Bedbug summit slated for January

Bedbug Invasion Spreads Fear, Loathing

In an effort to address the epidemic of
bedbugs creeping through the nation, federal
and local agencies are attacking the menace with
effective measures.
Bedbugs, biting insects that thrive on the
consumption of human and animal blood, have
been around for thousands of years. Drawings of

States with the use of controversial insecticides
like DDT, which have since been outlawed
because of their toxic and deadly effects on
humans.
Without national standards regarding
the extermination of bedbugs and increased
international travel in and out the country,
bedbugs are being easily spread by human
activities.
“Maybe health authorities should be
checking for signs of bedbugs in the luggage of
people coming into the U.S. from international
travel from airlines and cruise ships,” said
Toleka Parham, 21, an international business
major at American University. “When I travel,
my focus is not catching malaria and other
diseases. Now I have to think about bedbugs.”
Bedbugs are often found hiding in seams,
folds or under buttons on such items as
mattresses, box springs, upholstered furniture
and cushions. However, bedbug inspections have
revealed eggs, nymphs, casing and adult bedbugs
in electrical outlets, voids in walls, electronic

maintained the politically
astute mayor, who was
overwhelmingly elected in
2006 by the city’s Black
residents, always had their
concerns at heart.
“To me, for all that he
has done for residents and
the way he was demonized
during the campaign, he still
showed a lot of class,” Moten
said of Fenty. He added that
while the mayor has received
plenty of work offers, he will
remain focused on enhancing
education reforms established
by former schools chancellor

Fifteen fewer guns are on the streets of Washington,
D.C., thanks to Got Guns?, a Metropolitan Police
Department program that offers cash rewards to anonymous
callers who give police tips on where they can find illegal
firearms.
According to the program’s records, obtained by the
AFRO through a Freedom of Information Act request, in its
first two months the initiative has led MPD to confiscate 14
illegal firearms from Aug. 23 through Oct. 9. A 15th firearm
was also seized through the program recently, a police
official said. The seized weapons include eight handguns,
three assault rifles and three shotguns. Public safety experts
and community activists say the program deserves credit for
potentially saving
lives.

reviewed the list of confiscated guns for the AFRO.

weapons makes for a safer neighborhood.”
Ronald Moten, cofounder of the anti-violence
organization Peaceaholics, voiced similar thoughts. “I think
anytime that you get guns that work out of the hands of
people it’s a potential life saved,” Moten said. He added,
however, that he would also like to see an increased focus
on the mentality and socioeconomic issues that lead to gun
violence in the first place.

While membership is open to all African-American lawmakers,
its members have been overwhelmingly Democrats, with only
Republicans Melvin Evans of the Virgin Islands and Gary
Franks of Connecticut ever becoming CBC members. Though
invited, J.C. Watts, a Black Republican who represented
Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003, declined membership. Sen.
Edward Brooke, a Massachusetts Republican who served in the
Senate from 1967 through 1979, was not publicly invited and
refused to join a CBC boycott of President Richard Nixon’s
State of the Union address in 1971 although he criticized the
Nixon administration’s approach to the Black community and
civil rights.
“The name of the group is not the Congressional Black
Democratic Caucus, it’s the Black Caucus. [And] if they go
back to their founding principles, then these two men should
be welcomed with open arms,” said Black Republican political
strategist Raynard Jackson. But, he predicted, even though
West and Scott have been invited, “this group will make a
hostile environment for another Black [Republican] based on
them not being compatible in their philosophical leaning.”
Echoing statements by Chairwoman Lee in an Oct. 22
article in The Economist, Maryland Congresswoman Donna
Edwards told the AFRO, “If they’re aligned with the interests of
working people, particularly African-Americans, who struggle
and they want to work with us to advance those interests,” they
would be a good addition to the caucus. But, she added, “what I
know of them and their agendas, it is difficult for me to see how
that would work [though] it might make for some interesting
discussions.”
Backed by the national tea party and elected to office
by mostly White voters, Scott and West have decidedly
conservative agendas, including limited government, lowered
taxes and cuts in government spending. Jackson said that, even
among GOP ranks, the men are considered to be far, far right
of center, making them almost incompatible with the mostly
liberal members of the CBC.
“These boys are crazy; they’re tea party people,” Jackson
told the AFRO. “I’ve had White people calling me up saying
these guys are extremely conservative and so far out of the
mainstream. Can you see them talking with Maxine Waters? I’d
like to be a fly on the wall.”
But, he added, “If I were them, I’d join just to push the
issue.”
West, in a Politico interview, indicated his interest in joining
the CBC. “That has been a monolithic voice in the body politic
for far too long. There is a growing conservative Black voice in
this country,” that needs to be heard, West told the publication.
Scott, on the other hand, told Politico he is less willing
to join, pointing to his experience in the South Carolina
Legislative Black Caucus and the dissonance between him and
Black Democrats.
Though White Republicans are excited by these two
additions to the House, saying their victories signal a potential
increase in the number of Black conservatives, the new
additions will not incite more Blacks to join the party “if
they’re saying the same thing White conservatives are saying,”
Jackson said. “It’s not the messenger; it’s the message. You
can’t send a Black to say the same things Pat Buchanan says.”
“In a lot of ways,” Jackson added, “it would be better not to
have these guys in these positions because it gives the White
folks in the party a way out” of having to create real change,
“especially if they [Scott and West] have no real power.”

