LESSON: A BETTER WORLD

Level: Level 2

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
Learners will develop their ability to use the language in order to make comparisons in different contexts
Objectives:
● To acquire vocabulary about adjectives
● to reinforce the rules for using comparative adjectives
● To develop speaking skills on using the comparative adjectives

Recommendations: Have a copy of the student handout for you to use if you need the extra activities,
remember to prepare the flashcards and handouts before the class

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION TIME


The best product! (slide2)
• In order to practice the adjectives, each student must select a picture of a
product that will be provided by the teacher.
• They should make a full description of the product taking into account all its
characteristics and qualities, presenting it as the best product ever.
Warm up (WC) 15 min
• The other students should give their opinions about the product and make
questions about it, for example, if the student who is presenting says it is a very
good bag, students may ask; What is it made of? Is it waterproof?

Note: Explain the new vocabulary and introduce more if necessary.


Write on the adjectives the students used for the previous activity and remind
them the rules in order to compare using them.
● Explain: the use and the rules for using the comparative adjectives (slide
3-4)
1) Most one syllable adjectives they have to add –er- like: older, BrightER.

2) One syllable adjective ending in consonant + vowel + consonant, they have


to double the last consonant and add ER like BigGER, FatTER.

3) Two syllable adjective ending in -Y- they have to eliminate it and add –IER- 20 min
(I/SG)
like Tidy – tidier, Easy – EasIER.

4) Two syllable adjectives not ending in –Y- they have to write more before the
adjective like Selfish – more selfish, Patient – more patient.

5) Three or more syllable adjectives they have to write more before the
adjective like Organized – more organized, comfortable – more comfortable.

Discussion activity (slide5)

● Divide the class into two groups and make them discuss about the
Practice (WC) advantages and disadvantages of living in capital cities and small cities. 20 min
● One team will totally agree and provide opinions for living in big capital
cities
● The other team will provide opinions about their preference for small
cities, encourage them to use the comparative structure in every
moment.

Opposite adjectives memory game


● Cute out the opposite adjectives flashcards and face them down on the
board. Those cards have pictures that represent one adjective.
● Ask one of your students to turn one card and guess what adjective is the
card describing then ask him/her to turn another card in order to find the
finding the opposite adjective of the previous card.
● if the student finds a match he/she has to make a comparison using
both adjectives, for example, if they find clean and dirty they can talk
about how some public means of transport are dirtier than others.
Production ● encourage them to discuss their ideas with their peers

● The teacher must say if they provide the correct adjective for the picture
so you should check them in advance; the adjectives are: dirty, clean,
wet, dry, big, small, boring, funny, near, far, easy, difficult, empty, full, fast,
slow, heavy, light, new, old, tall, short, strong, weak, ugly and beautiful
A better world
● Students will choose a problem or a current situation that they dislike. They
should talk about how different it is now in relation to the past making
comparisons; they also need to say how they could improve that specific
situation for better. The Other students will make suggestions or explain
their opinions about it.
● Q&A
● Give feedback regarding student’s performance in the class. Make sure
you are positive in your comments and do not make any negative
individual observation.
● Inform students how many face-to-face classes they have had and where
they should be on the platform according to that. 10 min
Wrap up (WC)
● Ask the students about their experience with the platform Inform the
corresponding area (CA, ID, SC) if necessary.
● Give the students suggestions to improve their skills and motivate them to
complete their online activities.
● Fill out the FICHA TECNICA with the class information.
