A. History of the Cooperating School
History of Kalalake National High School

One of the major thrust on community and educational development is to make education
accessible to all by means of establishing a secondary school in every barangay. This was realized
particularly to the people of Barangay New Kalalake when a barangay high school came into existence
which caters to four neighboring barangays namely: New Kalalake, Pag-asa, East Bajac-Bajac and East
Tapinac.

Kalalake National High School previously known as Kalalake Barangay High School was
founded in 1979. The school that time was occupying a portion of the lot owned by the Kalalake
Elementary School and was under the supervision of the elementary school principal Miss Felicidad
Salvador and was under the district supervisor, Dr. Norma Medina. Ms. Salvador and Dr. Medina together
with the PTA president Mr. Arturo Roque and his officers, city councilors of Barangay New Kalalake and
councilmen of the OlongapoCity Mayor Richard J. Gordon were among those people who worked out for
the existence of the school in consonance with the bill passed in Congress by the late Dr. Pedro Orata, one
of the intellectual giants of Philippine Education. Ms. Felicidad Salvador served as its first principal from
1979-1983 while Mr. Nicolas R. Corpuz replaced her from 1984-1989.

A copy of the resolution requesting for a barangay high school was made by the PTA officials
and was later approved by the city council in the same year. The approved resolution was then endorsed
to DECS Division office for approval. From its status as barangay high school, it was converted to a
nationalized high school by the virtue of Executive Order No. 189 in 1987 under DECS Memorandum
No. 5 series 1989. The move to mobilize the development of all barangay high schools was immediately
implemented and the school was provided by the municipal government a separate land adjacent to the
Kalalake Elementary School.

It was clear from the outset that Kalalake National High School is an important educational
institution not only for the people of barangay New kalalake but also to the feeder schools that include
East Bajac-Bajac and AsinanElementary Schools. A copy of the City Ordinance No. 20 series 1980 which
supersede Resolution No 23. Appropriating the amount of P40,000 as aid of the city government to the
barangay high school of Kalalake.

After five years of administration Mr. Corpuz was replaced by Mrs. Rosalina A. Gabrito from
1989-1991, succeeded by Mrs. Helen B. Aggabao from June 1991- Aug. 1997. It was during the time of
Mrs. Aggabao where computer literacy was introduced. KHS first offered Computer Literacy training
Program first to the teachers then to the students it was also the time that she organized the different
subject areas into departments and stablished the organizational chart and its functions. In September
1997 – 2000 Mr. Nicolas R. Corpuz came back to the school as principal II, then he retired in 2000. Mrs.
Carmelita De Guzman replaced him from 2000-2003. In her time the school won in different math and
sports competitions. Mrs. De Guzman retired in 2003. A new principal came in the person of Mrs.
Esterlina E. Bernales in 2003 – 2006. In 2005 Congresswoman Mitos Magsaysay donated 2 storey
building with 6 classrooms . Dr. Roger L. Nuqui, Division Supervisor in mathematics served as an OIC
principal of the school from 2006-2008. Mr. Leonardo P. De Guzman installed as principal IV from 2008-
Oct. 2012.

Due to changes in 2003, such as changing Department of Education, Culture and Sport (DECS)
to Department of Education(DepEd), Kalalake High School is renamed into Kalalake National High
School. The school became autonomous secondary school and it was during the time of Mr. De Guzman
in 2010 the full autonomy of the school was implemented. Mr. De Guzman created new items a Head
Teacher position and was approved in January 2012. His community linkages was at par, he has a nose
for stakeholders. He puts extra emphasis on the improvement of physical facilities of the school.
Administration followed by Mr. Ricardo B. Aggabao, principal IV from Oct. 2012 to present. The current
school head is continuing the legacy of his predecessors.

2007 was a very fruitful year for the school, as it continued to garner awards in ICT Festival and
became the Division Overall Champion. In the succeeding years from 2008-2011 the school won the
Division to Regional speech choir competition and championed in the Division English Olympics. Dr.
Nuqui placed the school on a limelight since he pushed through all academic areas. Majority of academic
areas were given recognition in different competitions. Beauty and Brains Competition was so popular.
And the school candidates in the Division Campus King and Queen topped the Grand Finals, They ranked
4rth and 5th places.

