Digital Citizenship
1. Digital citizenship is a concept that is becoming utilized more around the world. It is a concept in which
users of a digital world not only know how to properly utilize a digital medium, but using it in an
appropriate way to where all users are able to access in a safe and empowered way whether it is an
online classroom, social media, or any other digital medium.
2. In your own words, provide an overview of the 9 elements of digital
citizenship
1. Digital access - Access to technology and online resources for all students not only at school but
at home with options for the community and at home to use.

2. Digital commerce - The ability to perform everyday activities such as banking, purchasing, selling,
and utilization of currency in a safe and effective digital method that can be used with any
device.
3. Digital communication - The exchange of information in a way that others can understand the
message and those that are struggling to find their own voice in the world be able to find their
own voice.
4. Digital literacy - Being able to discern between reputable sources and disreputable sources when
conducting research or using a digital medium in the appropriate fashion.
5. Digital etiquette - Being aware of others in the way that others think. I.e. the golden rule, treat
others how you would want to be treated. Not only in person but online as well.
6. Digital law - Understanding that the actions that you perform online can be punishable in the real
world as well. Thus safeguards have been placed on various sites to ensure that no illegal activity
is being done on their websites.
7. Digital rights & responsibilities - Understanding that even though everyone has access to internet
resources, that if something is seen that could be a potential issue that it should be brought up to
their instructor or other proper authority so that everyone accessing this resource can so in a
safe manner.
8. Digital health & wellness - Ensuring that users are not allocating their entire livelihood to the
digital world. Thus creating a balance between the amount of time that they spend in the digital
world and the real world.
9. Digital security - Safeguards to protect the user as well as the computer from potential hazards
that can either corrupt the computer to an unusable state or secretly steal personal information
that can be used for malicious reasons. Can be done through the use of spyware, firewalls, and
malware protection software.
3. Provide examples of how you can practice and/or teach three different digital
citizenship elements in your current or future work setting, through (1) focusing on
your individual use of technology and/or (2) teaching/training others to be responsible
with technology use.
1. For digital access on day one I show all of my students how to access the various programs
needed to be successful in the classroom with them sitting at a computer instead of just going
through it on the projector. Students that may not have access to a computer at home has the
option to purchase a tablet from the school bookstore so that they have access to a device to
access their schoolwork. Software is also available to students enrolled at the school so that if
they need to access a word processing or powerpoint software they can use it for free while
enrolled at the school.
2. Digital communication is practiced in my class in a number of ways that allows students to voice
their ideas to the class or voice concerns to me privately. Utilizing discussion boards I am able to
give the students an opportunity to voice what they would do given a certain situation that they
may come across working as an EMT and allow students to provide feedback in a constructive
way. Students may also message me either through blackboard or Remind 101 so that any
concerns they may have is brought to my attention without causing embarrassment to
themselves or publicly belittling someone in the class.
3. Digital etiquette is practiced as well in the class as mentioned in example two. Students respond
to fellow classmates through discussion boards and anything that would be demeaning to
another student has potential repercussions such as reduction of grade or removal from the
program. We also utilize social media within the class to promote the program and successes of
the students and anything that they may post could have potential consequences. Also explain
how what a student may post on their own social media site may have repercussions for their
personal career aspirations by using examples from EMS personnel in the past.
