MODULE DESCRIPTOR

TITLE Principles of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

MODULE CODE 55-403200
LEVEL 4
CREDITS 20
DEPARTMENT Engineering and Mathematics
SUBJECT GROUP Thermofluids
MODULE LEADER Holly Castleton
DATE OF APPROVAL

MODULE AIM

To introduce the concepts and develop knowledge and understanding of the three core disciplines of
thermofluids, namely: fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer. The delivery pattern will enable
students to design and perform analytical and experimental investigations, and to develop in them the
necessary skills to effectively communicate the outcomes using a range of methods including written reports
and presentations.

MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES

LO Learning Outcome
1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning fluid
mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer.
2 Identify the operating principles and key physical mechanisms which govern and limit the
performance of thermal and fluid systems
3 Apply analytical and experimental investigation to characterise the performance of thermal and
fluid systems

INDICATIVE CONTENT

Fluid Mechanics:
● Control volumes
● Hydrostatics
● Flow regimes
● Internal flow
● Lift and drag mechanisms

Thermodynamics:
● Properties

LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY AND METHODS

● Students will be provided with independent learning material to access and study in advance
of formal lectures where key points of this material will be addressed and expanded upon.
● Tutor-led seminars for smaller classes provide the opportunity for learning material to be
further explored via student-tutor interaction.
● Practical laboratory-based activities provide the students with hands-on experience to
reinforce theoretical principles studied within the module.

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION

Coursework assessment, worth 50% of the module, will be by the submission of a report based on
practical and technical aspects of the module. There will also be an end of year examination (50%)
covering all aspects of the module.

ANY ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS MODULE

Practical laboratory-based activities will be timetabled.

FEEDBACK TO STUDENTS

Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways: coursework submissions will be
made electronically using the university's VLE and feedback will be provided using the following strategies as
appropriate:

● Publication of model solutions to problems

● Oral feedback regarding general performance delivered either during lectures or tutorials as
appropriate addressing examples of good practice and common mistakes
● Written, recorded, online or oral one-to-one feedback delivered in good time to provide the students
with adequate time to reflect on their work

LEARNING RESOURCES FOR THIS MODULE (INCLUDING READING LISTS)

The Blackboard site for this module provides students with a complete set of lecture and tutorial
material including lecture slides, tutorial exercises with worked solutions and, where appropriate,
signposts to independent learning material.

Resource List Online which students may access to core and recommended texts can be
accessed via the resources tab on the module Blackboard homepage.
