1. 1 Introduction

T he hand held, waterpro of McMurdo R2 GMDSS

mode l for GMDSS convention vessel s conforms
to Pan European specification ETS300-225 for
the use of radios for Safety at Sea.

Please note that regulations vary from country

to country. McMurdo sets are approved specif-
ically by the countries in which they are sold.
Consequ ently, there may be differences in the
programming of sets bought in different coun-
tries. and therefore in their associ ated ma nuals.
If using outside the country of purcha se, it is
vital to check that the set conforms to local reg -
ulations prior to use.

McMurdo operate a policy of continual

development and reserve the right to alter
and improve the specification of th eir prod-
ucts w ithout notice.

Press 6 to turn the R2 on. To turn the radio off,
press and hold the key for approximately 2 sec-
onds. This is to avoid accidental power off.

Toggles between high and low transmit power
(see specification section 3.8). Use the low set·
ting over short ranges to preserve battery life.

Press to select Volume or Squelch mode then

These keys will change the selected channel.
Pressing VOl, saor :;", then ...;.... within 3 sec-
onds will adjust the volume, squelch or back-
lighting level respectively. The bargraph will
indicate the level selected.

2.2 Sel e c t i ng Alternative Channel KEEP VOL PRESSED

Sets
In cou ntries where it is pe rmitted , hold ing
VOl down while turning the radio on will
enable the radio to operate on a secondary
set of channels (Fig 2.3 ).
Where the display will normally show hINT'
(International cha nnel set) o n the botto m line,
this will show "USA " for USA channels, "CAN"
for Canadia n chan nels, etc.
• The availab ility of chan nel sets is dete rmined
by the country for which the radio has been pro-
grammed . The function will only be avai lable if
permitted in the country of purchase. Please
enquire with your national licensing authority
for details of permitted channel sets .
• The radio will reve rt to Inte rnational channels
if it is switched off , then on agai n.

2.3 Disable / Enable K e y Beep

The R2 bee ps every time a key is pressed to
confirm operat ion. To disa ble the key beep,
press and hold sawhi le turni ng the set on.
Repeat this procedur e to turn the key beep on
again.

Scan, Tri-Watch, etc) wi ll still be indicated by a

2.4 Removing/ Attaching the
Battery
The re are two battery options :
• 84-211 850 mAh NiCad Battery
• 84-210 Lithium Battery (non-rechargeable)
To remove the battery. lift the two locking clips
holding the battery pack in place (Fig 2.4).
When attaching the battery pack. ensure the
two locating pegs on the top of the batt ery are
located into the slots in the radio and that the
two locking clips have both engaged.
The set is fully waterproof even with the battery
remo ved, but it is recommended that any rnois-
lur e on the top of the battery or in the battery
com partment is wiped clear befo re attaching to Fig 2.4 • Battery p ac k rem o val
prevent the water creating a conducti ve path
between the contacts and thus reducing battery
life.

2.5 Charger Options
The R2 is supplied as standard with a 12V
drop-in trickle charger that will accept the whole
radio, or the battery alone (Fig 2.5) . Th is charg-
er will run from a standard 12 V marine supply
(12.6-15.5 V), or from 11 01220/240 V mains
with an appropriate optional adaptor/power
supply. Charging with the trickle charger takes
approximately 12-16 hours. There is also a
rapid charger available which will charge the
battery within 1 1/2 hours.
Note that only the 850 mAh NiCad battery
pack can be recharged - do not attempt to
recharge the Lithium battery pack.

2.6 Charging of Batteries

To charge the NiCad battery pack. insert the
battery or radio into the charge r ensuring that
excess moisture is wiped clear from the con-
tacts on the back of the battery pack . The 84-
215 will trickle charge the battery to fu ll capac-
ity. The 84-216 will rapid charg e the battery
until it is fully charged and will then automati-
cally switch to maintenance charge.

2.7 Notes on Charging
• NiCad batteries are supplied uncharged and
need charging be fore use.
• Charge the battery up to full charge when not
in use; note, that it ma y lose some of its charge
after several months of storage.
• Do not charge at temperatures below O·C or
above 40·C .
• Turn off the radio if charg ing the battery while
fitted to the radio .
• Always try to fully discharge the battery before
recharg ing - repeated recharging of the battery
while it is partly d isch arged may create a 'mem-
ory effect ', preventing the battery reach ing full
charge.
• Dispose of used batteries carefully. The con-
tents of the batte ries could be harm ful to the
env ironment.
• Never expose batteries to a naked flame .
IMPORTANT: The Lithium battery pack is
not rechargeable, and under no circum-
stances should any attempt be made to
recharge t he se batteries. Replacement
Lithium cells can be obtained from your
local McMurdo Agent (Part No. 84-210 ).

2.8 Battery Level Indicator

Except whe n adjus ting the Volume or Squelch,
the bar graph on the disp lay shows the battery
charge level (Fig 2.7). This indicates the voltage
at the battery terminals. not necessa rily the Fig 1.6 - Ch arging Options
charge stored . Ten or nine bars indicate a fUlly
charged batte ry, three or four bar s mean the
battery is almos t drained .
• A more accurate indication of the battery state
can be obtained by transmitting briefly on high
power. Do not use Ch 16 for this purpose.
• When using a Lithium battery pack. the low
level battery indicato r may flash under transmit
conditions. This doe s not necessarily reflect the
charge level rem aining in the battery, as it is
due to the different volt age characteristics of a
Lithium battery pack under load .

