or give him or her, the feeling of being present in a distant location in the real world. The illusion is
created through the use of a headset that contains a pair of tiny television tubes and special optics.
When the person puts on the headset, he or she cannot see the outside world and is part of a three-
dimensional setting that is completely enveloping.
Virtual reality is already an important tool for creating models that allow researchers, scientist
and engineers to interact virtually to solve problems and see others. By the 21st century virtual reality
will be an accepted part of home entertainment that will let people step into their fantasy worlds. It
will also have an important role to play in education and training by enabling students to learn by
doing.
