2. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

1.1
Quality
The * N * malleable fittings comply fully with the requirements of the standards
ISO 49 and EN 10242, Design Symbol A.
To ensure the leak tightness each malleable fitting is tested. This test consists of
a pressure test of at least 5 bar air under liquid. In addition, the * N * malleable
fittings are checked by means of samples on the:
• quality of the material
• tolerances of dimensions and threads
• quality of the zinc layer with zinc coated fittings

1.2
Material
The material of the * N * malleable fittings is cast iron according to EN 1562. For
Design Symbol A this is GJMW 400-05 or GJMB 350-10.
A number of malleable fittings is manufactured from material according to Werk-
stofnumber 1.0718, designation 9SMnPb28 (machining steel). These fittings are
marked with an asterisk * in the tables in Chapter 4.
The zinc coated types are hot-dip zinc coated. The zinc meets the requirements of
the standards ISO49 and EN10242.

1.3
Finish
The * N * fittings can be supplied both in untreated (black) execution as hot-dip
zinc coated. The screw threads are applied after the zinc-coating.
The zinc plating is done with the thermal process (according to ISO 1460). The
result of this treatment is a corrosion resistant zinc coating with a thickness of at
least 63 µm. The applicable tolerances on the malleable fittings apply to both the
black as the zinc coated types. See Chapter 1.6.

1.4
Operating and testing pressures
The standard working pressures and temperatures for the use of malleable
fittings are shown in the graph 1 below.
For normal applications the minimum operating temperature for malleable fittings
is -20° C up to 300° C.
If other or higher requirements for special applications are necessary, you may
contact Nefit Industrial, Sales Department.

2. INSTALLATION DATA

2.1
Pipes
The fittings are suitable for the connection with steel pipes according to EN 10255 M
and H versions, black or galvanized. These steel tubes can be best used in
combination with malleable fittings. The pipes have to be provided with screw thread
according to ISO 7-1.

2.2
Threads Rp and R according to ISO 7-1
2.2.1
Dimensions
The cylindrical internal thread Rp of the fittings has such a length L2, that the external
conical thread R can be screwed in far enough for getting a good tightening.
The conical male thread R has a ratio of 1:16. The total thread length of the external thread
exists of 3 parts, see Figure 3:
1. the length a (the distance to the reference area), this has such a dimension and
tolerance that the fitting can be screwed in by hand in the internal thread
2. the length b, the part of the thread where the seal is achieved
3. the end of the screw thread c, this should remain visible when mounted
Table 4 below shows the most important data of conical sealing thread R according to
ISO 7-1.

2.2.2
Cutting of threads
The sealing of the connection must be established through the contact between
the two connecting metal parts. So it is important to cut the threads accurately
according to the standard. For checking the dimensions of the threads it is
important that the right and calibrated measuring instruments are used, such as
screw-, pen- and ring gauges.

2.3
Seals
The sealing material serves only to fill out the deviations from the theoretical thread
profile. The sealing of the connection must be mainly established through the
contact between the two connecting metal parts.

The sealing material should be specified by the designer of the installation in

cooperation with the manufacturer/supplier depending on the application and the
transport medium.

Nefit Industrial does not supply gaskets in or with the flat couplings.
The material and the thickness of the gaskets must by specified by the designer in
collaboration with the manufacturer/supplier depending on the application and the
transport medium.
For recommendations of the diameters of the gaskets see table 5.

2.4
Mounting of threaded fittings
Use the appropriate sealing material and apply it according to the requirements of
the supplier. Do not use too much material on the threads, which can lead to roll up
and untight connections.
Screw the external thread by hand into the internal thread but not further than the
length a and then turn with a key further max. up to a + b. The seal can otherwise
be destroyed by rolled-up material or by damage of the screw thread.

2.5
Mounting of conical couplings

To make sure that the conical couplings are leak tight after assembly, the following assembly
instructions must be taken into account.

8/10
1. make sure that the tubes are as straight as possible opposite each other. The
angle between the axes of the screw threads must not exceed 0.5 °.
2. make sure that the threaded piece, directly behind the conical face, is clean.
3. Check if the collar of the pressure piece is sufficient free of the thread piece.
4. clean the conical sealing surface of both the thread piece and the pressure piece.
5. Then apply a lubricating oil film on both conical sealing surfaces.

Never mount the conical sealing surfaces dry on each other. When tightening the
union nut the conical surfaces can "eat" and the pressure piece can be positioned
wrong. This can cause a coupling initially to be leak tight but later to start leaking.

2.6
Tightening torque for conical couplings
To obtain a good seal it is important to tighten the conical sealing with the right torque.
NEFIT has established an own standard for the tightening torque for the couplings.
The table below gives the torque depending on the nominal diameter of the coupling.

thread DN torque
(inch) (mm) (Nm)

1/8 6 65
1/4 8 65

2 50 245
2 1/2 65 245
3 80 245
4 100 300

table 6. recommended torque for conical couplings

2.7
Mounting of flat couplings

9/10
Nefit Industrial does not supply gaskets or sealing rings in or with the flat couplings.
Material and thickness of the gaskets must be chosen depending on the application.
For applying the gasket the coupling must be dismounted and the surfaces be
checked on external pollution, corrosion and damage.
Then the gasket can be put in the coupling and the nut can be hand-tightened until
the coupling is closed.
Note: the angle between the axes of the 2 coupling halves must not be greater than ±
0.5 °.
The torque to be applied is depending on the size of the coupling, the gasket and the
test pressure (to be determined by the constructor).
