Issue 334 August 2019

First Phase of the Village Hall Declared Open

W ith a cut from Vic Cross’s golden scissors the ribbon fell away and the
new kitchen part of the refurbishment was declared open. Around eighty-
five villagers came along to the more formal evening
to see the completed first phase of the Village Hall
Refurbishment some seven years after it was first
recognised that the Hall needed a serious upgrade.
Celebrating with some fizz and a buffet, those who
attended were able to see the improvements that
have been made. The revised and illuminated sign-
age means that people will no longer drive past the
Hall, the improved entrance and driveway will make
those visiting the Hall by car or by foot that bit safer
and the new cement boarding makes the Hall much
more appealing from the outside. Meanwhile, on the
inside, the assessible toilets and newly-finished Vic cuts the ribbon
kitchen will make the Hall a more attractive venue as part of the opening
ceremony.
for parties and life celebrations. (More on page 8)

Some attendees gather outside before joining others in

the hall.

Mallard News ‘Histry Bits’
th
Here we have David’s 50 ‘Histry Bit’. Amazing! Thank you very much, David.
They are all so interesting and please keep them coming.
‘Histry Bits’.... Mr. Perkins
For my tenth birthday I was given a horse. I didn’t want a horse. I hadn’t asked for a
horse. But between them, my terrifying godmother Marjorie Morton and my father de-
cided that I should have one. It duly arrived in an army surplus horsebox, towed by a
rattling Morris van. The horse, which was actually a largish pony, was called Mr. Per-
kins, and he seemed friendly enough during our first meeting, his gaze following my
godmother closely as she took me through the various stages of saddling up. He was still
watching as the van and horsebox turned into Drunken Drove and disappeared.
That was when he bit my father on the bottom. It wasn’t just a little nip, it was a fully-
fledged mouthful. Dad shot up rigid, clutching his posterior using language distinctly
unsuitable for my ten year old ears. It was the opening shot in a battle of willpower that
would continue for the entire time Mr. Perkins was with us.
After I’d got over the initial shock of becoming a horse owner I began to quite like the
idea. I had visions of leisurely rides along Peddars Way, with, perhaps, a stop for a pic-
nic lunch under a tree, and a carrot for my faithful four-legged friend. How wrong could
a boy be? For a start, the bloody animal refused to go anywhere near Peddars Way – or,
indeed anywhere else I might want him to go, literally digging in his hooves and refusing
to budge. What he wanted was to stay in his nice, warm loose-box, or, if the weather was
fine, to join his new-found friends Duchess and Duke, the two remaining cart horses, on
the big pasture behind the barn, from whence no amount of shouting or carrot bribes
could extract him. On the few occasions when we did manage to get him saddled up, he
would lean against the door of his stable trapping the legs of anybody foolish enough to
try to mount him.
As with all horses, the time came when he needed to be re-shod. The plan was that Aunt
Marjorie would ride over to Massingham on her chestnut mare, and escort Mr. Perkins
and myself to Charlie Mountain’s smithy in Harpley, after which we would make our
separate ways home.
On the outward leg of the journey the pony behaved himself beautifully – possibly be-
cause he was almost as scared of Aunt Marjorie as I was – and I
spent a happy hour in the ancient forge watching Charlie trimming the pony’s hooves,
and fitting new shoes in place of the old.
The homeward leg was faster than the outward, with Mr. Perkins still behaving himself,
and all would have been well if it hadn’t been for the train. We’d just crossed the tracks
at the bottom of Station Hill when it chuffed and clanked into view. The pony had obvi-
ously never seen a train before, and was quite simply petrified. Rearing up in terror, his
new steel shoes slipping and sliding on the smooth tarmac surface of the road, he shot
off up the hill towards the village, with me clinging desperately to his neck. There were
few cars on the road back then, and fortunately we didn’t meet one as, without slacken-
ing our pace, we charged past the Little Massingham turn-off, towards the village. I re-
member desperately shouting for help, and people running towards us as we rounded the
last corner and onto the green. And there, quite suddenly, Mr. Perkins stopped, lathered
with sweat and foaming at the mouth. Unable to hold on any longer, I slid over his head
onto the soft grass beneath, not completely sure whether I was dead or alive.
That was the last time I rode Mr. Perkins. He was sent back to the stables where he’d
come from, and since that day, almost sixty years ago, I have never ridden a horse, and
don’t intend to start now. (See picture on page 5 right) David Miller

