Abstract

To know the benefits of classical music the researchers conducted a voluntary survey

consisting of three types of question: the dichotomous-type, the multiple choice, and rating or

scaling which lead the researchers to answer the specific problem. Classical music is somehow

important in the cognitive development of a human nature along with that it rigidly improves the

spatial reasoning of a person. The whole study was done at Holy Nazarene Christian School and

targeted 5 participants by the means of simple random sampling and found out the pros and cons

of classical music. The 50 random respondents was test according to their idea about what music

specifically classical music is. The most common sought benefits of classical music according to

the scaling (a part of the survey) was it empowers the brain by which it exercises the brain activity

of a person. Along with that it boosts memory that somehow it can be use in the academic

inclination of a person. Behind these benefits students, the respondents, didn’t recognize mostly

the benefits of classical music in terms of the productivity thus the classical music is not significant

in terms of productivity.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Background of the Study

Classical Music is a type of music which it has its own unique harmony, rhythm and tempo.

The melodious tune and made up contrasting melodic figures and rhythms made classical music a

refinement for brain and improves the neuro activity. The classical styles for this genre has a much

clearer and lighter texture than other kind of music thus listening to classical music is the best way

to maintain and comfortable feelings for the audience and for the students.

As the global modernization and technology arises classical music the recognition of

classical music is rapidly decreasing. Students nowadays didn’t know what classical music

abruptly they didn’t know how it works in their cognitive skills and critical thinking, how

beneficial it is in the field of health, and how it’ll improve their self-esteem and how this kind or

genre of music affects their academic performance.

Classical Music is defined as it is essential for the neuroscience and for the brain

technology. Music is a potential method of therapy and a means of accessing and stimulating

specific cerebral circuits (Trimble &Hesdorffer, 2017). Musical creativity and psychopathology

had a brief association towards each other.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The researcher, came up for this kind of problem as it is specifically we want to prove how

and what is the common benefits of classical music. The researcher, want to improvise classical

music as it is helpful to the academic performance of students. Commonly, students nowadays

they didn’t make time to review or study because of the distraction commonly known as social

media. The rapid decreasing of recognition of classical music made the researcher came up with

these following problem statement listed below;

1. Classical Music aren’t recognized nowadays thus the students today don’t know how will

they benefit to this kind of music

1.1 Non-existence of academical and non-academical instruments affect student’s poor

performance.

2. Productivity level when listening to classical music.

3. Classical music serves as distraction to students when studying.

1.3 Theoretical Framework

The concept, ‘Mozart Effect’ coined by Dr. Alfred Tomatis (1991) viewed that listening to

Mozart harmonious music that was presented on different frequencies help the ear, and promote

healing, and the development and the progress of the brain. According to Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky

(1993) inferred that listening to Mozart’s classical music had a effect on the cognitive

development and spatial reasoning oneself later then published it to a certain book called Nature.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The researchers aim to identify the benefits of classical music to the academic performance

of the Grade 11 students of Holy Nazarene Christian School. As we gather information and found

out that it is really effective, the following individuals will be benefited:

The students, after knowing the results of the study and finding out that Classical music

can affect their academic performance and increase their productivity level, they will now use,

support and appreciate classical music to their study. Allowing classical music in part of their

cognitive skills would help students to integrate and develop their brain processing in a way that

it will lead them to awareness that classical music is important and beneficial in different field of

their psychological need.

The teachers, by knowing the results of the study they can also get new information and

formulate new techniques to help their students to improve their academic performances and

increase their productivity level. And this kind of non-academic instrument will may be used as

one of their visual aid or strategy when teaching or discussing something for the improvement in

different field of their students.

Future Researchers, this study may serve as their guide, especially those who will look

into topics regarding the Benefits of Classical Music to the Academic Performance of the students.

This research study aims to provide every researchers as one of their source and helps them in a

way that it will gave them a better topic in the near future.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

This research as conducted to determine the benefits of classical music in the academic

performance at the Holy Nazarene Christian School as perceived by the Grade 11 students during

the school year of 2018-2019. The aspects looked into were students can enhance the learning and

recognize the classical music while they are studying. It is conducted within the Holy Nazarene

Christian School premises only as other school is not associated with our research. Specifically,

the target respondents are from different section and strand of Grade 11 only any other grade levels

are not allowed to take the survey as follow to the research title. The conducted survey was done

for the school year 2018-2019 and the duration of the whole research process was done for almost

two months and survey was done for a day only. By the means of simple random sampling, the

researchers have chosen and limit only to 50 respondents and as the specific problem and topic

(see 1.2) want to answer.

1.6 Assumption of the Study

This research aims to identify the benefits of Classical Music in the Academic performance

of the students. The researchers will gather data to fifty (50) students in Grade 11 of Holy Nazarene

Christian School by letting the students answer questionnaires which compose of dichotomous-

type of survey, multiple choice questionnaire, and scaling. The data will be gathered within one

day. The data will be interpreted by tallying the answers we gathered.

