LEARN BY DOING
Lowndes County 4-H camp promotes youth
empowerment through hands-on activities
W
ith 4-H, it’s all about youth building life skills
through hands-on projects ranging from science
and agriculture to health and civic engagement.
So, a Learn by Doing 4-H Camp July 22-23 at the Missis-
sippi State University Lowndes County Extension facility
west of Columbus was filled with learning about robotics,
archery, horses, ATV safety, poultry, gardening, goats,
shooting sports, grilling demonstrations, wildlife and
nutrition.
Under the guidance of 4-H leaders, Extension agents
and volunteers, kids ages 8-18 gained knowledge and skills
that boost self-confidence and independence — all while
experiencing what 4-H stands for: head, heart, hands and
health.
Hannah Crowley, 18, holds one of the many baby goats brought to camp.
Campers took turns leading older goats around the covered arena as they
learned proper showmanship techniques.
Assistant Extension Professor Mariah Smith Morgan helps Alexa Roberts, 9, make a circuit on a small paper card during a STEM session on Monday at the Lown-
des County Extension Office. Alexa is the daughter of Stephen and Amelia Roberts.
A
ugust may be considered the last month
of summer, but school bells will soon be
ringing. For the transitional weeks ahead,
the Mississippi State University Extension Ser-
vice offers four free Quick Bites programs on a
variety of topics.
Quick Bites are interactive video sessions
offered from noon to 1 p.m. at area county Exten-
sion offices on designated Thursdays. Sessions
will be also held in Bost 409 on the MSU cam-
pus. Sign up is required.
