Troublesome or LifeSaver?
Dawki Chemicals is a growing company with a workforce strength of 450 workmen. The company
had reported the best productivity and operational capacity amongst its competitors in the industry.
The company had various expansion plans with the aim of doubling its turnover from 25 to 50 crores
within a span of 2 years.
Mr. Amit was a level 5 operator who was hired to operate the lathing machine. He was very qualified
and had a good amount of work experience on similar machines in his previous stints. His
performance was considered as extraordinary during his six months probationary period in the
company.
He was then transferred to the tableting department. He realised, after spending some time in the
department. The operators in this department made realise double the department’s productivity as
well as reduction in the costs. The employees, inspite of being overworked, were paid the same salary
as compared to the other departments. Amit, approached the employees and explained them that they
were being made fools by the company. The employees realised his point.
Shortly, Amit was made the head of the Employees’ Union and the General Secretary of Dawki
Chemicals, Mr. Abhishek, welcomed him to the fold of the union. Amit, after some days organised
a meeting with Abhishek about the problem with the tableting department. He argued that he will
instruct the operators to reduce their output to the original level because of low salary pay.
The supervisor, Mr. Ameya, was instigated by Amit’s statement and accused him of being a
‘maniac’. He stated that prior of Amit’s coming to the department there were no agitations and the
employees worked smoothly before. On getting a threat to transfer him back to his previous
department, Amit challenged Ameya and told him that he could never transfer him back as the Union
has become active now and will revolt if any such thing happened.
The Production manager of the company asked the supervisor to take care of the problem without
affecting the production. The company had to meet the goals after the next two years to remain
competitive in the industry.
Question: As the supervisor in the tableting department, how would you resolve this problem?
