1.0 INTRODUCTION

QURAYYAH IPP project is approximately 100 km south of the Port of Dammam on

the coast in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The facility is a two
on one combined cycle configuration consisting of twelve (12) Siemens SGT6-PAC
5000F gas turbine generating units (GTGs), twelve (12) heat recovery steam generators
(HRSGs), six (6) Siemens SST6-4000 steam turbine generators (STGs), and six (6)
seawater cooled condensers.

The purpose of this document is to clarify the amounts of utilities that are required for
the desalination. These utilities in the desalination plant which are classified mainly to:

1- Water required for chemical preparation.

2- Instrument Air required for the actuators of pneumatic valves.

The amount of water required for the chemical preparation is estimated as per the
expected chemical concentrations during the normal operation of the plant, in addition
to the amount of required water for the safety showers and for the normal cleaning
activities either in the daily activities or in the tanks and equipments cleaning.

The amount of instrument air required in the desalination plant is the amount of air
required to operate the pneumatic valves that are used for the opening or closing
positions. The instrument air shall be supplied to each valve through the instrument air
receiver (GNL50-BB001) where the instrument air shall be distributed into 16 boxes to
supply the required amount for each unit contains pneumatic valves.

2.0 Water required for chemical preparation.

The dilution water necessary for chemical preparation shall be supplied to the following
chemical stations:-
1- Coagulant dosing station for DAF unit
2- Flocculant dosing stations for DAF unit (two stations).
3- Coagulant dosing station for Dual Media Filters.
4- De-Chlorination dosing station for RO pass-1.
5- Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 dosing station for Remin unit.

The estimated amount of water to prepare the required batch concentration for each
chemical shall be as following:-

Water required  Water required
No  Chemical Station Name
per batch (L)  per day (L)
1 Coagulant dosing station for DAF unit 200 120
2 Flocculant dosing stations for DAF unit 500 120
Coagulant dosing station for Dual Media
3 200 120
Filters.
De-Chlorination dosing station for RO
4 1000 960
pass-1.
Calcium Hydroxide dosing station for
5 500 480
Remin unit.
6 Total amount of water (Average) 2400 1800

Note-1:- The dosing rate and chemical concentration values will be fine tuned during
commissioning and early start up, so the given water amounts are also subject to fine
tuned.
Note-2:- The calculated daily amounts of water required for each chemical station
shown in the table above are based on the maximum chemical consumption.

3.0 Water required for safety showers.

Water quantity requirement for safety showers to be considered based on each safety
shower operating for 15 minutes per day. A minimum flow rate of 4.5 m3/h for each
safety shower is recommended, so the total required daily water for two safety showers
in the desalination plant shall be calculated as following:-

Quantity required per day per safety shower = 4.5 x (15/60) = 1.125 m3/day

No. of safety showers = 2.0

Total water quantity for safety showers in the desalination plant = 2.0 x 1.125 = 2.25 m3/day

The total water amount required per day for utility aspects is the amount of water for chemical
preparation in addition to the amount of water for safety showers.

Total amount of water for utility aspects = (1.8 m3/day + 2.25 m3/day) x 1.5 = 6.0 m3/ day

The total calculated quantity is multiplied by 1.5 to account for uncertainties in the data used
and to consider the amount that will be used in the cleaning activities.

4.0  Instrument  Air  required  for  the  actuators  of  pneumatic

valves.

The compressed air supply for a pneumatic system should be adequately calculated
and made available in the appropriate quality.
The instrument air that shall be supplied to the desalination plant must be compressed
by the air compressor and completely dry before it enters to any pneumatic valve.
The instrument air for the desalination plant shall be compressed and dried in the main
system then it will be sent to a reservoir which is installed inside the desalination plant
and which is fitted to reduce pressure fluctuations that will be generated in the air
system.
The compressor fills the air receiver which is available as a storage tank.
The instrument air shall be supplied to the pneumatic valves in the desalination plant in
the following locations:-

1- Dual Media Filters.

2- RO pass-1 dumping line
3- RO pass-1 feed lines.
4- RO pass-1 flushing inlet lines
5- RO pass-2 feed lines.
6- RO pass-2 flushing inlet & outlet lines.
7- RO pass-2 main permeate line.
8- Mixed Bed Vessels.
9- Neutralization Pumps discharge lines (recirculation and main discharge).
10- Chemical Dosing Tanks Filling Lines (Sulfuric Acid & Caustic Soda).

The required instrument air for the valves actuator is calculated as per the data that are
supplied by the valve manufacturer considering proper safety factor.

