generalization/concept/  Is it different from the way we performed these
conclusion/abstraction operations on the whole numbers?
should the learners
arrive at? Analysis  Somewhat different, yes, but not more difficult if we
remember that positive and negative integers are
opposites.
 The problem above can be solved using addition of
integers. Owing Php 5 can be represented by -5
and owing Php 3 can be represented by -3. The
problem becomes:
(−5) + (−3) = −8

Abstraction  ADDITION OF INTEGERS

A. If the integers have the same sign, just add the
positive equivalents of the integers and attach
the common sign to the result.
1. 27 + 30 = +(|27| + |30|)
= +(|57|)
= 57

2. (−20) + (−15) = −(|20| + |15|)
= −(35)
= −35
B. If the integers have different signs, get the
difference of the positive equivalents of the
integers and attach the sign of the larger
number to the result neglecting the negative
sign.
1. 38 + (−20)
Get the difference between 38 and 20:
38 − 20 = 18
Since 38 is greater than 20, the sum will
have a positive sign. Hence; 38 + (−20) =
18.
2. (−42) + 16
Get the difference between -42 and 16:
42 − 16 = 26
Since 42 is greater than 16, the sum will
have a negative sign. Hence; (−42) + 16 =
−26.
3. If there are more than two addends in the
problem the first step to do is to combine
addends with same signs and then get the
difference of their sums.
a. (−14) + 28 + (−21)
= (−14) + (−21) + 28
= (−35) + 28
= −7
 Subtraction of Integers
Earlier, you learned how to add integers.
For example, in adding 8 + (−5) = 3. In addition
5 + 3 = 8. In subtraction 8 − 5 = 3, which is the
same as 8 + (−5) = 3. So 8 − 5 = 8 + (−5). This
means that subtracting 5 from 8 is the same as
adding the opposite of 5 to 8.
As a rule, to subtract a number from a given
number, replace the number you are subtracting
by its opposite and then use the rule of in addition
of numbers

Example 1:
8 − 5 = 8 + (−5)
8 + (−5) = 3

Example 2:
−3 − 2 = −3 + (−2) = −5

Example 3:
−3 − (−4) = −3 + 4 = 1

 The teacher will give more examples and deep

explanation as well as application during
discussion.
