MUIDS CAPSTONE PROJECT

UNMANNED AIRCRAFT OAK, BRINK, TIM

THE BEGINNING

INTRO
INTRO

THE IDEA

▸ We want to build something rather than doing an

internship into some profession we don’t want to pursue in
the future.

▸ Since, most of our member also interested in engineering

and aviation so we thought building an unmanned aircraft
would be fun and a decent introduction into the future.
STARTING…..

DESIGN
DESIGN

WHAT IS OUR DESIGN

▸ We decided to build a tailless aircraft or aka the flying

wing. This however will prove to be a mistake, in which we
will discuss later on

▸ The aircraft would be powered by single electric motor

and control by two servo that attached to two control
surfaces.
DESIGN

WHY THIS DESIGN?

▸ We used the tailless aircraft because it is a somewhat

unconventional so it brought certain uniqueness for the
project.

▸ Additionally the tailless aircraft only need two control

surfaces which are the ailerons.

▸ If we use the traditional layout we would need three to

four control surfaces, which are the two ailerons, rudder,
and elevator. Which will significantly increase the
complexity of the design.
DESIGN

WHY THIS DESIGN?

▸ Kind of like these real life example

PROCEDURES
PROCEDURES

FROM SCRATCH
▸ Figured out all the components and materials needed for the building
of this RC plane.

▸ Looked through different stores to find adequate store to acquire the

materials needed.

▸ Printed out the plan of the aircraft. The plan is a collection of pieces of
the aircraft that would form into the aircraft
PROCEDURES

FROM SCRATCH
▸ Precisely cut 2 sheets of large PVC foam into different parts of the RC
plane with the guidance from the plan. Make sure that all the pieces are
properly cut and scored.

▸ When all the structural components are ready, we have to assemble it

together and make sure that the assembly is sturdy enough for the
flight.

▸ Separately prepare the electrical components of the aircraft.

▸ Combine the airframe with the electronics.

FURTHER IDEA

▸ We had the idea to make the plane to be solar-powered,

thus prolong its ability to fly.

▸ This will increase its versatility and allow it to be able to

be used in more application such as surveillance or even
scout for search and rescue.

▸ However, since we start this project, we already used a lot

of money. So, for the lack of funding, we decided to not
add the solar panels.
ADDITIONS

FURTHER IDEA

▸ Even though we didn’t put the

solar panels. It is a possibility for
further improvement of this project
in the future.

MISTAKE
MISTAKE

DESIGN FLAW

▸ Lack of vertical stabilizer

▸ Problem with torque

▸ How to fix?

▸ Add vertical stabilizer

▸ Thrust vector
