Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Publish Your Writing!

Content Area: English Language Arts (ELA)
Grade Level(s): 5TH
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE5W3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: www.kidpub.com

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will first introduce KidPub to the class. The, the teacher will model
and show the students all around the online project site before beginning the lesson. The teacher will then
give the students timed to explore and navigate through the different tabs of the website. Once the students
are done, the teacher will ask the students to look under the “read stories” tab. The students will be asked to
read at least three stories that are posted on KidPub. The students will then be asked to share a few of the
stories that they read and what they liked about the story. There will be given a sheet for them to write down
descriptive details and clear events they noticed in the stories.
The teacher will then put different narrative topics into a bucket and have every student pick one. Based
on their topic, the students will have to write a narrative to develop real or imagined experiences using
descriptive details and clear sequence events. Once their narratives are written they will grab a partner and
revise their narratives. Additionally, the students will be asked to post their final narrative on “KidPub.com.”
The students will then get the opportunity to read their classmates narratives online and comment based on
their positive thoughts!

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computer, mobile device, iPad, or tablet with Wi-Fi access would be required to complete this learning
activity.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students are collaborating with their peers and others outside of the class during this
learning activity. First, the teacher is having the students read other people’s narratives that were
posted outside of the classroom. Then, the teacher is having the student revise, edit, and help their
partner finalize their narrative. Lastly, the students are required to read their peers narratives and
comment positive thoughts!

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The students are using the topic to create their own
original narrative based on a real or imagined thing that they think of. This can be anything school
appropriate. The students are also allowed to research and look at any other person’s stories alone.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will have the opportunity to write and create their web entry
narrative. The student’s will also have to provide their own feedback to their peers and comments
after their final submission is posted.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The
students are posting their narrative to KidPub website for their peers, teachers, friends, and family to
see it.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

• The students will be given the chance to use the audio feature to speak their narratives out. This will
help for students who have impairment with typing.
• The students will be able to use headphones to listen to their narratives.
• The students will be given multiple peer edit and help opportunities.
• The students will have a worksheet to write down things they noticed and editing tips for their
narratives.
• The students do not have to share their work in front of the classroom.
• The students are student-paced.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
In order for the teacher to implement internet safety, it Is essential that teacher types up a permission
form for all of the parents to receive. The parents will need to read and sign the form to agree or disagree
with their child’s work going onto KidPub.com. I will make sure every form is signed and returned before
allowing the students to post their narratives. The forms will be filed aware safely for future references. I will
monitor the student’s work and what they are posting online.
Reflective Practice:
In order to further this lesson, I would ask a children’s literature author to come by and talk to the students
about creating a narrative. I would ask the author to explain the steps it took for them to publish their writing
and explain to the student’s the correct steps in doing so. I would also allow the students to read their
narratives to the guest. This will give another perceptive to the students by speaking to a professional .
