Fresh and Saltwater Systems Unit

Water Project
Due: Friday, December 13th, 2013

Project:
You will be assigned a specific water issue. After researching your issue you will create a
power point presentation. You need to explain the issue along with its relevance to
Calgarians. You will need to include useful photos and diagrams to demonstrate your
understanding of the concepts presented. Your presentation needs to be educational,
informative, interesting and well organized.

Objectives:
Research a water issue on several online sites
Become familiar with how it affects Calgarians
Better understand the complex interactions between water and ourselves
Use photos and diagrams to allow us to better understand the water issue

Marking:
See attached rubrics for marking criteria.

Due date: Friday, December 13th, 2013

One of the following water issues will be assigned in class:

Calgary’s water source quality-Bow River watershed & water cycle


Calgary’s water transport systems-pipes, pumps, valves, bottles, etc.
Home water uses
Business water uses
Farming & irrigation water uses
Recreational water uses
Power generation water uses
Wildlife water uses
Calgary’s water treatment plants-sewage & storm sewers
Groundwater and well water systems
Climate changes and world wide precipitation patterns
Alberta Oil Sands - water needs and wants in conflict
Calgary’s future water needs and wants in conflict
Distribution of the World’s Fresh Water – How does Canada rate? What does
this mean for Calgary?
Power Point Presentation

Step 1: Research your water issue using the internet or any other resources first.

Step 2: You should be using Google Advanced Search or the Scholar option on Google to
ensure that you are using reputable websites.

Step 3: Gather and store important information, photos and diagrams.

Step 4: Create a GOOGLE PRESENTATION using 10 slides


Slide # 1: Introduction including name, class, date, title, and picture(s)
Slides # 2 to 8: Body consisting of 5 main points/issues (CLEARLY identified) that
are well explained. Be sure to show how these issues affect Calgarians (this may
not be explicitly discussed on the websites but you need to make these
connections)
Slide # 9: Concluding statements
Slide # 10: Bibliography of all sources- minimum of 5 sources (font TNR 12)
References need to have the following format:
Website Name, Specific Website Page Title, Date retrieved, URL

Step 5: Share your presentation with me by the due date. Click on share and add my
email address to list of shared people.

Performance Indicators:

Level 1 = student is performing below expected standard


Level 2 = student is performing in lower range of expected standard
Level 3 = student is performing in upper range of expected standard
Level 4 = student is performing beyond the expected standard
