The Beach
We’ll bring your friends to the beach. We will
come by car that day. The beach is not far away.
It will not take long to get there.
We will bring food for lunch. We can put a
sheet on the ground. First we’ll sit down and eat.
After lunch, we will walk around. Your friends
will see pink sand and clean water. They can
swim and play in the waves. They can put sand
in their pails. The main thing is to stay out of the
deep water.
Maybe they will see a bird dive for fish. The
fish will be the bird’s lunch.
Your friends will have fun. We’ll have a good
time at the beach.

Owen’s Bath Time
Owen! It is now your bath time! Go get your
soap and no tricks. Fill the bathtub with water
and get in. I don’t want to hear moans and
groans. You’re going to scrub from head to feet.
You know you’re going to soak until you glow!
Owen! I hear something. Was it a splash?
Keep the water in the bathtub. Don’t splash
water outside the bathtub. Don’t get the rug wet.
The only thing to get wet is you. You can play
once you are clean.
Owen! Did you wash your face? Did you
scrub your legs and feet? I am coming to see.
I want to see you glow.

The Star Birds
I am on a baseball team called the Star
Birds. My best friends are Pete and Mark. They
are on the team, too.
The Star Birds play rain or shine. Our games
start at four at North Park. The coach likes to
start on time. Fans come to watch us play.
In our first game, I got a fly ball. It was hit
hard and came at me. The fans cheered loudly.
I ran fast and made the catch.
Then our team was up to bat. Pete made
a run. So did Mark. I was up next and had a
great hit. I made the play of the game! The
Star Birds won.

Boo, the Poodle
My sister Harper and I wanted to get a dog.
We read books about all kinds of dogs. Harper
wanted a dog with black fur. I wanted a dog with
brown fur.
Our father said maybe someday we could
get a dog. He said we would have to walk it. We
agreed and said we would take turns.
One night there was a noise outside. It was
like a whine coming from the back door. I could
hear a dog barking. Was Dad fooling us?
Just then a poodle with black and brown fur
hurled into the room! She jumped into our laps,
licked our faces, and wagged her tail. We adore
our new dog, Boo.

Owl’s Clean House
Owl ran around cleaning her house. Then
Owl sat down to rest. Mouse was at the door.
Owl shouted, “Don’t soil my house with mud.”
Mouse shook mud off her feet.
Skunk came by and rang the bell. “Skunk,
you have mud on your paws,” Owl said out loud.
“Please wipe your paws on the ground now.”
“Don’t be such a grouch,” said Skunk with
a scowl. She flew in the house and left mud
on the floor.
All Owl could do was frown. Mouse and
Skunk cleaned up the mess. Owl was filled with
joy. She was proud of her house. Owl said,
“Skunk and Mouse, shall we go outside? We
will visit on the lawn.”

The Greedy Bird
My mother and I went to the store. I got
tired and hungry. I asked my mother for some
money to buy a cookie. She said she was thirsty.
So she bought us treats.
I got a cookie with frosting. My mother
got tea with honey. We sat at a bench outside
to rest and eat.
Then a bird came by us. It pecked my
cookie. A piece broke off. The bird pushed the
piece aside. Then the bird took the rest of my
cookie. It flew away, taking the cookie with it.
I was so surprised! I shouted, “Stop that
thief. It is stealing my cookie.”
My mother laughed and bought me a
new cookie.

Be Neat When You Eat
Tonight I made a mess at the table.
Dad said, “Try to be neat when you eat.
You don’t want to be so messy.”
What would it be like to be even messier?
I might pile my sloppy food into a high hill. But
then it would start to spoil and get smellier
and smellier.
I might make my food fly across the table.
That would be a silly sight. But it would make
the table dirtier and dirtier.
“I don’t think I want to be messier after all,”
I said.
“Let’s have some apple pie,” said Dad.
I was neat when I ate the pie. I was the
neatest at the table!

Billy’s Happy Day!
Today was a great day at school. I am so
happy! I was hopeful Dad would ask me what’s
new. And he did!
“The teacher chose my story as the best
one of the week,” I replied. “I read it slowly and
loudly to the whole class. Everyone clapped at
the end. I was so surprised!”
“Wonderful!” Mom said. “Billy, will you
please reread it to us?”
So I unpacked my backpack. I took out my
story. I unfolded the paper. Then I read my
story again.
Mom and Dad listened to me read. They
loved my story. They told me it was likely the very
best story ever. They even asked me to reread it
one more time.