The researchers assume that the study will show how students recognized how beneficiary

Classical Music is, show the rate of productivity level of the students when listening to this kind

of music and will show that Classical music doesn’t serves as a distraction to the students when

studying.

This study is conducted based on the following assumptions:

1. Classical music is still recognizable nowadays.

2. Gain productivity level when listening to classical music.

3. Classical music maintains the focus of the students when they are studying.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Classical Music- a tricky genre, mainly because to the uninformed everything before jazz sounds

like it! Indeed, Classical music and Baroque music both use orchestras to produce their distinctive

sounds, but the way in which each does it is truly different. For example, Baroque music is very

heavy, whereas Classical music is light, almost airy.

Harmony- the structure of music with respect to the composition and progression of chords

Rhythm- the aspect of music comprising all the elements (such as accent, meter, and tempo)

that relate to forward movement

Tempo- the rate of speed of a musical piece or passage indicated by one of a series of directions

(such as largo, presto, or allegro) and often by an exact metronome marking

Neuroscience- a multidisciplinary science that is concerned with the study of the structure and

function of the nervous system. It encompasses the evolution, development, cellular and

molecular biology, physiology, anatomy and pharmacology of the nervous system, as well as

computational, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience.

Psychopathology- a term which refers to either the study of mental illness or mental distress or the

manifestation of behaviors and experiences which may be indicative of mental illness or

psychological impairment.

Cognitive development- the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem

solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood.

Spatial reasoning- a category of reasoning skills that refers to the capacity to think about objects

in three dimensions and to draw conclusions about those objects from limited information.

2.1 Local Literature

The Effect of Classical Music While Reviewing

Acupicop Bati, Balane,et.al. (October 2017)
In this study, the researchers attempted to find out the significant effect of Classical music

on the learning while reviewing. The Researchers use between–subjects design with two

independent groups. The subject were obtained from BS-Psychology 1st year using 10 subjects

were randomly assigned to the control group, while 10 subjects were similarly assigned to the

experimental group. The Questionnaire was administered on the subjects using t-test on the data

obtained, a t value of 0.03 yielded at 0.5 level of significance, the critical is 2.101. Because the t-

critical is greater than t-value, the Researchers found no significant differences between the

experimental groups and scores of the control. Therefore, it was concluded that Classical Music

has no significant effect on the listening while reviewing.

A Review on the “Mozart Effect Phenomenon” Related Studies and Conclusions

Ms. Shedy Dee C. Mallari and Prof. Jose Maria G. Pelayo III (April 2015)

Many research studies seek and concluded that listening to Mozart’s music may improve

short-term performance of spatial-temporal reasoning which is a cognitive skill. Multiple

hypotheses of those researchers who conducted experiments about Classical music also suggested

that it would have beneficial effects on mental development when they are exposed on classical

music during early childhood. Rauscher (1993) claimed that Mozart’s music, specifically the song

“Sonata for Two Pianos” (K448) for 10 minutes improved spatial temporal skills compared to

relaxation music made to lower blood pressure or even silence. This study focused on different

research studies that will strengthen the “Mozart Effect Phenomenon” and its’ efficiency in

cognitive development and will also claim that the phenomenon is false by showing contradicting

studies. This review tackled numerous research studies conducted on the phenomena.

Effects of Music on the Spatial Reasoning Skills of Grade-One Pupils

Castillo,San Juan, Tajanlangit, Ereño, Serino and Tayo (2014)

The study determined the significant effect of different types of music on the spatial reasoning

skills of children aging from 6-8 years old. Twenty-one (21) grade one students (13 males, 8

females) of Colegio de San Juan de Letran were selected to complete jigsaw puzzle to assess their

spatial reasoning skills while exposed to two different conditions: Instrumental Music (Binaural

Beats) and Nursery Rhymes (Old McDonald’s), respectively. The results were all calculated using

Wilcoxon’s Matched-Pairs Signed Rank Test. Findings imply that nursery rhymes stimulate the

brain’s processing of organizing images more effectively than that of instrumental music. Children

ranging from 6-8 years old are more likely to perform better on a spatial reasoning task when they

are listening to fast-beat nursery rhymes than that of instrumental music; thereby enhancing their

spatial reasoning skills. Limitations and suggestions for further studies were discussed.

The aim of this final thesis is to explain and justify how early music training can be considered

an additional educational instrument that will prepare the grade for a better learning improvement

and human aesthetic-scientific balance development. It conducts a qualitative research approach

based on most relevant literature review about neuroscience, music and education applies an

integrative, interdisciplinary and clitical reflection to present and to justify beautiful perks of early

music training instruction. The notable advances on neuroscience findings related music and/or

education were taken in special consideration such as those concerned with the concepts of

neuroplasticity, sensible periods, nature and nurture on brain development., transfer of learning

the dissertation is concentrated on music training. Music training is about leaning and practicing a

musical instrument, based on musical theories, notation, tactics, and cultural and mental

surroundings. Other delimitation on the scope of the research refers to the functional uses of music

on therapy or clinical rehabilitation, which are not accepted in this dissertation despite their

relevant and confirmed social and medical perks. The singular life experience of the author, as a

pianist, musical educator and a master student on education, describe the affective and motivation

by the nature of thematic proposed, which also allows her to be more insightful on exposing result,

concept, opinions and reflections when doing the interdisciplinary, integrative and critical

literature overview included on discussion and conclusions. The dissertation might contribute to

the dissemination of the neuroscience findings on music training and its implications for education

and lifelong learning. Future study should gain more bridges between music, neuroscience and

education to strengthen the important field of educational neuroscience and need to include

musical education in the school curriculum.

