BEAM DESIGN USING ACI 318-14 AND 350-06

IMPORTANT NOTE: The spreadsheet has been developed to incorporate the applicable code requirements. The
user should treat the spreadsheet as a tool and not an all-encompassing solution. The spreadsheet is not a
substitute for knowledge of the requirements of ACI 318 nor 350. The user shall confirm that the spreadsheet is
applicable to their particular situation.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

This spreadsheet is a design aid for designing concrete beams with axial loads less than 10% of gross compressive
strength (0.10f’cAg) to the requirements of ACI 318-14 and 350-06.  It is not intended to be used for designing the
following types of beams:

1) Deep beams as defined in section 9.9 of ACI 318 and 10.7 of ACI 350
2) Coupling beams in concrete shear walls as defined in section 18.10.7 of ACI 318 and section 21.7.7 of
ACI 350.

This spreadsheet calculates the allowable service and ultimate level moment for flexural members using ACI 350-06
which can be ignored if the designer is using ACI 318-14.

SPREADSHEET ASSUMPTIONS

1) The spreadsheet conservatively ignores compression reinforcement and is limited to beams with a single layer of
tensile reinforcement.

2) The spreadsheet calculates the allowable reinforcement stresses based on the requirements of ACI 350-06,
Article 10.6.4. Concrete beams are typically 1-way members and therefore the spreadsheet does not compute the
stresses for 2-way.
a) For normal environmental exposure, fs,max need not be less than 20,000 psi for one-way  members.  See
Article 10.6.4.1.
b) For severe environmental exposure, fs,max need not be less than 17,000 psi for one-way members  and
20,000 psi for two-way members.  See Article 10.6.4.2.

3) This designer shall note that there are additional requirements for concrete beams in intermediate, ordinary or
special moment frames. The designer shall refer to Chapter 18 of ACI 318 or Chapter 21 of ACI 350.

4) For beams with a depth greater than 36” the designer shall add skin reinforcement per section 9.7.2.3 of ACI 318
or section 10.6.7 of ACI 350.

5) The spreadsheet is only applicable for Normal weight, All-lightweight and Sand-lightweight concrete. It is not
applicable for lightweight concrete with partial sand replacement where the λ factor varies between 0.75 and 0.85
per section 19.2.4.2 and table 19.2.4.2 of ACI 318 or section 11.2.1.2 of ACI 350.

6) The spreadsheet does not calculate the torsional resistance of beams.

7) This spreadsheet is only applicable for beams with vertical stirrups for shear reinforcement. It is not intended for
shear reinforcement placed at an angle to the vertical axis or for bent longitudinal bars used for shear
reinforcement.

1) Select Concrete weight from drop-down menu.
2) Select Exposure Level from the drop-down menu.
3) Input Combined Load Factor (γ)if using ACI 350-06 as the design code.
4) Input Concrete Strength (f’c)

6) Input the Beam width.
7) Select if shear reinforcement is present from drop-down menu.

11) Input Reinforcement Yield Strength (fy)

a) If using ACI 350-06 as the design code the user shall compare the calculated ultimate level  moment
against the reduced nominal moment capacity including durability in TABLE 10.
b) If using ACI 318-14 as the design code the user shall compare the calculated ultimate level  moment
against the reduced nominal moment capacity in TABLE 9.
13) LOAD CASES INCLUDING SEISMIC LOADS
a) For load cases including seismic loads, the durability factor need not be applied per ACI 350-06,  Sections
9.2.6 and 21.2.1.8.  For these load cases, the user shall compare the calculated ultimate  level moment against
the reduced nominal moment capacity in TABLE 9.
14) MAXIMUM COURSE AGGREGATE SIZE
a) Both ACI 318-14 and ACI 350-06 have requirements for the maximum course aggregate size that  can be
