Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction

The field of education has many standards that teachers are required to abide by. These

standards go beyond curriculum and work towards nurturing the overall well-being of the

students in our classrooms. These standards are put in place to ensure educators are held

accountable for their actions, and to ensure that educators are proving students with an education

that meets the rigorous curriculum requirements. As a teacher candidate, these standards provide

guidelines for me to follow to ensure I am providing my students with fair, equitable

opportunities to succeed. I believe these standards shape better teachers and are a necessary part

of the teaching profession.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

INTASC Standards.

The INTASC Standards include a progression of standards, beginning with the learner

and learning, that all teachers are required to follow. These standards progress as follows: The

learner and learning, content, instructional practice, and professional responsibility. By abiding

by these standards, the teacher ensures that they are meeting the individual needs of the students

in their class. By not only holding students accountable to learning, and being dedicated to self-

learning as a teacher, we are creating an environment that encourages learning at all levels,

ultimately improving the field of education. The following artifacts listed connect to the

INTASC Standards:

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators.

The Statement of Purpose as outlined by the NYS Code of Ethics for Educators is as

follows:

“The Code of Ethics is a public statement by educators that sets clear expectations and

principles to guide practice and inspire professional excellence. Educators believe a commonly

held set of principles can assist in the individual exercise of professional judgment. This Code

speaks to the core values of the profession. "Educator" as used throughout means all educators

serving New York schools in positions requiring a certificate, including classroom teachers,

school leaders and pupil personnel service providers.”

With this, educators are held accountable to ethical practice, ensuring students are treated with

the upmost respect and fair practice. The following artifacts listed connect to the NYS Code of

Ontario Teacher Ethical Standards.

Similar to the NYS Code of Ethics for Educators, Ontario has a similar philosophy of

abiding by ethical standards when teaching. The Ontario Ethical Standards and their descriptions

are as follows:

CARE: The ethical standard of Care includes compassion, acceptance, interest and

insight for developing students' potential. Members express their commitment to students'

well-being and learning through positive influence, professional judgment and empathy

in practice.

RESPECT: Intrinsic to the ethical standard of Respect are trust and fair-mindedness.

Members honour human dignity, emotional wellness and cognitive development. In their

professional practice, they model respect for spiritual and cultural values, social justice,

confidentiality, freedom, democracy and the environment.

TRUST: The ethical standard of Trust embodies fairness, openness and honesty.

Members' professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, guardians and the

public are based on trust.

INTEGRITY: Honesty, reliability and moral action are embodied in the ethical standard

of Integrity. Continual reflection assists members in exercising integrity in their

professional commitments and responsibilities.

Conclusion

This section outlined all of the standards that teachers are required to abide by in the field

of education. The artifacts I have chosen to share in this portfolio project all, in some way,

connect to the standards above. I have taken the time to describe each standard and align them to

my included artifacts to provide you with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of these

teaching requirements, and my ability to include them in my work. As mentioned above, I

appreciate having access to these standards as they hold me accountable to being the best

possible teacher, both with instructing curriculum and treating each student in my classroom with

the respect and appreciation they deserve.
