Assignment. 1: Strategy in Teaching Vocabulary

STRATEGY IN TEACHING VOCABULARY

In my Grade 8 class, before I discuss the text “Makato and His Cowrie
Shell”, I taught first the vocabularies found in the story. A day before the
discussion, I gave them 10 words ask them to look its meaning. On the day of
the discussion, I let them define each word and as the teacher, I just
elaborate the meaning and give examples for each. I explain it in English, I
demonstrate it, translate it in Filipino and even translate it also in their mother
tongue (Iloko) just to make sure that they have really understood the
vocabulary words. After the discussion, I gave them an activity to assess their
knowledge and understanding of the words. The following shows the
assessment worksheet and the result of the activity:

INTERPRETATION
The students’ average score is 3.89 or 43.17%. The result shows that
most of the students got low score in the assessment which affects the score of
those student who got a higher score. Therefore, there is something wrong in my
teaching skills; my strategy in teaching vocabulary is not effective.
