Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

According to the DepEd Journal (2012), only the Philippines, Angola, and Djibouti

have a ten-year basic education cycle. The two-year shortcomings had been proven

problematic in the accreditation of Philippine graduates when applying for postgraduate

courses and employment overseas.

Given these supporting facts, there is indeed a need to improve the quality of basic

education by enhancing and by expanding the basic education cycle.

The Philippines is the only remaining country in Asia with a ten-year basic

education cycle but it leaves its reputation and enters the so called K to 12 system. The K

to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary

education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS] to

provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and

prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and

entrepreneurship.

Senior High School covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes

Grades 11 and 12 in Senior High School, students will go through a core curriculum and

subjects under a track of their choice.

Apart from the core curriculum which has eight learning areas namely: (1)

Language, (2) Humanities, (3) Communication, (4)Mathematics, (5) Philosophy, (6)

Science, (7) Social Science, and (8) Physical Education and Health, the new senior high

school system comes with specific career tracks that seem like college courses. They

include certain disciplines (1) Academic, (2) Arts and Design, (3) Sports, and (4)

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL)

Each senior high school student must choose one track to master and base his/her

choice on how he/she wants to advance after completing high school or Grade 12. Career

assessment and aptitude tests and an occupational interest inventory, on the contrary, will

show the student’s strengths and interests. Career advocacy programs will also help and

guide them in choosing the right track for their selves.

The full implementation of senior high school in the country will take its place in

this coming school year. The first batch of Filipino students to go through senior high

school will troop to schools in 2016. Many of the students and parents are still unaware of

the few details as regards to the new senior high school system.

Objectives of the Study

The study was conducted:

1. To determine the level of awareness of parents of the selected Grade 10 students on

private and public high schools in Talavera about the courses to be taken in senior

high.

2. To determine if the Grade 10 students from selected and public and private high

schools in Talavera are aware of the courses to be taken in senior high school.

3. To provide the parents of Grade 10 students a basis about the courses offered in

senior high school.

Conceptual Framework

The figure shows how the data were gathered. Using survey questionnaires, the

researchers assessed the parents of selected Grade 10 students about the level of their

awareness about the courses to be taken in senior high school.

Statement of the Problem

From this background, the researchers are thus, motivated to undertake the Level

of Awareness of the Parents of selected Grade 10 students on the private and public high

schools in Talavera about the courses to be taken in senior high school. The important data

gathered greatly helped in determining the level of awareness of the parents about the

courses offered in the senior high school. Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following questions:

1. How may the demographic profile of the parents of the selected Grade 10

students be described in terms of:

1.1 age;

1.2 gender;

1.3 civil status;

1.4 highest educational attainment; and

1.5 occupation

2. What is the level of the awareness of the parents of Grade 10 students from

selected private and public high schools in Talavera about the courses offered

in senior high school?

Assumptions

With high regards to the statement of the problem, the researchers came up with

the following assumptions:

1. Parents of Grade 10 students have enough information about the courses offered

in senior high school

2. Teachers do some practices to inform the parents about the courses offered in

senior high school.

3. Grade 10 students inform their parents about the courses offered in senior high

school.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study was to know the level of awareness of the parents of Grade

10 students from the selected public and private high schools in Talavera.

The respondents of the study were all the parents of selected Grade 10 students

from the selected private and public high schools in Talavera including 10 parents from

Talavera National High School (Pag-asa District), 5 parents from San Ricardo National

High School (San Ricardo), 5 parents from Sibul National High School (Sibul), 5 parents

from Tabacao National High School (Tabacao), 5 parents from Bulac National High School

(Bulac) 10 parents from REH Montessori College (Maestrang Kikay), and 10 parents from

Schola Cristi Inc. (Maestrang Kikay) during the school year 2015-2016.

The study was limited only to 50 parents of selected Grade 10 students from

different public and private high schools in Talavera.

Significance of the Study

The study entitled “The Level of Awareness of Parents of Selected Grade 10

Students from Different High Schools in Talavera about the Courses Offered in Senior

High School” covered all the parents of selected Grade 10 students from different high

schools in Talavera.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature and studies related to this study.

The K-12 implementation is starting to become widespread, not only because of the

numerous advantages that it has towards the overall education system, but it has also been

proven to be useful in preparing the children prior to college, if not, fit to work. Statistics

has shown that students who went through the K-12 learning system land more jobs as

compared to those countries who were using a different education system.

Senior High School consists of two distinct parts: first a core curriculum that

prepares the students for college, and second, a set of subjects (called “career pathways”)

that prepare students for careers. All students are focused to take the core curriculum, as

well as to choose at least one of career pathways.

Students in Grade 11 will spend about two-thirds of their time studying the core

subjects. One-third of their time will be spent on their chosen career pathways, either on

campus or more likely on internship or immersion in a company. Students in Grade 12 will

spend more than a third of their time in an internship or immersion.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter covers the methods and procedures of this study.

Methods of Research

The researchers used the descriptive method in analyzing and interpreting the data.

Descriptive method is used to this study to determine the level of awareness of the parents

of selected grade 10 students on public and private schools in Talavera.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were parents of 50 Grade 10 students from all public

and private high schools in Talavera District, 10 parents from Talavera National High

School, 5 parents from San Ricardo National High School, 5 Grade 10 parents from Sibul

National High School, 5 parents from Tabacao National High School, 5 parents from Bulac

National High School, 10 parents from REH Montesorri College and 10 parents from

Schola Cristi Inc.

Sampling Method

Stratified Random Sampling was used in the selection of respondents, based on the

computed sample sizes.

The Slovin’s formula was used in computing the sample:

𝑁
Formula: n=1+𝑁𝑒 2

Where : N = Size of the Population

n = Sample Size

e = Margin of Error

Research Instrument

The researchers used and developed a survey questionnaire as the main instrument

to gather and collect data for this study. The survey questionnaire also contains checklist.

The questionnaire was evaluated by the advisers to ensure that the content of it can obtain

the needed data for the study.

The questionnaire was divided into two parts. The first part covered the

demographic profile of the respondents: age, gender, civil status, highest educational

attainment and occupation. The second part pertained to the level of awareness of the

parents of Grade 10 students from selected private and public high schools in Talavera

about the courses offered in senior high school. It has 10 items specific in senior high

school track answered in five scales where 1 means never, 2 means seldom, 3 means

sometimes, 4 means often and 5 means always.
