DIRECTIONAL MODULE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

1. Obtain directional module from incoming tool rack.

2. Observe color of tool status tag.
• If red: Follow procedure for failed tool string.
• If yellow and not used: Note serial number and obtain tool file and
directional module work form. Inspect 4 and 6 pin connectors and follow
ring out and functional test procedures.
• If yellow and used: Use following procedure. Note serial number and
obtain tool file, directional module work form, and work summary form.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Clean exterior of tool with scrub pad and lubricant cleanser and wipe with rag.
2. Inspect for wash. Tool to be broken down from uphole to downhole.
3. Remove thread protectors.
4. Remove uphole interconnect housing.
5. Inspect 6 pin connector.
6. Remove 2 screws (4/40 X ¼ allen head) from top bulkhead retainer while holding
it in place. Carefully place end of dowel rod (diameter slightly less than center
hole of bulkhead) against end of 6 pin connector. Slide bulkhead over dowel rod
while holding 6 pin stationary and remove.
7. Remove split shells.
8. Remove uphole intermodule end.
9. Remove downhole interconnect housing.
10. Inspect 4 pin connector. Check corresponding column on directional module
work form.
11. Remove bottom bulkhead retainer. “Same technique as top bulkhead retainer
removal.”
12. Remove split shells.
13. Remove downhole intermodule end (electronics section attached) carefully slide
electronics section out of sensor pressure housing.
14. Remove uphole snubber (4 brass screws 10/32 X 3/8 slotted) and downhole
snubber (4 screws x allen) from electronics section. Inspect screws and replace if
necessary.
MAINTENANCE
1. Inspect snubbers for wear and check corresponding column on directional module
work form.
2. Inspect pigtails and transorb for wear.
3. Clean pins and ensure good torque of connector screws.
4. Clean snubbers.
5. Clean intermodule ends and bulkheads and replace O-rings.
6. Replace blue loctite 4 screws (x allen) that hold snubber to downhole intermodule
end (replace screws and RTV if worn, and ensure good torque.)
7. Inspect electronics section for wear, replace temperature strips if necessary.
Record MPU and power supply serial numbers onto directional module work
form.
8. Remove small section of tape from around MPU and power supply connectors
and ensure good torque of screws. Replace tape. Check corresponding column on
directional module work form.
9. Replace tape around electronics sections, O-rings and measure with 1.5” main
orifice. Orifice should slide over O-rings with a slight amount of resistance. Add
more tape wraps as necessary. Date and initial tape and check corresponding
column on directional module work form.
ASSEMBLY
1. Reassemble snubbers to electronics section using blue loctite and ensure good
torque (brass screws to uphole end). Tape around snubbers. A few wraps around
uphole snubber O-ring using 1.5” main orifice for measurement.
2. Carefully slide electronics section into sensor pressure housing, grease O-rings
and tighten downhole intermodule end.
3. Install split rings holding 4 pin connector stationary.
4. Slide bottom bulkhead retainer (45 degree offset key slot) onto 4 pin connector
and tighten to downhole intermodule end with 2 screws (4/40x1/4 allen) using
blue loctite.
5. Inspect and clean threads on interconnect housing.
6. Grease O-rings and tighten interconnect housing to downhole intermodule end.
7. Draw torque lines and ensure maximum torque.
8. Grease O-rings and tighten uphole intermodule end to sensor pressure housing.
9. Install split rings holding 6 pin connector stationary.
10. Slide top bulkhead retainer (90 degree offset key slot) onto 6 pin connector and
tighten to uphole intermodule end with 2 screws ( 4/40 x ¼ allen) using blue
loctite. Check blue loctite installed column on directional module end.
11. Inspect and clean threads on interconnect housing.
12. Grease O-rings and tighten interconnect housing to uphole intermodule end.
13. Draw torque lines and ensure maximum torque.
RING OUT
1. Connect breakout unit to directional module with all switches in break position.
2. Perform ring out with ohm meter following directional module work form and
record readings. “Note any discrepancies.”
