INTRODUCTION
Generally, productivity is defined as the average direct labor hours required installing a unit
of material. It is said that perfect productivity (1.0) can be achieved with a 40-hour workweek.
(Rowlinson and Proctor, 1999). There are many factors affecting productivity in the
construction some of these are time, schedule compression, materials/tools, motivation etc.
The major factor that affects the productivity of a worker is their safety.
In the construction industry, improvement of productivity and safety on high risks works
like scaffolding works are major concerns. There is a lack of information that focuses on
safety and productivity of scaffold based workers. To evaluate how to implement credible
control solutions on increasing productivity in scaffold based works, a correlation between
safety and productivity has been used. The connection between workplace safety programs
and worker productivity is gaining strength. An increase in the productivity of the
construction sector should not only raise the earnings and profits of those working in that
sector but also contribute to an improvement of the productivity in other sectors, thereby
improving general standards of living.
This is one approach to mitigate risk in construction projects that use scaffoldings.
Achieving better results in improving productivity and safety of scaffold-based workers, this
study incorporated interviews and survey questionnaire to actual workers in Manila,
Philippines.
Nowadays most construction companies value productivity over safety and they do indeed
follow safety procedures, but when the deadline is near they tend to disregard the safety
processes due to the lack of time management and other factors, without realizing that there is
actually connection between the two.
Hypothesis
The study aims to prove of absolute positive rel ationship between worker’s
productivity and their assurance to safety on scaffold-based construction activities.
Our aim is to provide an equation that would proof that there is relationship between safety
and productivity in order to give knowledge to the construction companies the importance of
safety in construction sites.
The results of this study shall continue to the improvement of safety procedures and safety
equipment in small or big scaffolded-based construction works in the industry thus providing
construction workers more confidence in their scaffolded-based work environment and
simultaneously increasing their productivity output.
The benefit will not only cover the construction laborers productivity and output but also the
engineers in-charge of supervising scaffolded based works and companies with big or small
projects.
The companies investing more in safety of scaffolded-based work shall experience an
increase in profit for the target schedules of scaffolded-based work will be finished on or
before deadline.
