overview of what to
expect this year
YEAR AT A GLANCE
We strive to help support your child by
providing countless opportunities for
collaboration and discussion. The following is
an overview of the way in which this will be
executed:
Meet and greet at the beginning of the
year with the classroom teacher to get to
know you and your child!
Student profile will be conducted to
solidify understanding of your child and
provide information to whomever will be
working with them. This profile includes
your child's strengths and interests, ways in
which they learn best, as well as identifies
goals and supports for the year.
First IEP meeting will be conducted in the
fall, to  either create or revise your child’s
IEP. The team consists of admin, teachers,
support staff, IST (Integration Support
Teacher) and LST (Learning Support
Teacher). Parents will also be given the
opportunity to be consulted in the planning
process and should receive a copy of the
IEP.
The IEP is broken down into three sections:
Goals, Objectives and Strategies. It serves as
a tool for collaborative planning, in the
assessment and achievement of the learner.
The IEP is then revised twice throughout the
school year, usually around spring break and
the end of the year, to check for progress.
The year end IEP meeting held in June,
will be an opportunity for both you and your
child to attend. This will be a 45 minute
meeting in which the team, consisting of
admin, classroom teacher, support staff, IST
and LST, will review your child's goals for the
year, provide an opportunity for your child
to articulate their learning, and plan for the
coming year.
STAYING CONNECTED
We acknowledge that this process is reliant on
a team effort, and strive to provide countless
opportunities to stay connected throughout
the school year. The following is a list of ways
that will provide clear and concise
communication about your child's learning
throughout the year.
CSL (communicating student learning):
This is much like a report card and will be
sent home 3 times during the year.
Student-led conferences: These are
scheduled twice throughout the year and
allow for the students to share their learning
and experiences with their families.
School website: This is updated by the
principal and our head secretary as a means
to relay important and upcoming
information to parents.
Classroom website: this is an effective way
to pass on important information to parents
and keep them up to date on what learning
is going on in the classroom. It also offer a
number of relevant resources for families.
E-mail: This is an effective means of
communication and way for you to remain
in contact with the classroom teacher.
Open door policy: You are always welcome
to come visit the school and classroom. We
encourage parent participation throughout
the school year!
Phone calls: This is also an effective way to
communicate with the staff, if something
needs to be addressed right away.
ROLE OF THE EA
Your child will have the opportunity to be
supported by an Educational Assistant (EA)
this year. Your child's classroom teacher is
invested in implementing the curriculum and
works alongside the EA and IST to come up
with the best supports possible to help your
child succeed. It is then the EA's role to help
implement these supports and intervene
when necessary.
The classroom teacher and EA work together
in tracking the student’s behaviour, which may
involve using ABC charts. Evidence for learning
is being collected through assessments and
observations by the teacher. This may include
during times of support from the EA, but the
teacher is collecting the evidence in relation to
the curricular learning goals. It is the teacher's
role to communicate these findings with
parents.
