I.Introduction
Dengue is fast emerging pandemic-prone viral disease in many parts of the
world. Dengue flourishes in urban poor areas, suburbs and the countryside but also
affects more affluent neighborhoods in tropical and subtropical countries.Dengue is a
mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes causing
a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. The incidence of dengue has
increased 30-fold over the last 50 years. Up to 50-100 million infections are now
estimated to occur annually in over 100 endemic countries, putting almost half of the
world’s population at risk.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector that transmits the
viruses that cause dengue. The viruses are passed on to humans through the bites of
an infective female Aedes mosquito, which mainly acquires the virus while feeding on
the blood of an infected person.

So we, the researchers find a way on how to prevent these diseases

and lessen the number of mosquitoes. We conducted Makahiya (mimosa pudica) as
ovicide against mosquito eggs/larvae to solve these problem. We use this product
(makahiya) because it is easy to to find it especially here in rural places. Makahiya
extract contains the phytochemicals alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and triterpenes
that can kill mosquito eggs/larvae.

A. Background of the Study

 Mosquitoes are one of the most unwanted and harmful pests known to man.
 In feeding on blood, some of them transmit extremely harmful human and livestock
diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, filariasis, and dengue.
 Some authorities argue accordingly that mosquitoes are the most dangerous
animal on earth.
 Throughout the history, many plants have been used as an alternative insecticide,
ovicide, and repellents. Ovicides are any substances that are designed to kill eggs,
especially the eggs of insects.
 The makahiya plant is widely distributed in the Philippines in open, moist, waste
places, open grasslands, and open thickets at low and medium, altitudes in settled
areas.

B. Statement of the Problem

The scientific study aimed with the investigation of makahiya as an
alternative ovicide against mosquito eggs/larvae. Specially, it seeks to answer the
following questions:
1. What is the mortality rate of the mosquito eggs/larvae when exposed to:
A. M1- 10 g of makahiya with 100 ml of water.
B. M2- 20 g of makahiya with 100 ml of water.
C. M3- 30 g of makahiya with 100 ml of water.
D. M4- 40 d of makahiya with 100 ml of water.
2. What are the effect of Makahiya extract after having been exposed to the
treatments within:
A. 10 minutes.
B. 20 minutes.
C. 30 minutes.
D. 40 minutes.
3. What is the product effectivity in the shortest time 5-15 minutes?
4. How long will the product last?

C. Hypothesis
The study will test the hypothesis that the makahiya (mimosa pudica) has the
potential to be an alternative ovicide against mosquito eggs larvae.

D. Significance of the Study

The augmenting number of Dengue cases not only in our country but also to
other countries all over the world experiencing the abnormal change in weather is not of
recent origin to us. Along with this difficult situation, there are two-winged, dipterous
insects that hatch their eggs for a short time, reducing the size of their larvae and become
“nervous-biters”. In that case, they are harder to intercept in flight that is why it is more
advisable to focus on the places where they lay their eggs.
The researchers conducted this study in order to lessen the proliferation of
mosquitoes or prevent the eggs from hatching using the Makahiya Mimosa pudica roots
extract as an ovicide. As the experiment was proven to be effective, it is relevant to
propagate the plant for mass production and communicate the results to other people. It
is also significant to conduct experiments about the other potentialities of the said plant,
such as the anti fertility property of its root extract.

E. Scope and Limitation

The researchers used makahiya as a raw material in utilizing makahiya as
alternative ovicide against mosquito eggs/larvae. The makahiya (mimosa pudica) was
collected, weighed, boiled in a certain amout of water which is 100 ml, filtered then stored
in a small container then tested. Four set-ups were prepared to determine the
concentration of mosquito eggs/larvae. Five minutes was given for every test to observe
which is the most effective to lessen the number of mosquito eggs/larvae.Based on the
test that we make its more effective if we use 40g of makahiya extract and 100ml of water
in a constant time of 10minutes.
The makahiya has its own limitation, first the ovicide is only an alternative. The
effect of makahiya extract on the egg of mosquito depend on its concentration. This
insectiside must be shaking well before using.

F. Definition of Terms
Mimosa pudica - prostrate or semi-erect subshrub of tropical America, and
Australia;heavily armed with recurved thorns and having sensitive soft grey-green leaflets
that fold and droop at night or when touched or cooled. action plant, humble plant, live-
and-die, sensitive plant, shame plant, touch-me-not.
