SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

INTRODUCTION:

 We tend to acquire more than one language the so-called Second Language Acquisition
(SLA) aside from our mother tongue language
 We are Inter Cultural nation
 We are Globally competitive humans
 We often acquire through formal studies language as being a basic subject, immersion
learning from other people (informal)
 Effective if combined, if not the acquisition of second language is lacking with regards to
its efficiency and proper usage in communicating.
 However, the studies of language are comprehensive and authoritative and excellent in
their way
 Essentially academic one of providing a detailed initiation into the discipline of linguistics
 It is lengthy and technical
 Introduced to detail without it being made clear what it is a detail of
 We should discover new techniques in studying language more importantly in the
acquisition of Second Language through developments which will ease all kinds of people
(including the laymans) in understanding complex ideas (INTRO TO SLA)
 There is a need for a more general or gradual introduction to language to support the
more academically oriented introductions to linguistics and to prepare the conceptual
ground; to provide large scale view of different areas of language study both to the
students undertaking linguistics and to people who take an interest in language without
being academically engage in linguistics perse (eg. practical purposes, own lines of
inquiry, awareness of something which figures centrally in their everyday lives.
 Also through practicals like immersing the learners through communicating with others
in a particular place

BACKGROUND (CASE STUDY)


 Conducted through an interview with an adult learner acquiring Ybanag as her second
acquisition (add more to her profile, specify age , status , home address, work address)
 The interview was made through an English medium which shall be considered as well as
second language of the interviewee since the English subject is under the curriculum of
General Education here in the Philippines
 The researchers recorded the interview, there is an assigned interviewee to read the
listed questions for the purpose of this study
 The said recording was converted into text-based including its (language styles and
barriers)
 Observations were made- pronunciation, the use of slang words “kinda” ; adlibs such as
umm… long pauses, lacks proper usage of grammar (elaborate and relate to SLA)
 Alternatives available to the decision maker
