My internship with the Department of Educational Technology and Library Services

this fall greatly enhanced my knowledge of Library services. I worked for 120 hours and I
had a great opportunity of learning new staff in a few months that makes me creative.
ETLS is focusing in the new state standards on 21st Century learning, and the increasing
crossover between technology and libraries in all facets of work, formalizing this
relationship seems timely and sensible. ETLS is the central library resource office for
Denver Public Schools. They provide online catalogs (LION) and educational databases to
the Library Media Centers, and also house an extensive central collection of Classroom
Resource, Professional, Video/Multimedia, & Art/Music/PE materials for circulation to DPS
teachers. They have different curriculum in order to cover the all work ahead. Those
curriculums are Classroom Resource Library, Video/Multimedia Library, Library
Acquisitions, and Technical support.

I had to do two projects during my intern. My first project was about DzHow to weed
booksdz. Alisa Antony advised me to work alone in order to get the best practice. She gave
me a challenge to do by my own. What she wants me to do is choose a number from Dewy
Rang and see the exited books in that rang. She wants me to look for the old and unused
books to weed them out. In my opinion, todayǯs students need something new and unique
to find whatever information they want. On the other hand, old books are renewing
recently and DPS orders a lot of new books every year for schools to keep them updating
about all subjects. What I did is looking for books which are very old and unnecessary to
keep them on shelves. I shocked when I found books from 60s and 70s. Those books
should be weed out as soon as possible because there are a lot of new collections talking
about the same subjects in DPS library, and if not, DPS has to buy new resources soon and
keep up-to-date collections. After I finished, Alisa puts them in boxes in order to recycle
and get new books related to those which weeded.

The second project, which I spent 4 weeks working on it, is eBooks. In order to develop the
DPS system to future use, they want to collect all information they have about eBooks in
one place to be easy to found and order. I create a wiki site for several uses and build a
page for eBooks. Then I look for all providers that DPS works with and see which are
having an eBooks and how schools use and order it. I create a spreadsheet on Google and
start working on this project every day with some advices and discussions with my
advisors Janne Cookman and Dave Sanger. The spread sheet shows Venders, Product Name,
Description, Features / Functions, Categories, Ownership Models , Pricing Models ,
Viewing/ Browsing Models , Websites , and Requirements. These spreadsheets shorten a
lot of time for the technology department to collect all information they need. I finally did
my best to present my work in a good way.

Well, the most important thing is I integrate some ideas from my class to do my
project. I use Google spreadsheet and Google site in order to share with my supervisors and
they can edit and publish it any time. I used to use Google in almost every semester during
my study so I was able to work on it easily. Also, Wikispace is the one I try it last semester
to create my class. So, I use it in my eBooks projects to be easy for librarians to navigate the
site in simple way. Other tool I use inside Wikispace is Slideshare. I used this tool before in
one of my presentations. I embed some eBooks slides to the Wikispace site, so librarians
and teachers can see and learn about eBooks anytime.

In the first, I was worried about working in different curriculums in just 10 weeks.
The question in my mind was; can I accommodate all information in this short period of
time? I was wondering if the people will teach me the job they are doing for years to me in
few hours.

In the Circulation Department; Alisa taught me how to work in LION system which is the
library system for DPS. I learned hoe to search, collect, and find books that librarians needs.
I got what was in this system from search to database and went through it many times in
order to see different types of collections. I also learned how to use VIA system in order to
register new books or check out the books. VIA system is what DPS work on it in all
curriculums. The staff use VIA to chick in books, search, see holds, editing databases, renew
books, and check out and it does not for books only but also DVDs, CDs, and eBooks.

In the Cataloging and Database Managing Department, I learned how to put and organize
the databases for all stuff in the library. Bill was my
supervisor and he was very patient on me. Actually this
kind of work was very complicating. Although I saw
everything how to work, I was still want to learn more.
Until one day Bill sat front of me and lat me doing what
he was working on and at that time I finally understood
the work properly. After that I learned how to put new
databases for not only book but also DVDs collections.

In the two weeks I spent with Collection Develops Department, I learned a lot about
working with schools and libraries. Andrea took me with her to many schools to visit. I saw
how schools order the books and organize their libraries. She sowed me how librariansǯ
order books and she was advising them to the best way to order. The great opportunity I
got with this department is working with them at BOOK FAIR. I had never got an
experience like this in my study life. Organize the fair, direct the guests, and attending
workshops that was all new for me. I knew how this kind of fairs going on. Finally, what did
this department teach me is the two searching systems; TitleWaves and TitleSource. These
two online order systems I attended a workshops to learn how they works. TitleWaves is
an online system for Follet Publisher. And the TitleSource is for Baker and Taylor
Publisher. DPS is using these two online systems to order books, eBooks, DVDs, and CDs for
schoolǯs libraries. Schools also can order by themselves. After attending the workshops, I
felt like I knew how to work in these systems and I got an opportunity to work on it with
Andrea to find books and order it.

The last four weeks of my internship; I was working with Jane in order to develop the
eBooks system. I felt for the first time in my internship that I am a leader not a sub worker.
The eBook project I create made my supervisors proud of me. Feeling of developing
something that people will get benefit from it was great. The eBook project lat me teach my
supervisors things they didnǯt even know about it. I was the leader in Wikispace and
inviting librarians and schools to join us. I create a Google spreadsheet that contain all
about eBooks venders and collection which became easy to DPS to fine any information
they need in one place.