From its brilliant faculty and administration staff to the lively students it supports every day, the
continually envelops everyone under it with the atmosphere and confidence, perseverance. As every day
passes, each individual discovers his talents and abilities and learns to develop his self-confidence, and as
the school’s encouraging hand continues to bring out the best in them.
Let us watch out for it tomorrow, for it will surely burst forth, shining a light that would guide the
students to success.

II. Narrative Summary
A. Observation Phase

Activity 1: Knowing Myself and My Philosophy in Teaching

A skillful educator understands the importance of building a support network for students
between school and home, and may have to be the first to initiate that teamwork. She must create a
welcoming, safe classroom atmosphere that is accessible to all students and that celebrates their diversity.
She must conduct herself with professionalism and consistency and share her enthusiasm and passion for
learning with her students each day. She must be dedicated to lifelong learning and desire to make
contributions to her team of colleagues and to the field of education.

My philosophy in teaching is based on what I know and have experienced at this point in my
career. I am sure that my teaching philosophy will change as I learn more as a young professional. That’s
one of the gifts of being human; we can make mistakes, or learn something new, and make a change for
the better. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

Activity 2-A: Teacher’s Craftsmanship

All teachers want to offer good instruction and to help their students do well. Every teacher has
their own style of teaching. As I was observing Ma’am Villamento I saw that she makes sure that her
students will go out in school with a set of knowledge every day. She’s a friend and a mother to her
students. She relates the lesson to real life situations that everybody’s experiencing. Sometimes to catch
her student’s attention, she would tell a story about what she has watched the previous night. She knew
that her students also watched that show in the television that’s why when she began to tell a story almost
all of her students were actively sharing their thoughts about the show the she was telling.

My cooperating teacher uses instructional materials like manila papers and television, because it
is also effective to teach with the help of instructional materials. I am impressed with her because she
knows how to deal with her students; she knows how to get along with them that’s why every time they
see Ma’am Villamento outside the classroom they greet her as if they did not see each other for years.

Activity 2-B: Teacher’s Personality

At first I thought that I will not like my cooperating teacher because I thought that she was ill-
tempered but that has fades away when we first talked in the classroom. She was pregnant that time when
I was still her observer. With the way she talks, it seems like she was talking to a child because her voice
was so mild. In terms of teaching inside the class her voice was moderate that even if you are seated at the
back of the classroom you will still hear her voice.

She is a considerate teacher because she considers the situations of her students, because in the
first place she knows what the problem of her students is. That thing that I like about her, she doesn’t
hesitate to listen to her student’s problem and what was bothering them. Even with me, she was willing to
listen about my problems and she gives some advices. She is a kind person, a good friend to her students,
and a good mother.

Activity 3-A: Student’s Personality

We believe that personality traits are a combination of characteristics that are innate to us as
individuals. Students have a different personality with different characteristics. Some of them are
naughty, shy type, talkative and some are importunate. The first time that I met them when I was an
observer, I already knew that some of them will be such a headache inside the class so I must be ready.
Most of the students that I was handling was industrious and very polite is because they are honor
students. But still, there are also some students who are very polite even though they are not honor
students. I encountered some students who think that they are smarter than their teachers.

There were also students who are very lazy, even I lost my patience sometimes because of their
laziness I still didn’t give up on them, because I am there to help them and guide them. I always remind
myself that do not give up.

Activity 3-B Student’s Socio-Economic Profile

It is important that a teacher knows the profile of her students because if something happens to
one of her students she will know whose person she will contact. As I said earlier, my cooperating teacher
knows about the background of her students. Most of them are living with their parents and few of them
are just living with their relative. They are also financially supported by their parents in terms of
education and other expenses.

Activity 4-A: Classroom Management

Classroom management is very important; a teacher cannot start his/her class without a classroom
management. Ma’am Villamento always starts her class by greeting her students and assigning a person to
lead the prayer, after that she will ask the students to arrange their chairs and pick up the pieces of papers
that are scattered inside the class.

That’s why I keep on reminding my students that before the class starts it is important that the
classroom is always clean till the class ends. It is comfortable to teach and learn inside a class with a
conducive atmosphere.

Activity 4-B: Seat Plan

The seats of the students are arranged according to how their adviser arranged it, but I asked my
cooperating teacher if can I change the seats of the student in my class and she said yes. So I arranged the
seat of my students in an alternating manner according to their sex. I personally assigned them on their
designated seats.

