HANDPICKING: A SEPARATION TECHNIQUE
HANDPICKING is a method/technique/way of separating substances, components, ingredients in
which we remove unwanted or selected substances from the mixture by using our hand so that a
certain mixture will be properly used and benefited.

In our daily lives, we come across so many situations in which we have to separate some substances
from a mixture in order to get a suitable substance for use. Some of the substances are easily
separable just by taking out the impurities with hand. This method of separation is known
HANDPICKING.

4.1 Introductory Activity A. Review: MINUTE TO WIN IT!
Material used: Video Clip of the said game
Ask the pupils: (INTEGRATING MATH and ICT)
1. Minute is referring to what?
2. How many seconds are there in one minute?
3. What particular size of hand in a clock/watch represent a minute hand?
10 minutes 4. If you were given a chance to be a millionaire in one minute, how would you spend the
money? And why?
Teacher will review previous lesson through “MINUTE TO WIN IT” game and give the
mechanics on how game will be played.
Ask the pupils:
1. What heterogeneous mixture that will not completely dissolve and will settle down at the
bottom? ( SUSPENSION )

Vocabulary Game: WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
( INTEGRATING LITERACY, ENGLISH and ARTS )
Strategy: Have the pupils go to their respective learning stations. The teacher will present the words
to be unlocked, she will then give the meaning and let the group expound it’s meaning through
illustration, sentence and connection. Teacher will explain the process of the game. The group who
got the correct response will be given a chance to pick ONE SQUARE worth million. Words to be
process will be shown on the TV screen.

3 minutes which we remove unwanted or selected substances from the mixture by using our hand so that a
certain mixture will be properly used and benefited.

Each group will give two representatives to play the game. Mechanics of the game will be explain by
the teacher. Whoever wins will get a chance to pick 1 square of surprise.