Our Sense of Priorities
The Senate’s Republican
leader, Mitch McConnell,
was quoted by the National
Journal recently as declaring:
“The single most important
thing [that the Republicans]
want to achieve is for
President Obama to be a one-
term president.”
This, to me, is a
misguided priority. As
the elected public servants
of the American people,
our challenge and our
duty to our country are
far more compelling than
Elijah Cummings the temporary gains of any
person or political party.
In the General Election
this month, Marylanders stood tall in our support for President
Obama, his Democratic vision for this country, and the
president’s allies here in the Free State. Viewed in the context
of Republican gains in many other states, the scope of these
Maryland victories was both breathtaking and humbling.
Maryland’s Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley won a
236,000 vote landslide. Our senior Democratic Sen. Barbara
Mikulski trounced the Republican candidate by 438,000 votes.
All but one of Maryland’s House Democrats received
renewed mandates to work for constructive, progressive
policies that will help our people with the challenges that
are central to our daily lives – and I was honored by a nearly
100,000 vote victory in Maryland’s Seventh Congressional
District.
As I reflect on these election results, I am reminded, in very
human terms, that we here in Maryland are all workers in an
historic movement – not just participants in a series of political
campaigns.
The 143,000 neighbors who voted for me are young and
not-so-young. Our ethnicity is White, yellow and brown – as
well as Black.
We live in Maryland’s poorest neighborhoods and our most

Welcome to the 2012 slugfest. And with more than twice
as many Democrats than Republicans up for re-election in
two years, emboldened Republicans have their sights set on
controlling the House, the Senate and the White House.
In order to stay in the White House, President Obama should
adopt my 12-step recovery program:
1) Stop making concessions before entering into
negotiations with GOP leaders – The  recently announced
“Slurpee Summit” has not been held at the White House and
President Obama is already saying he’s willing to extend the
Bush tax cuts to the top 2 percent of Americans, the group least
likely to place those dollars back into an ailing economy. The
time to make concessions is during the actual horse-trading, not
in advance…   too late.  Given the president’s lateness, perhaps this will end

groping for words when trying to explain why the White House

3) Ignore calls to move to the right – Whenever Democrats

The time: Late 2003
The place: A newsroom in

The event: A veteran
Republican senator dispatches a news release, announcing
the authorization of a new, jobs-making project in the state he
represents.
The upside: News like that will be to the politician’s benefit
because the voters like their man in Washington to deliver the
goods. And he gets to add this announcement to the bragging
rights file for his next re-election bid.
The downside: The senator knows the measure has zero
chance of surviving the essential appropriations process,
meaning the news release is pumping people up for something
that will never come to fruition.
The rebound:  When a reporter points out this little
technicality, both the senator and many of his constituents
protest that she is practicing “gotcha” journalism, which
implies something underhanded and ulterior, when, really,
only those who have actually done something wrong or
embarrassing can get got.
The bottom line: Never mind the facts, the truth, the reality.
Just keep those illusions coming and ladle on another helping
of deception for the folks back home. It’s the perception that
counts.
It’s that kind of thinking – or lack of thinking – that has us

affluent, in million dollar homes and rented rooms, senior
centers and college dormitories.
Those who took the time to talk with me in the last few
months expressed their highest aspirations and deepest fears.
They want America to succeed – and to be part of that success
– as do I.
Reflecting on these votes of trust, I could never willingly
compromise our future for someone else’s ideology or greed,
whether this pledge leads to future electoral victories or
defeat. This, I believe, is how the relationship between the
people and their public servants should be fashioned in a
democratic republic.
President Obama shares these same feelings of loyalty,
determination and urgency. At the same time, however, we
both understand that we must work with Republican leaders
when we can.
The challenges that our nation must confront and overcome
are too monumental to do otherwise.
We must work together to help more Americans get
back to work. We also must do all that we can to encourage
the American businesses that are creating the next wave of
sustainable energy solutions that will free us from foreign oil.
We must assure that our public schools and universities
serve every single American, making certain that all of us have
the skills and knowledge to compete in an increasingly complex
world.
We must move forward toward universal access to
affordable healthcare – and continue to support the medical
research that will defeat the deadly threats that now plague our
communities.
We must care for those who have cared for us in our youth –
and on our nation’s battlefields.
We must not waiver in our commitment to home ownership,
continuing to fight foreclosures and predatory lending with all
of our strength.
We must find the political will to protect our natural heritage
and our precious Chesapeake Bay.
We must reform our immigration policies to better protect
our borders, while still embracing the American “melting pot”
that is a source of much that is great about our country.
We must defeat those who would resort to terror for their
lose an election, there are inevitable suggestions that the party
should move to the right. The last thing this country needs is
two Republican parties. The underreported story of this election
is that conservative Democrats, so-called Blue Dog Democrats,
suffered the bulk of the losses, especially in House districts
previously held by conservative Republicans.
4) Make conservatives put up or shut up – It’s one thing
to campaign. It’s quite another to govern.  Many Tea Party
candidates, including those cross-dressing as Republicans,
have pledged to balance the budget while exempting defense
funding and entitlements that make up 85 percent of the federal
budget.  Insist that they give specifics on how they can possibly
balance the budget by attacking only 15 percent of the budget.
5) Use Vice President Joe Biden as your attack dog –
Many presidents have used their vice presidents as their chief
defenders.  Richard Nixon had Spiro Agnew and George W.
Bush used Dick Cheney in that capacity.  Unchain Biden as
your “Defender-in-Chief” while you continue to be presidential,
which suits your non-confrontational personality.
6) Realize the public still trust Democrats over Republicans
on the big issues – A recent USA Today/Gallup poll showed
that Americans trust Democrats over Republicans on most of
the important issues facing America, including racial and ethnic
discrimination, unemployment, the size and power of large
corporations, health care, the environment and disengaging the
U.S. from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The GOP was favored
to deal with illegal immigration, the federal debt, terrorism
and the size and power of the federal government, even in the
recent elections.
7)  Strengthen the coalition between Black, Latinos and
Asians – That coalition was the key to Obama’s 2008 victory
when the majority of Whites voted for John McCain. Latinos
returned Democratic senators to power in Nevada and
California. Democrats can’t be successful in 2012 without
paying special attention to all people of color, who are