Mallard News
Gert & Daisy.... .... Well, here we are agin.
Yew will be pleased ter hear that we hev got ter the bottom of our investigation into Mr
Bickerton (yes, we are naming and shaming!) who wus reported heving an improper
conversation with a cupple of our well-respected pensioners. It seems tha he wus trying
ter entice them into his garden ter see a sculpture of a hare who he has named Pubic.
Laso he tried ter git one of them into his shepherd’s hut. We wus horrified ter find out
the other one has already been there! So, a warning ter awl over the age of 80 – keep
away!
Gert nearly hed ter dew a swimming rescue the other wek when Judy Goodings dog
dived in ter the pond. Thankfully, he cud swim better than her so her diving skills were-
n’t needed.
We both went ter Houghton Hall ter meet the organisers of the Houghton Festival. They
wus luvly people and explained abowt the festival and all the other things there – yoga
and meditation area etc. There wus bits ter eat and we hed a glass of Prosecco Sangria,
sitting outside in the evening sunshine - how the other half live! We wus so impressed
we are thinking of going ter the Festival but think we need ter find some 60’s hippy
clothes and have plenty of sleep first!
We will be playing bowls a few days after we’ve written this so we will give you a full
report next toime. It’s women agenst men so there’s no telling what will happen.
At the toime of writing this there is talk of a heatwave come next week. We must try ter
stay cool on very hot days so we are telling everyone ter go ter the Village shop where
Mark has had air conditioning fitted. It will be lovely in there.
In the Church report larst month we read that our luvly Vicar, Judith, mentioned Love
Island. This really surprised us – even we don’t watch that! Also we read that it is offi-
cial that love is in the air. Well, if that’s the case we will be outside breathing deeply to
catch a bit of that.
Gert went ter see her granddaughter Chloe arrive at Litcham School Prom. She looked
absolutely stunning (Chloe, not Gert!). Awl the girls looked amazing with their wonder-
ful dresses and very smart cars. One lad even turned up in an ice cream van. Sid took
their grandson, Oliver, ter his Prom at Sussex Barn in his old Morris 10/4 car. A big red
double decker bus and a tractor and trailer brought some of the youngsters. We guess
they awl try to outdo each other with transport. We never hed anything loike that in our
day.
Good luck ter awl those youngsters who are now going on ter 6 th form or college or ap-
prenticeships. We hope yew awl enjoy the school holidays. Loike us, you will probably
be get roped in for grandparent duties – luckily we can always hand them back!
Dew yew keep atroshing - Gert and Daisy.
Another little joke from Keith Skipper – a proper ol’ Norfolk boy!
Horry walks into a dentist’s office and announces: “I think I’m a moth.”
The dentist replies curtly: “You should not be here. You should be seeing a psychiatrist.”
Horry says quickly: “I am seein’ a psychiatrist.”
“Well, then, just what are you doing here?” asks the dentist.
Horry replies: “Well, your light wuz on”.

Hall Opening continued… There are So Many People to Thank….
The trustees thanked all those major donors who provided
the main funding for the refurbishment as follows:
Parish Council-The Hall, Parish Council-Feasibility Study, Garfield Weston Founda-
tion, Norfolk Community Foundation/Borough Council, The Mallard, The Bowls Club,
National Lottery Awards for All, TFCC Communities Foundation (WREN), Tesco Bags
for Life, West Norfolk Wins, Bingo Evenings, Film Night, Tennis and Multisport Club,
and the Quiz Night.
The trustees gave a big thank you to all those
individuals and families who have donated to the
Refurbishment, either by attending or organising
fund-raisers or by an individual donation.
Thanks were also given to Jo and Mark Froment
who donated the carcasses, doors and ovens to
modernise the kitchen. Special mentions were
given to those ‘Refurbishment Volunteers’ who
had completed work to
save on costs namely, The new kitchen
Robin Arbenz for the
kitchen, Tom and Mike Read for fitting the kitchen worktops,
Brian Francis for painting the toilets, corridor and kitchen, Baz
Pratt for the signs and design, Arthur Allen for financial planning
and to Alan Petto for making and refurbishing handy bits of met-
alwork.
It is clear that Quinn Construction Services were the right compa-
ny to complete the building work. Under the calm and considered
management of Paul Quinn the various constructions have gone
very smoothly with excellent rapport between Paul and the Re-
furbishment Committee. Equally, Christian Mountney, our char-
tered surveyor, who has been with the development since day one
devising plans and helping with always sound advice, proved to

Phase 1 of the refurbishment took place after consulting with
local people about their ideas on how to improve the Hall. The
evening concluded with villagers being consulted on what improvements they would like
to see as Phase 2 of the Refurbishment.

The Strollers’ Stag Party
On Sunday 30th June the Strollers met at The Stag in West
Acre. The weather was perfect for our walk which took us
through woods, across open heath and by the River Nar.
For many of us it was a leisurely amble searching for interesting
flora and fauna. For others it was a brisk stroll through beautiful
country side with delightful views. The two groups separated at
the ford, where children paddled in the stream, and met up
again at the pub to enjoy a good Sunday lunch.
It was a delight to wade through the grass and see grasshoppers
leaping before us. Much time was spent identifying various
wildflowers such as heath bedstraw and insects including but-
terflies, hoverflies and beetles. Those who took the longer route
were rewarded by beautiful protected verges adorned with a profusion of wild flowers.
Hopefully, we will have another memorable walk in July when we can forget the chaos
of the modern world for an hour or two. Andrew Bickerton

Anyone for Pétanque?

finish.

We had a lovely time as it was Dolly’s birthday and

we had a little party with sherry afterwards. We were
going to have the sherry first to warm us up, as it was
quite chilly, but thought we could hurt someone by

Calling All Young Actors

I will be adapting my children’s book ‘BUMBLE!’ to a play for children.
I have already got some enthusiastic volunteers from Massingham Youth
Club but there are still a number of parts available plus other
roles including musical accompaniment, dance and many other
jobs required in a production.
The plan is to stage it at Great Massingham Village Hall in December with
auditions and rehearsals beginning in September. It will be a big commitment
for everyone but, hopefully, a fantastic and enjoyable experience.
If you are aged between six and fourteen and are interested in being involved either
e-mail me on andrewbick@btinternet.com or phone 01485520307.
Please get your parents’ consent. Andrew Bickerton
