By: PMAJ MICHELLE T DEIPARINE

Your Regional Health Service aims to deliver Health Services to the

personnel of this Police Regional Office. As an affiliate of the Department of
Health we are working hand in hand in pursuing endeavors in the
promotion of health and prevention of illnesses.

RHS ARMM is active and sincere in promoting healthy lifestyle in this

PRO , as you can see daily we monitor your Blood pressure, we regularly
conduct on site visits, give vitamins to our personnel esp during red alert
like election time ,give health teachings and information dissemination
initiatives like, distribution of flyers.. and further conduct Annual Physical
Examinations (APE) and pre medical evaluation before PFT .

As the PNP HEALTH SERVICE will be celebrating our 26 th YEAR come

August we will soon be launching the healthy lifestyle movement : PRO
ARMM - PRO HEALTH which encourages every personnel to commit to
a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, proper nutrition, and the
prevention or cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption.

This healthy lifestyle program will be launched to help prevent and control
noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in this PRO.

In our country a significant proportion of Filipino adults are exposed to Non

Communicable Disease risks which include tobacco and alcohol use,
unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. In 2008, 57% of the total mortality
rate in the Philippines is due to NCDs such as cardiovascular disease,
cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease. And in this PRO,
Cardiovascular diseases and Hypertension is quite alarming as observed
during our APE and PFT. Hence, this Healthy Lifestyle movement: PRO
ARMM - PRO HEALTH is the RHS ARMM’s campaign for healthy living
and prevention of lifestyle diseases.

Through the movement, RHS ARMM and YOU will be working together to
promote and establish a sustainable environment for healthy living.

Let us now evaluate ourselves with these 4 GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Are you /we eating the proper food?

2. What are the physical activities that you / we do?
3. How many hours of sleep do you/ we get?
4. How much alcohol or cigarettes do you / we consume in one day?

These 4 guide questions aims to control the prevalence of non

communicable diseases – the LIFESTYLE DISEASES.

The Department of Health (DOH), citing experts from the United Nations
(UN), claimed that out of every three Filipinos, one dies before the age of
70 from a non-communicable disease (NCD).

While this is highly preventable, these diseases continue to rise in the

Philippines due to lack of regular exercise, improper diet, and excessive
drinking and smoking.

The RHS ARMM came up with 4 Basic Points for a Healthy Living based
on the DOH GO 4HEALTH program;

1. PRO TT – or Tigil Tabacco

Ten Filipinos die every hour because of illnesses related to cigarette

smoking, more and more Filipinos aged 15 years and older are tobacco
smokers, based on data from the 2009 Global Audit Tobacco Survey.

"GATS data show that a number of smokers accessed tobacco when they
were too young to make informed choices. By the time they are old
enough, they may find it very hard to quit and some may already suffer its
consequences.

Smoking is directly linked to lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial

disorders, according to DOH.
2. PRO Sustanya

Consumption of salt, sugar, fats, and high-calorie food has to be reduced

to prevent hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, as well as obesity. A
DOH statement on proper nutrition added that increased intake of fiber,
such as fruits and whole grains, is needed to lower cholesterol and blood
sugar levels.

the FNRI – Food and Nutrition Research Institute is strictly implementing

and regulating food labeling. Are you aware of the nutritional information
the label provides you? If not, it is about time you learn about the
nutritional qualities of all the products you buy and plan a healthy diet.

3. PRO Lihuk

The human body is designed for movement and for strenuous physical
activity. But survey revealed that only 7 out of 100 Filipino adults exercise
at least three to four times a week, the DOH said,

Instead, today’s way of life leans heavily on doing all tasks as quickly and
physically economical as possible. Lahat na lang gusto natin mabilis at
hindi tayo maglalakad at mapapagod. So goes the Online transactions, use
of Elevators, escalators, automatic transmission at iba pa .And with this, ,
from all age groups demonstrated a trend toward increasing overweight
and obesity. This is partly due to the tendency towards a sedentary lifestyle.
And obviously will develop Lifestyle diseases such as Hypertension,
Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes

Thus, RHS ARMM takes off with this PRO LIHUK para dili matiguk and
prescribes physical activities ascertained to individual’s health status.
4. PRO hinay hinay sa Tagay

According to DOH, the effect of alcohol varies in every person, and while it
may offer health benefits to some, it may actually impose a major health
risk to others, lalo na hindi din natin mapigilan ang masasarap na pulutan.

Excessive alcohol consumption may not only pose health risk to our liver
and kidneys but can also lead to drunk-driving accidents, which is one of
the reasons cited by President Benigno Aquino III when he signed into law
the "Anti-Drunk and "Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013"

Therefore… let us put on a thinking cap, stop and evaluate our lifestyle.
We are hoping that we will be working together towards this movement,
and be inspired and make a personal commitment to embrace better daily
habits….

"Healthy lifestyle is a choice . If you love your family, and value your
workspace and community, Let us help one another and support this
movement."