Activity 5-A: Lesson Planning

Lesson planning is very important because it helps the teacher in maintaining a standard teaching
pattern and does not let the class deviate from the topic.

My cooperating teacher does her lesson plan the day before the deadline because they submit the
lesson plan for the week every Monday. She always prepares her lesson plan at home and finishes it
before the deadline comes. It is important that the lesson plans are well-prepared because it is the guide of
every teacher in teaching.

Activity 6: Art of Questioning

People begin asking questions almost as early as they begin to speak. Questions solicit
information for the purpose of understanding something. Everyday questions are different from the
questions effective teachers ask, because effective teachers formulate questions with an eye to increasing
someone else's understanding. Questions designed to drill for rote answers require little art, but questions
that help teach students how to think are like a dance between the teacher and student.

Every time that teacher teaches their students, asking questions becomes relevant because every
question is the basis of the teacher if the students are listening and if they understand the lesson.

Ma’am Villamento asks her students from difficult to easier questions; she will try to ask her
student’s questions that are difficult to answer, to know if the students understood the lesson. But if the
students don’t analyze the question it will be hard for them to answer the question, that’s why she will
rephrase the questions until the students can answer it.

Activity 7: Instructional Materials

Instructional materials refer to the human and non-human materials and facilities that can be used
to ease, encourage, improve and promote teaching and learning activities. They are
whatever materials used in the process of instruction. Videos, Music, Visual Aids including pictures are
instructional materials that help both the teacher and the students to teach and understand the lesson,
respectively.

Ma’am Villamento uses manila paper, pictures and most of the time she uses television so that
will not be that hard for the students to visualize the topic that they are tackling.

Activity 8: Assignments
Assignments are a holistic way to ensure that students take up an effective reading and practical
application of knowledge while they are not in the school, assignments direct the students to go through
different books, articles, and journals of the subject matter and gain sufficient secondary knowledge to
develop their own thought process.

She always gives an assignment to her students and the students write it in their journal. Ma’am
Villamento will check their journal to know if they do their assignments. The assignments that she gives
are about the next topic for the next day. It serves as a review to the topic that they going to tackle.

Activity 9: Testing and Grading

Students tend to concentrate their time in preparation for an exam, and they intended this effort in
anticipation of the nature of the questions they will be asked. If students anticipate the need to know
unassimilated facts, they will concentrate on memorizing information. Although test scores in any setting
are affected by students' aptitude, study skills, motivation, background preparation, and the influence of
the teacher, our classroom examinations should be designed primarily to measure subject-matter
achievement.

My cooperating teacher uses performance task and quizzes to measure what the students learn
from their lesson. In using performance tasks she makes use of criteria in giving score in every
performance. She always considers the effort of her students.

Activity 10: Co-Curricular and Extra Curricular

As I said a while ago, my cooperating teacher is very considerate because she gives chance to
those students who compete outside the school for the benefits of their school. When there is an activity
in their department she engages her students to compete and she will give some incentives to those
students who will join the activity.

When there is an activity inside the school, I also encourage the students to join or watch the activity.
I also participate in those activities.

B. Participation and Teaching Phase

1. Working with the Students

Actually I was very excited and a bit nervous to teach because I am handling two different grade
levels with different lessons which are Grades 9 and 10. At first I don’t know what I will do if the
students won’t listen to me while I am teaching. But that didn’t happen; I was actually a bit shocked
because the students were so quiet, because some of them were afraid of me. Most of them answer my
question when I call their names. Some of them are cooperative and some of them are not. There are
times that one of my students posted my picture on My Day asking why I don’t even smile, but my face
there was blurred. Some of them are whispering saying that I don’t even smile. Ma’am Villamento
noticed it that’s why she told me to smile sometimes. I laughed at the back of my mind when she said that
because I know why she asked me to smile sometimes. But I just did what I am doing in past days. I
always enter in my class with a serious face for 2 weeks. After that I entered the class with a smile and I
made jokes with the students. Some of them are shocked and some of them sent me a message on
Facebook telling me that they thought I was ill-tempered and telling me that my strategy was good in
calling names of students unexpectedly for recitation. They got shocked when I called their names
because sometimes they didn’t expect that I will call them. One of the sections that I was handling doesn’t
like me so much it was because they are afraid of me and because I always gave them lots of assignments.
I am giving them lots of assignments because it was my cooperating teacher’s suggestion and I also gave
it because of their laziness. The assignments that I’ve given them served as their recitation. That’s why
almost all of them are forced to do their assignments because I call their names one by one. But in the end
the section that doesn’t like me at first are the ones that became closed to me.

