ABSTRACT
Several sizeable earthquakes have caused severe damage in civil structures all over the world.
Vibrations in structures which are induced by natural disasters such as earthquake and
hurricanes may lead to greater dynamic responses of the structures. To protect civil structures
from significant damage, the response reduction of civil structures under such severe
earthquakes has become an important topic in structural engineering. The study of structural
dynamics in civil engineering curriculum is commonly perceived to be a difficult exercise
because of the mathematical nature of the subject. Thus, one of the most effective ways to
simplify this would be development of a suite of simple experimental setups which would
Upon completion of the model, static stiffness tests and free vibration tests is performed to
determine the actual properties of the model such as stiffness, damping ratio and natural
frequencies of vibration. The model is thought of as a model for a building frame with three
floors which suffers earthquake like base motions. The frequency of the base motion is
varying by changing the RPM of the electric motor. The shake table is use to record data
from an accelerometer mounted on the model. Dewesoft x software is used to compute the
data for shake table.