in the bind we now find ourselves in as of late last Tuesday,
when the results of the mid-term election affirmed what many
had feared: That the American people had lost their collective

Actually, they have replaced thinking with gulping, having
been spoon-fed pap from myriad sources, many of which are
about as legitimate as a $3 bill. Politics is no longer a full-
bodied meal of protein, starch and complex carbohydrates, but
a junk food diet chockfull of sugar, salt and saturated fat. And
the body politic is no longer healthy.
What makes this regrettable situation worse is that so many
people have no qualms about being in this condition. They
prefer believing to knowing, and often confuse the two. They
believe Barack Obama is a socialist; they believe he was not
born in the U.S.; they believe he is spending $200 million a day
for an official trip to India.  But many made it through, and militant ignorance was their

cannot be known because it is not true.
Don’t bother, however, trying to tell them or even to show
them otherwise.  You will only be called a spinner, an apologist
and your evidence – Obama’s clearly pro-capitalist record, his
official birth certificate, and official statements about the India
trip – all of that will be deemed as counterfeit.
This is what German writer Johann Goethe called “militant
ignorance.” That’s when you’re bound and determined,
committed and pledged to avoid and resist any attempt to

own ends, while continuing to embrace the rest of humanity.
In all of these objectives, we Democrats must work with the
Republicans, as difficult as these cooperative efforts may be –
so I will respectfully respond to the Senate’s Republican leader
in this way.
Sen. McConnell, rather than wishing for our president’s
failure and defeat, you may want to consider a different priority,
one that could better serve our shared responsibility.
Unlike elections, our duty to improve the daily lives of those
we serve need not be – and should not be – a “zero sum game”
in which one American’s loss is another American’s gain.
It will be two more years until the American people next
vote on our sense of political priorities. Considering the serious
challenges that our nation must address now, shouldn’t we all
be rooting for our president’s success?
Senator, with all due respect, shouldn’t all Americans begin
rooting for the home team?

many Whites don’t want to view their president as “an angry

sound professorial.  
10)  Deploy first lady Michelle Obama to more events – In
many ways, Michelle Obama connects better with audiences
than the president.  Like her husband, she has two Ivy League
degrees.  Unlike the president, she comes across passionate
and unscripted.  It’s time to take her out of the garden and stop
limiting her to speaking before groups concerned about obesity
and military families.   
11)  Don’t be discouraged – Remember that Bill Clinton and
Ronald Reagan, whose approval ratings were almost identical
to yours at this point in office,  suffered mid-term shellacking
but bounced back to get easily re-elected to a second term. You,
too, can get your groove back.
12)  Remain engaged with the Black media – Part of the
problem this year was President Obama’s effort to arouse the
Black community came on “CP Time. ”  It was what former
Nixon aide, John Halderman called “TL-squared” – too little,
questions about whether he’s Black enough.

refusal to question, to self-examine, to learn. The militantly

to make just enough people believe they would be worthwhile

the certifiably ditzy and mediaphobic Sharron Angle of Nevada
and Colorado’s Ken Buck, a 21st century homo sapien whose
cultural sensibilities are about as evolved as Cro-Magnon man.

the left, then to the right, then toddling in the middle, then to
the left again and on and on – so will this unfortunate comfort
with not knowing.

Winning choirs representing 14 cities around the country
will come together for an unforgettable night of joy and praise
as they vie for the title of “The Best Church Choir in America”
at Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound grand finale. The event
will be held at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., on
Nov. 13.  The evening will be hosted by GRAMMY® Award-
winning artists CeCe Winans and Donald Lawrence along with
