d. Discussion
Definition of Terms:
 Geography - Geography is the study of places and the relationships between
people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical
properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They
also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and
the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography
seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how
they develop and change over time.
Strategy: Interactive Discussion and Group Sharing
Questions:
1. What is geography?
It is the study of the physical characteristics and environment of the Earth
2. How does the study of geography develop?
The term "geography" comes to us from the ancient Greeks, who needed a
word to describe the writings and maps that were helping them make sense
of the world in which they lived. In Greek, geo means “earth” and -
graphy means “to write.” Using geography, Greeks developed an
understanding of where their homeland was located in relation to other
places, what their own and other places were like, and how people and
environments were distributed. These concerns have been central to
geography ever since. Of course, the Greeks were not the only people
interested in geography. Throughout human history, most societies have
sought to understand something about their place in the world, and the
people and environments around them.
3. Who are the Great Geographers who have contributions in the development
of geography?
The great philosophers are Zheng He, Al Idrisi, Immanuel Kant, Carl Ritter,
Ptolemy, Marco Polo, etc.
4. What are the contributions of Marco Polo in the development of geography?
Marco Polo was one of the first and most famous Europeans who traveled to
Asia during the Middle Ages. He traveled farther than anyone of his
predecessors during his 24-yearjourney along the Silk Road, reaching China
and Mongolia, where he became a confidant of Kublai Khan.
6. What are the Branches of Geography?

The two branches of geography are physical and human geography. The
physical geography is a major branch of the science and it mainly deals with the
study of the natural characteristics of the earth. It covers both the ones that are on
the earth’s surface as well as those near it while human geography is a main branch
in geography and it mainly covers studies of the human race. This normally
involves their backgrounds, how they interact and the perceptions that they have
for various ideologies affecting them. In addition to this, the discipline also studies
the way in which the groups of people that inhabit the earth organize themselves
on the particular regions that they inhabit.

7. What is the importance of studying geography?

To understand the geography of past times and how geography played important
roles in the evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments. To develop
a mental map of your community, province or territory, country and the world so
that you can understand the “where” of places and events.

e. Generalization
Minute Paper. The students will write the things they have learned for today’s
discussion. They need to write it in a ¼ sheet of paper.
IV. Evaluation
Slogan. The students need to create a slogan which will raise awareness on how they
can preserve and take good care of the natural resources found in the environment.
V. Synthesis
How does geography shaped our environment?
Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and
how they develop and change over time. Geography shaped the environment in a
sense that it is a thought of as a discipline or as a basic feature of our world,
developing an understanding of the subject is important and how do we take good
care of our environment. Some grasp of geography is essential as people seek to
make sense of the world and understand their place in it. Thinking geographically
helps people to be aware of the connections among and between places and to see
how important events are shaped by where they take place. Finally, knowing
something about geography enriches people’s lives—promoting curiosity about
other people and places and an appreciation of the patterns, environments, and
peoples that make up the endlessly fascinating, varied planet on which we live.
VI. Assignment
Illustrate an idyllic geographical location where humans can thrive without damaging
the balance of the ecosystem through Ecological Plan.