4.1 Dual Media Filters.

For “Dual Media Filters”, each filter has six pneumatic valves. The required air volume
to operate all the valves for each filter shall be calculated as following:-

Air required for each valve (L) x No of valves x Maximum No of “Opening/Closing” per day.

Group (A): Valves of size “DN 200”: -

1- Service In.
2- Service Out.
3- Rinse Outlet.
4- Air Scouring In.

Assume that the above mentioned valves shall be opened/close two times per day, so
the amount of instrument air required for those valves:-

Air required = 2.4 L x 4 valves x 2 “No of open/close per day” = 19.2 L/day

Group (B): Valves of size “DN 350”: -

1- Backwash In.
2- Backwash Out.

Assume that the above mentioned valves shall be opened/close two times per day, so
the amount of instrument air required for those valves:-
Air required = 20 L x 2 valves x 2 “No of open/close per day” = 80 L/day

Page | 6
Water & Environment Technology Company

So the total “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to operate the valves of each
filter:-
19.2 L/day + 80 L/day = 99.2 L/day

As there are six filters in the desalination plant, the “Daily Volume” of instrument air
required for all filters:-

99.2 L/day x 6 Filters = 595.2 L/day “required volume for dual media filters”.

4.2 RO Pass‐1 Dumping Line.

There is just one pneumatic valve installed at the main RO pass-1 feed line as dumping
valve. The opening of this valve shall be interlocked with the ORP meter to protect the
RO membrane against the oxidation by chlorine. In case of high ORP meter reading,
the valve will open immediately.

It is not expected opening the dumping valve every day since it will open in emergency
case as described above, but for safe calculation of instrument air requirements it shall
be assumed that the valve shall open once a day.

Accordingly, the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to open the dumping valve

Air required = 4.3 L x 1.0 valve x 1.0 “No of open/close per day” = 4.3 L/day.

Page | 7

4.3 RO Pass‐1 Feed Lines.

Each RO pass-1 unit has pneumatic valve at its main feed line, since there are three
RO pass-1 units so there are three pneumatic valves at the main feed lines for RO
pass-1 units. The pneumatic valve shall be opened as long as the RO unit is under
normal operation, it will be closed during the flushing period of the RO unit or if the RO
unit is stopped for any reason.

It shall be assumed that three RO pass-1 units shall be operated in the same time,
the pneumatic valves shall “Open / Close” twice a day, accordingly the “Daily Volume”
of instrument air required to operate those valves:-

Air required = 4.3 L x 3.0 valve x 2.0 “No of open/close per day” = 25.8 L/day.

4.4 RO Pass‐1 Flushing Lines.

Each RO pass-1 unit has pneumatic valve at its main flushing line, since there are three
RO pass-1 units so there are three pneumatic valves at the main flushing lines for RO
pass-1 units. The pneumatic valve shall be opened during flushing period of the RO
unit.

It shall be assumed that the pneumatic valves shall “Open / Close” once a day and the
flushing for each of the three RO pass-1 units shall occurred once a day also,
accordingly the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to operate those valves:-

Air required = 20 L x 3.0 valve x 1.0 “No of open/close per day” = 60 L/day.

Page | 8

4.5 RO Pass‐2 Feed Lines.

Each RO pass-2 unit has pneumatic valve at its main feed line, since there are three
RO pass-2 units so there are three pneumatic valves at the main feed lines for RO
pass-2 units. The pneumatic valve shall be opened as long as the RO unit is under
normal operation, it will be closed during the flushing period of the RO unit or if the RO
unit is stopped for any reason.

It shall be assumed that three RO pass-2 units shall be operated in the same time,
the pneumatic valves shall “Open / Close” twice a day, accordingly the “Daily Volume”
of instrument air required to operate those valves:-

Air required = 2.4 L x 3.0 valve x 2.0 “No of open/close per day” = 14.4 L/day.

4.6 RO Pass‐2 Flushing Inlet & Outlet Lines.

Each RO pass-2 unit has pneumatic valve at its main flushing line, since there are three
RO pass-2 units so there are three pneumatic valves at the main inlet flushing lines and
three pneumatic valves at the main outlet flushing lines for RO pass-2 units. The
pneumatic valve shall be opened during flushing period of the RO unit.

It shall be assumed that the pneumatic valves (at the inlet & outlet sides) shall “Open /
Close” once a day and the flushing for each of the three RO pass-2 units shall occurred
once a day also, accordingly the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to operate
those valves:-

Air required = 4.3 L x 6.0 valve x 1.0 “No of open/close per day” = 25.8 L/day.