All in all, I enjoyed working with them I enjoy teaching them and I enjoy helping and guiding them. I
miss talking and making jokes with them.

2. Working with the Cooperating Teacher

I really like my cooperating teacher even though at first I was worried because I am her first
student teacher. But because we are helping each other I don’t feel too much pressure, especially when
the day that I first taught the students that she was handling. During our break time we keep on talking
about the students, how they participate and how they are inside the classroom. We also talked about
being a mother and I was so happy that were both enjoying the stage of being a mother. We also talk
about our babies and we are happy that our babies our keep on growing. Ma’am Villamento is a very kind
person, a good teacher and a loving mother. She cheered me up during my final demo.
3. Working with the Department Head
Mrs. Vidad is very approachable, she always greets back every time I greet her. Sometimes when
we met along the way she was asking me if I’m alright and how teaching was, she always says that I
should just focus on the children and stay calm even though they are being naughty.

I was glad when she observed me before the final demo comes, she gave some advices and
reminders that I kept on my mind.

4. Working with the Principal

I am thankful because Mr. Ricardo Aggabao is very accommodating and a down to earth person.
At first I didn’t recognize that he is the principal because he wears simple clothes and also he was helping
to clean the school grounds. It was good to see that the principal was always at school and checks what is
going on inside the campus. He always greets back every time I greet him and he always has a smile on
his face. I am glad to work with Mr. Aggabao because he is very nice to everyone.

C. Transition, Observation and Reflection Phase

1. Compilation of Weekly Journal

Week 1

This is the first week of going back to school of the students, but most of them are still on
vacation because some of them are still absent. Most of the sections that I am going to handle only had
few students.

Because they are not yet done with the lesson for the 3rd grading, they just continued to tackle the
topics that are left because the following days are the periodical exam of the students.

Week 2

It was the 2nd week since the class resumed, and for this week they watched a movie related to
their last topic for the 3rd grading, a movie trailer. While they were watching I was explaining what is
happening on the movie because it was in Indian language and it doesn’t have a subtitle. The past days
they had a reflection on what they have watched.

Week3

This week I finally handled the students of Ma’am Villamento. This is also the week when I
formally introduced myself to the students. I also introduced to them the lessons that are going to finish
until the 4th periodical exam. The first lesson that we tackled was all about Dr. Jose Rizal. I gave them an
activity that I caught their attention.
I also tackled the life of Rizal, his parents and siblings. I started the formal lesson with an activity
so that the class will be lively. As we expected in every class, few of the students were not listening so I
called their attention for them to know that they have to listen.

Week 4

We tackled the masterpiece of Dr. Rizal, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. I am handling
different year levels, Grades 9 and 10 with different sections that’s why I saw the difference between the
sections of same grade that I handle.

The topics for this week were all well done.

Week 5

We tackled the characters in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. We identified the characters
one by one so they can recognize each of them, since all of the characters will be discussed in every
chapter. The students are enjoyed identifying characters because of the pictures.

There are students who were willing to learn and there were also students that you need to give
more patience to.

Week 6

For this week we just continued tacklers every chapter of Noli Me Tangere. Sometimes we are
tackling 3-5 chapters because we can’t finish the 64 chapters if we tackle it one by one. In El
Filibusterismo it is okay to tackle it 1 by 1 because it was only 39 chapters. It was a little bit hard for the
students to understand the two masterpieces of Rizal but I did all that I can to make it for them to
understand.

Week 7

I gave every student a chapter that they are going to report, so that they will understand it and
they can read it at home.

Every day there is a reporter who was assigned to report the chapter that I have given them. They
explained the characters, contents and the thoughts in every chapter.

Week 8

This week we still continued tackling every chapter of the two literary compositions of Rizal. For
each chapter I gave an activity. Some of the students did every activity that I gave and some of them
always pass their activity late, they are catching up to pass the activity. I gave them deadlines and I
reminded them that I will not accept late passers.

Week9

We still continued tackling the chapters of the two compositions of Rizal. Few chapters were left
until we are done.

