Materials : Manila paper, Visual aids, marker, candies and activity sheets.
III. Learning Procedure
a. Routinary Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom management
 Checking of Attendance
b.Review
Recall about the exponential notation.
c. Motivation
1. Ask two volunteer students to come in front.
2. Give the two students wrapped candies and respective tags.
I have 52 I have 44
A B
candies candies

Questions
1. How many candies do student A have? Student B?
2. What is the total number of candies?

d. Lesson proper

Activity
1. The class will be divided into 10 groups consisting 7 to 8 members.
2. They will be given an activity sheets per group for them to answer.
3. Each group will have 5-10 minutes to answer the following questions.
4. After the time given the paper will be collected.
5 The teacher will select randomly a student to show their answers on board.
6. Checking of Answer and giving points.
Activity Proper
Simplify the following numerical expression involving exponents and
grouping symbols.
5
1. (3)4 - 4 2. (6)3 3. 53 24 4. 42 +83

Analysis

1. How can we evaluate numerical expression with exponents?

2. What are the steps to simplify the numerical expressions involving exponents?

Abstraction
1. (−𝟑)𝟒 – 4
Step 1.
Evaluate if the expression have exponents and the mathematical operation involve.
 There were two terms involved (−3)4 and 4 separated by an operation of subtraction
1𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 → (−𝟑)4 – 4  2nd term

Step 2.
Evaluate first the numerical expression with exponents
 (−𝟑)(−𝟑)(−𝟑)(−𝟑)
Step 3.
Combine the two evaluated terms and get the power.
 (−𝟑)𝟒 – 4 = (−𝟑)(−𝟑)(−𝟑)(−𝟑) − (𝟒) = 67
𝟓
2. ( )𝟑
𝟔
Step 1.
Evaluate if the expression have exponents and the mathematical operation involve.
 The expression involves a division
Step 2.
Evaluate the numerator and the denominator.
5 5 5
 (6) (6)(6)
Step 3. Combine the evaluated numerator and denominator then get the power.
5 5 5 5 125
 (6)3 =(6) (6)(6)= 216
Answers.

1. (−3)4 – 4 = (−3)(−3)(−3)(−3) − (4) = 67

5 5 5 5 125
2. (6)3 =(6) (6)(6)= 216
3. 53 24 = (5) (5) (5)(2) (2) (2) (2) = (125)(16) =2000
4. 42 + 83 = (4)(4) + (8)(8)(8) = 16 + 512 = 528

Application
The sides of two cubes are 9cm and 8 cm respectively. By how much does the volume
of the first cube differ from from that of the second cube?

9cm 8cm

Answer.
First Cube s = 9cm Second Cube s= 8cm
3
V= 𝑠 V = 𝑠3
= 93 = 83
3
= 729 𝑐𝑚 = 512 𝑐𝑚3
Since, 729-512 = 217, then the volume of the first cube is 𝟐𝟏𝟕 𝒄𝒎𝟑 bigger than the
second cube.

IV. Evaluation

¼ sheet of paper.
Evaluate.
2 4 1
1. (− 3)2 (− 5)3 2. −5(−3)2 (2)4 3. (− 3)𝑟 8

V. Assignment
Study the Basic concepts of Algebra, exponential notation and evaluating numerical
expression with exponents.
