for tenor saxophone and electronics

Program Notes
Alex Sellers, who is a wonderful saxophonist I meet during the Channel Noise festival at Georgia Southern University, commissioned
this piece in the spring of 2011. Trance State is a sonic depiction of what it might sound like undergoing an altered state of
consciousness. The prerecorded electronic sounds are panned randomly throughout while the saxophone is enhanced slightly through
the use of reverb. In addition, the chimes add an interesting timbre to piece.

Equipment Needed
1.) 1 set of chimes with stand: I have chosen to use the TRE35x EchoTree by TreeWorks. A set of chimes that “begins with a
group of five notes. That group repeats seven times over. Each time the sequence repeats it is lower in pitch.”
2.) 1 computer with audio interface (USB cable connecting them)
3.) 1 small table - for computer and audio interface
4.) 1 condenser microphone with stand and (XLR cables connecting them to interface)
Technical Notes
Trance State, like many of my electro-acoustic works makes the use of Pure Data as a means of triggering sound files and processing
real-time digital sound. Pure Data Extended may be downloaded here. http://puredata.info/community/projects/software/pd-extended
Once it is setup, follow these simple instructions.

Open patch
Hit DSP 1 for audio on
Hit Random Panning
Hit the preset settings
Hit the Effect On toggle and listen for feedback
Adjust levels as needed

Once you are ready to start audio file, hit footswitch or hit the z key on your keyboard and wait a couple of seconds till you hear
sound.

INPUT: 1 condenser microphone into audio interface

OUTPUT: 2 (!) inch TRS cables to main mixer or to DI Box

Performer will play a set of suspended chimes, use a stopwatch to keep for tenor saxophone and electronics
track of time, and use a foot switch to trigger the prerecorded sound file. 2012