Page | 9
Water & Environment Technology Company

4.7 RO Pass‐2 Main Permeate Line.

There is just one pneumatic valve installed at the main RO pass-2 permeate line which
shall be opened in case of high back pressure detected through the pressure transmitter
which is installed at the same main permeate line.

It is not expected opening this valve every day since it will open in emergency case as
described above, but for safe calculation of instrument air requirements it shall be
assumed that the valve shall open once a day.

Accordingly, the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to open this valve:-

Air required = 0.3 L x 1.0 valve x 1.0 “No of open/close per day” = 0.3 L/day.

Page | 10
Water & Environment Technology Company

4.8 Mixed Bed Units.

For “Mixed Bed Units”, each unit has eight pneumatic valves. The required air volume to
operate all the valves for each unit shall be calculated as following:-

Group (A): Valves of size “DN 150”: -

1- Service In.
2- Service Out.
3- Rinse Outlet.
4- Backwash In.
5- Backwash Out.

Assume that the above mentioned valves shall be opened/close two times per day, so
the amount of instrument air required for those valves:-

Air required = 1.5 L x 5.0 valves x 2.0 “No of open/close per day” = 15.0 L/day

Group (B): Valves of size “DN 80”: -

1- Acid Regeneration Inlet.
2- Regeneration Outlet
3- Air Scouring Inlet.

Assume that the above mentioned valves shall be opened/close two times per day, so
the amount of instrument air required for those valves:-

Air required = 1.5 L x 3.0 valves x 2.0 “No of open/close per day” = 9.0 L/day

Page | 11
Water & Environment Technology Company

Group (C): Valves of size “DN 50”: -

1- Caustic Regeneration Inlet.

Assume that the above mentioned valve shall be opened/close two times per day, so
the amount of instrument air required for this valve:-

Air required = 1.1 L x 1.0 valves x 2.0 “No of open/close per day” = 2.2 L/day

So the total “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to operate the valves of each unit:-
15.0 L/day + 9.0 L/day + 2.2 L/day = 26.2 L/day

As there are three mixed bed units in the desalination plant, the “Daily Volume” of
instrument air required for all mixed bed units:-

26.2 L/day x 3 Units = 78.6 L/day “required volume for Mixed Bed Units”.

4.9 Neutralization Pumps Discharge Lines

There are two pneumatic valves at the main discharge lines of the neutralization pumps,
one at the discharge line toward the “South Sea Pit” (Valve No GBR52-AA101) and the
anther at the recirculation line toward the neutralization tank (Valve No GBR52-AA102).

One of the two valves shall be opened at the same time, so if the pneumatic valve at the
recirculation line is opened the anther pneumatic valve shall be closed and vice versa.

It shall be assumed that each of the mentioned two valves shall “Open/Close” three
times a day, accordingly the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required to operate those
valves:-

Air required = 1.5 L x 2.0 valves x 3.0 “No of open/close per day” = 9.0 L/day

4.10 Chemical Dosing Tanks Filling Lines

The filling lines are installed for the dosing tanks of the sulphuric acid and for the caustic
soda only, the purpose of the filling lines is to fill the dosing tanks from the bulk storage
tanks by the unloading pumps. Once any of the chemical dosing tanks for the sulfuric
acid or for the caustic soda reach to the “LL” level, the pneumatic valve at the filling line
will be opened and the related unloading pump will be operated.

There are four sulfuric acid dosing tanks and three caustic soda dosing tanks in the
desalination plant; each tank has a filling line with the its pneumatic valve.

Not all dosing tanks of sulfuric acid and caustic soda shall be filled on daily basis but for
safe calculation for the instrument air requirements of the pneumatic valves It shall be
assumed that each dosing tank shall be filled once a day then each pneumatic valve
shall “Open/Close” once a day, accordingly the “Daily Volume” of instrument air required
to operate those valves:-

Air required = 1.1 L x 7.0 valves x 1.0 “No of open/close per day” = 7.7 L/day

Page | 14
Water & Environment Technology Company

4.11 Total Instrument Air Required

As a result, the total instrument air required for all pneumatic valves in the desalination
plant is the summation of for the daily amount of air for the pneumatic valves that are
calculated through pervious sections (4.1 to 4.10) which equal to “795.3 L/day”.

The estimated total instrument air quantity should be multiplied by 1.3 as a safety factor
considered for uncertainty in the given data and to allow the installation of additional
instruments.

Accordingly, the required total instrument air for the desalination plant:-

795.3 x 1.3 = 1034 L / day