At the same time I was also preparing for our final demo I was very nervous and stressed because
I don’t know what I will do first because I have so many problems at that time. Even though I have lots of
problems I still made sure that it won’t affect my teaching.
Week 10

At last the day of the final demo came and it was already done so I can breathe properly
now. The pressures are gone. When the next day came I continued to tackle the chapters that
were left. I also reminded them every day about the project that I asked them to do. I asked them
to do their own comics strips of Noli Me Tangere for Grade 9 and El Filibusterismo for Grade
10.

Week 11

The remaining weeks are the weeks in where Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo of
Rizal are going to end soon. Only few days left and the lesson for the 4 th grading are finally
done. I will miss my students though even most of them are being naughty inside the class. Also
this week, my students started passing their projects.

Week 12

Before the day of the exam I gave my students a long quiz as a review for the upcoming
th
4 periodical exam. When the periodical exam came I stayed in the faculty room because my
cooperating teacher doesn’t have an advisory class that’s why I only waited for the test papers of
my students so I can check it already. March 20 the last day of examination was also the last day
of passing their projects.

BALIK ARAL: Kabanata 9 Si Pilato

maaaring magsalita.

Naunawaan ba? Opo.

May mga katanungan ? Wala na po

Mabuti, ipapangkat ko kayo sa tatlo.

Bumilang ng isa hanggang tatlo.
Simulan mo Hanna. Isa, dalawa, tatlo
(Magbibilang ang mga mag-aaral ng isa
hanggang tatlo bawat isa.)

upuan.Gawin ito ng tahimik.
(Magsisimulang bumilang ang guro.) Ipapangkat ng mga mag-aaral ang kanilang
sarili at magtutungo sa upuang nakatalaga sa
kanila.

PANUTO:
Mayroon ako ritong iba’t-ibang
kategorya na may kinalaman sa
kabanatang ating tatalakayin mamaya.
Ang ating unang kategorya ay tao,
kasunod ay bagay at panghuli ay mga
pangyayari.Magtalaga kayo ng isang tao
na bubunot dito sa kahon para sa
kategoryang inyong ilalarawan at
huhulaan. Kapag nasagutan ninyo ang
inilalarawan ng aktor na itinalaga ninyo
ay maaari na syang umupo at tatayo
naman ang isa sa inyo para ipagpatuloy
ang paglalarawan ng panibagong salita
o mga salitang mabubunot niya sa
kahong inihanda ko.
Mayroon lamang kayong tig-
dadalawang minuto bawat pangkat, para
maisagawa ang laro. Ang pangkat na
magkakamit ng pinakamaraming bilang
ng mahuhulaan ay siyang magkakamit
ng 10 puntos bawat isa.
Bawal magsalita o sumagot ang
dalawang pangkat habang naglalaro ang
unang pangkat. Bibigyan ko lamang ang
bawat pangkat ng tig-dadalawang
minuto.

Naunawaan? Opo.
Mauunang maglaro ang unang pangkat.
Tumayo na ang unang magiging aktor at

Pabubunutin na ng guro sa kahon ang
unang maglalarawan. (Bubunot ang mag-aaral at magsisimulang
maglarawan sa pamamagitan ng paggalaw o
pagkilos ng katawan.)

kabanatang ating tatalakayin.
Kanina isa sa mga hinulaan ninyo ang
mga tauhan na makikita o mababasa sa
kabanata 10 na ating tatalakayin

(Pagkatapos ng pag-uulat)

Mahusay Jona at Erna!Salamat sa inyong

dalawa, maari na kayong umupo.

Naunawaan ba ang kabanatang tinalakay ni

Jona at Erna?
Opo!

Sige, kung naunawaan talaga. Ano muli ang

Maam, ang mga nangyari po doon ay,
nangyari sa kabanata?
dumating po si Simoun sa tahanan ni
Iha?
doon sina Hermana Penchang, Sinang, at
Kapitana Tika.

Opo

May katanungan? O may nais bigyang linaw? Wala na po.

Kung wala na, magkakaroon tayo ng pang

susunod na kabanata na tatalakayin natin bukas.

Actually I spend more money in this last semester of being a graduating student or a student
teacher neither. Some materials in teaching and some things that are needed in the school were
sometimes costly that why sometimes I got out of budget. But even though I spend too much in my
studying I know that it was worth it.