1 Installation
The 84·215 is a 12v tr ickle charger fo r the R2 GMDSS
rec hargeab le 8S0m Ah NiCad Batte ry Pack (84-211)

The charger is a wall mou nted unit using the tw o self ta p-

2 Charging
The 84·215 w ill trickle charge the batt ery pack in 14· 16
hours (O.K nom inal) and then switch to a holding charge
(O.Ol C) to keep the batte ry pack t opped up. Supply can
eithe r be d irectly from a 12v DC (11-16.5v) source usin g the
lead supp lied (Fig 1), or from a mains A( source (11Qv /
220v) using th e o ptio nal mains adapt or (Fig 2)-

Charging from a mains source must be via a mains adapto r

- do not co nnect the 84-215 d irectl y to the mains.

The batt ery can be charged separately,or fitte d to the radi o

as shown. Insert the batt ery wit h the charging co ntact s MainsAd apl or
po inting backwards into the charging pocket and push firm-
ly dow n unt il the contacts engage into the charger. Toensure
the battery is fu lly charged, turn the radio off.

Switc hing the 84-215 o n with th e batt ery already inserted w ill set
the charger to Holdi ng Charge Mode. To full charge a di scharged
batt ery, switch the 84-215 o n, then insert the batt ery.

The LED o n the front of the charger indicates the st atus of

the batt ery pack -

Steady Red : Charger on, no batte ry

Flashing Green : Charging
Steady Green : Charged / Holding charge

3 Notes
• The 84-215 is not waterproof and must be installed away
from exposure to excessmoisture
• Fo r new batt ery packs 3 charge I discharge cycles are needed to reach full capacity
• To avoid the mem ory affect com mon to NiCad cells, it is reco mmend ed that the batt ery pack
be fu lly discharged regularly
If the LED does not change state when the batte ry pack is inserted, check that the contacts
of the batte ry and the charger are clean
Do not att empt to recharge the 84-210 Lithium battery pack - this is not rechargeable.
3.2 Antenna
The antenna for the radio is ftted to the unit via a robust sc rew fitting to an M6 threaded soc ket
on the top of the raclo. This sys tem is more rugged than a traditional BNC connector, so the
radio 's orop-oroor integrity is not compromised by the anten na fixing .
W hile the radio is croo-proot and very rob ust, damage to the antenna such as bending or kinking
may adversely arect the transmission efficiency of the unit. which may lead to overloading of the
power module. Damaged antennae should be replaced immediately.
Rep lacement ant ennae can be p.irchased from authorised McMurdo Service Agents. Please refer
to section 3.7 for more detai ls on spare parts and accessories available.

3.3 Transmiss ion Ranges

Because VHF sig,als travel in a straight line and are not reflected back off the ionos phere as lowe r
freq uency sig nals are, the range of VHF signals is limite d to 'line of sight' , beyond which the ot her
vessel passes behind the curve 0: the Earth. Therefore, the range will increase greatly the higher
above sea level t,e antenna is, as Fig 3.1 illustrates (assumi ng maximum transmission power is
used) :

Th e refore, the typical range of a hand held radio such as this one used at sea level will be ap prox-
imately 8 km (5 !tiles). Th is will increase as height above sea level increases, or if the other rad io
user's antenna is at a greater height. Note , that the range between the yacht with the antenna
mounted on a 9 m (30 tt) mast and lhe handheld use r increases to 13-16 km (8-10 miles).

3.5 Batte~y Life Guidelines
• New batteries should be fully (trickle) charged
and fully discharged several times to achieve
full capacity.
To a large extent the battery life will depend on
the usage, or Duty Cycle of the radio - .e. fhe
battery will be drained much quicker if th3 radio
is transmitting continually than if it isjustreceiv-
ing. Additionally, if the radio is set to High Power
(5 Watts'), the power drain will be considerably
greater than if transmitting on Low Power (1
Watt').

3.9 Service & Warranty
Your radio should seldom need servicing, although it will benefit from an application of silicone or
Tefton grease to the battery contacts and antenna socket each season.
This unit is guaranteed for 2 years from date of retail sale. If it is necessary to have the unit
repaired, return it carriage prepaid 10 the agent in the country of purchase with a copy of the
receipted invoice showing the date of purchase. Where possible, return all the components unless
you are certain that you have located the source of the fault. If the original packing is not available,
ensure that it is well cushioned in packinq: the rigours of freight handling can be very different from
those encountered in the marine Environment for which the unit is designed.

IMPORTANT - The R2 is a sealed, waterproof unit. To create and maintain its waterproof
integrity it was assembled in a controlled environment using special equipment. The radio
is not a user maintainable unit, and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the unit be
opened, except by authorised McMurdo Service Agents. Unauthorised opening of the unit
will invalidate the warranty.
