INTRODUCTION

According to the population census 2017 published by the Bureau of Statistics Pakistan, The

population of Pakistan stands at 207,774,520 and that of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is 30,523,371

which is 14.6pc of total population of Pakistan. The sixth most populous metropolitan city of

Pakistan is Peshawar which fills 19.7 Million people in it. Peshawar is one of the dirtiest cities to

live in with respect to cleanliness and pollution as per the listed most-polluted cities by

particulate matter concentration (Whoint. (2019). World Health Organization. Retrieved 23 July,

2019, from https://www.who.int/airpollution/data/cities/en/).

Peshawar is divided in IV administrative zones and the locality where we have collected our data

is the flagship township of Peshawar called Hayatabad which was launched in year ???? and

which is home to 83659 people (Cdgpeshawargovpk. (2019). Cdgpeshawargovpk. Retrieved 23

July, 2019, from https://cdgpeshawar.gov.pk/peshawar-town-2/).

Municipal solid waste generation rate is high in Peshawar region due to the fact that major

population belongs to low or middle income group. The waste collection and disposal service

sector in the province is poor because more than 60pc of the waste remains in the collection

point (https://www.bioenergyconsult.com/peshawar-swm/) and with the help of the wind the

same is spread alongside roads and streets. This uncollected waste is picked up by the scavengers

who are mostly children, who look for recyclable materials for example iron, textiles, plastics,

paper etc.

The municipal government has placed big containers all along the city and is Hayatabad area as-

well so that the solid waste is dumped into these specific sites and daily in the morning the

WSSP workers collect the full container and place and empty one instead. On sites, where the

container does not get filled up daily is picked up accordingly.

Even though the Hayatabad residential area is amongst the top living area in Peshawar but the

area of waste collection and disposal needs a lot of improvement as the residents have to dispose

off the solid waste themselves. Many households pay monthly charges to the scavengers for

collection and disposal of their solid waste bins daily. This waste is then dumped at a specific

site and recyclable material is collected from it which is then sold. The remaining waste is left

dumped over there and resultantly heaps of solid waste is dumped onto open land area as shown

in the picture ????

Open dumping of municipal wastes is widely practiced in Peshawar

It is imperative to collect the data which can inform the local authorities about the availability of

percentage of recyclable, reusable, compostable, biodegradable or combustible etc then each

type of waste is routed to specific suitable mechanism of management mentioned above.

It is only possible to manage the waste once we know about the characteristics and quantity of

the municipal solid waste which we have to collect and dispose off as each type of content needs

specific treatment in order to manage it well.

The canal system which runs through the city of Peshawar is the main dump site of municipal

solid waste for the residents who reside near the canal system and where the canal system is not

routing, the solid waste is dumped on road sides only to be picked up by local authorities liable

to manage solid waste or if not picked, local residents lit it to fire to convert it to ash ignorant of

the fact that this burning of waste contributes to many hazardous chemicals mixed into air

causing several diseases to mankind and crops.

Every incoming premier of the province takes up the solid waste management issue to its priority

list but a concrete Municipal Solid waste management protocol or policy is not made keeping in

view the best practices of managing the solid waste. The principal organization which is liable to

collect and manage the municipal solid waste is Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar which

is established in the year ???? and which has successfully covered ?? percent of waste collection

target of Peshawar area. TELL ABOUT THE RESOURCES OF WSSP AND SOME

FINANCIAL DATA.

With all such resources, the WSSP has not been able to put it best effort into making a clean and

litter free society of Hayatabad and there is a need to go an extra yard for effectively and

efficiently manage the MSW. For any issue to be solved, the most important aspect of problem

solving is the availability of data and information. The information available should be updated

and error free in order to get the best results. We have compiled data and information so that a

proper policy and framework is made in order to get effective and efficient municipal solid waste

management strategy and policy.
