratoire CRISTAL
is a referral center in France for stone analysis and research in the field of stone
disease, especially as concerns the correlations between pathophysiology of stone
disease and composition and structural features of the stones and crystals.
-Head of the Research group on Urolithiasis in the INSERM Research Unit U90
(1989-1996).
-Responsible for a National Quality Control Programme on stone analysis in France
since 1990 (including two surveys per year for stones and two surveys for crystals).
Forty laboratories from French-speaking countries take part in that Quality Control
Programme.
-Researcher in the INSERM Unit U702 (since 2011).

Scientific Societies and advisory boards

-Member of the French Society of Clinical Biology, of the French Society of
Nephrology, of the Urolithiasis Committee of the French Association of Urology, of
the International Society of Nephrology; -Honorary Member of the European
UroLithiasis Society (EULIS)

-Organizer of the Stone analysis and clinical application symposiums (1985-2002)

-Organizer of the annual Confrontations Clinico-Biologiques de l'Hôpital Necker sur
la Lithiase Urinaire (since 1996) (next in October 2013)
-Co-organizer of the 7th European Symposium on Urolithiasis (Paris, Mai 1997)

Main distinctions :
-Prize of the French Society of Clinical Biology 1979
-First prize of Biochemistry 1988 of the Paris XI University (PhD Thesis)
-Award of the European Association of Urology (EULIS section) 2011
Publications
-400 oral presentations and conferences in congress and scientific meetings
-460 scientific papers in national and international journals.
-Co-author of four books on stone disease or infrared and Raman stone analysis
-Author or co-author of 25 invited chapters in multi-authors books (in French or
English).
-Contribution to peer-review for about 20 national and international journals
Teaching activity
Participation to the teaching on stone disease for Nephrology, Urology and
Biochemistry students in various courses.
-Promoter and organizer of the French University Course on Urolithiasis (since 2001)

Main contribution in the field of stone disease

-Morpho-constitutional classification of stones
-Clinical interest of differentiating crystalline phases among calcium salts.
-Spectrophotometric crystallization model for assessing nucleation, growth and
aggregation
-First report on relationship between uric acid stones and diabetes type 2.
-Relationships between the body mass index of stone formers and stone composition
-Crystal analysis in renal biopsies based on infrared microscopy contributing to the
diagnosis of unrecognized pathologies (APRT deficiency, primary hyperoxaluria,
drug-induced nephropathies, ...)
-Epidemiological data on stone composition
-Management of liver kidney transplantation based on crystalluria studies to prevent
the loss of kidney function in primary hyperoxaluria
-Randall’s plaques studies