Recent research effort examine the effects on the brain of listening to classical music have

discovered that it can improve the cognitive and learning capacity. The recent study shows that

the music of W. A Mozart and J. S Batch has a notable role not only in cognitive disturbance, but

also a treatment for some diseases and several syndrome, either by rehabilitating or by stimulating

cerebral synaptic plasticity. It was 1993 when Mozart Effect was described for the first time.

Afterwards, other studies regarding that are made. This review summarizes the recent scientific

literature on the Mozart effect. More studies are require in order to define specific protocols in

which music can really helps clinicians in recovering patients and improving their life quality.

This study aim to investigate the effect of Mozart's music on the brain activity through

spectral analysis of the EGG in young healthy adults and in elderly with Mild Cognitive

Impairment (MCI). EGG recording was successfully performed at basal rest conditions and after

listening to Mozart's K448 or "Fur Elise" Beethoven's sonatas. An increase of alpha band and

meridian Frequency index of background alpha rhythm activity ( pattern of brain wave activity

linked to memory, cognition and open mind to problem solving) was observed both in adults and

in elderly after listening to Mozart music. There are no changes observed in MCI and EGG, after

listening to Beethoven, This result may be representative of the fact said Mozart's music is able to

"activate" neuronal cortical circuits related to attentive and cognitive functions.

This study aims to depict and signifies how beneficiary classical music in the academic

performance of the students thus gathering relevant information and data is a must.

3.1 Research Design

In order to show how effective and beneficial classical music in the aspect of academic

activities, performance, and context as perceived by Grade 11 students of Holy Nazarene Christian

School for the school year 2018-2019, the dichotomous-type of survey, multiple choice

questionnaire, and scaling was used to test to know the perspective of the respondents.

As a quasi-experimental type of research, the researchers applied the nonequivalent groups

design by selecting different section or distinctive strand of Grade 11 where all of the

section/strand have similar interest in the topic being discussed, are close in age, and have similar

type of reviewing, studying, and cognitive skills thus taking these steps will increase its internal

validity of the study.

3.2 Variables and Measures

answered based on the true perception and perspective of the respondents who will gonna take the

survey. The formulation of questions are based on the 3 main problems and the sub-problem that

will make the respondents to have the benefits of how classical music works in everyday of their

life.

The first instrument used is the questionnaire, composing of three different types: the

dichotomous that is preferably answerable by yes or no, multiple choice wherein they are oblige

to answer as many as they can, and lastly the scaling by which they were asked to scale 9 from the

most beneficial and 1 for the least beneficial that will solve our research problem respectively.

We formulated 15 questions that is fully understandable, the following listed explanation of

the 15 questions below are bound to answer our research problem and came up with a good

recommendation for the students, teachers, and future researchers.

Question 1

We first ask if the student is listening to any kind of music so that we will know if they know any

kind of genre especially classical music.

Question 2

To know the students awareness about the existence of classical music.

Question 3

We include this questions so that we will know if they are capable to answer the questions

regarding the usage of classical music in their studies.

This question is under the question number 3, it is also one of the most important question. We

included it to know if they get any benefits through listening to classical music.

Question 3.2

Like question 3.1 it is also under the question 3. This question is for those students who don’t listen

to any classical music.

Question 4

This question is to know if there's an improvement in their grade when they started listening to

classical music.

Question 5

To know the number of hours they are studying when they have an examination.

Question 6

This question is included for us to know if the students are listening to classical music while

studying so that we will know how many students nowadays listen to such music when studying.

Question 6.1

This question is under question 6. This question is for those student who aren't listening to classical

music when they are studying. This is also to know if the students will accept our recommendation

regarding classical music as an instrument for studying/ reviewing

Question 7

To know how classical music affects them. To know if such music keep their focus or it distract

them.

Question 8

Question 9

To know their perspective about how beneficial classical music is after knowing the benefits that

classical music can give

Question 10

To know how student sees classical music as more helpful and better than any kind of music

Question 11

To see students perspective about the classical music

Scaling

To know the benefits students get when they are listening to classical music. In this way, we will

know the insight of every students about the least and the most beneficial they have sought in this

topic.

Another type of instrument used during our survey proper was observation in a way in

some section we asked students if they are listening to this kind of music and if they are aware to

this genre so that we observe that classical music gave importance to their life. After observing we

asked them if they can answer the questionnaire properly and efficiently.
