To meet the requirements of true closure, each activity must also include the teacher checking student
output BEFORE releasing students to independent practice.
Activity Description
1. Three W’s Students discuss or write
· What did we learn today?
· So What ?(relevancy, importance, usefulness)
· Now What? (how does this fit into what we are
learning? Does it affect our thinking? Can we predict where we are
going? Follow up? How does this relate to our unit outcomes?
2. Fishbowl Every student anonymously writes down a question that he or she
has about the lesson. Collect and mix up in a bowl. Draw questions
and have students answer.
3. Sentence starters I learned...
permanently displayed I'm beginning to wonder...
on a poster I have a question about...
I'm beginning to understand...
I want to know…
I feel…
I think…
Today, I understood…
I was surprised that…
I would still like to know more about…
I am still confused about…
This lesson was valuable because…
4. Think-pair-share-- Pose an application or other higher- level wrap-up question. Allow
time to think individually. Turn to a neighbor & share.
Two Variations-
Pair / Share
Tell the person next to you two (three, four or five) things you have
learned today. Groups will then report out.
Have students Think/Write/Pair/Share
5. Ticket Out Students will write one important word from the day's lesson on an
index card or strip of paper and hand it in as a "ticket out". The next
day, you could use the cards as a quick review.
6. Partner Activity Have students stand up with a partner and explain to the partner
what they learned. Give them one minute. Then give the partner 30
seconds to add what he/she learned. The one caveat is that the
partner with 30 seconds cannot repeat anything that the first
partner said. Finally, if there is time, ask them to report back to the
class what the one thing is that they learned. You might make a list
on the board and leave it there as a starting point for the next day.
