ASPECT OF CULTURE IN AN THUYÊN’S MUSIC

For the Vietnamese, music is considered to be an essential need; therefore,

numerous musical instruments and genres intended for various purposes have been

developed. Vietnamese people use music to express their innermost feelings, to

encourage themselves while working and fighting, to educate their children in good

traditions and national sentiment, to communicate with the invisible, and to

sublimate their aspirations for a happy life. Music has always been a source of

happiness to all men on the Earth. Music comes in human souls through its melody

and lyrics. Definitely, each of us understands the humanitarian meaning undergoing

these song titles, even when we have not heard their lyrics yet.

Life seems to be a colorful painting adorned with the complicated and copious net

of human’s sentiments: happiness, sadness, meditation, recall, etc. Literarily

speaking, song titles are the crystallization of four items: lyrics, melody, emotion

and experience. When composing a song, the musician must think of the title he

names to his mental product so that the title accumulates all of those crystals.

Vietnam’s musical heritage is so rich and diverse that each region- North, Central,

and South- produces a unique music of its own. Music presents traditional folk songs

from each region, showcasing the music that singer An Thuyen discovered. The

songs are sung by professional vocalists, each representing their native region of
Vietnam. An Thuyen was given the State Award for Literature and Art in 2007. He

was born in 1949 in the central province of Nghe An, he started playing a couple of

instruments, including the traditional bamboo flute at the age of 11, and was the key

member of his family music troupe. An Thuyen joined the army in 1975 and became

a musician in Military Zone 5’s troupe two years later. In 1981 he enrolled in the

Hanoi Conservatory of Music, the present-day Vietnam National Academy of

Music. After his graduation, he worked for the Military University of Culture and

Art until he retired. “The music of An Thuyen is like his own personality, which is

always plain and natural,” said singer Trong Tan, who had worked with the late

musician for years. Folk music of Nghe An and Ha Tinh is what characterizes many

of Thuyen’s songs such as “Ca dao em va toi” (The folk song of you and me), “Em

chon loi nay” (I choose this way), and “Tho tinh cua nui” (Love poem of the

mountain). An Thuyen’s childhood was linked with the folk songs and chants of his

home province. He could play many kinds of traditional Vietnamese instruments

when he was 11. In his 20s, he wrote two of his favorite songs, which made a name

for him: “I choose this way” and “Remembering Uncle Ho while listening to chants

on the boat at night”. Many of his songs are popular across generations, like

“Beloved Hue”, “Folk song, You and Me”, “Heroic Vietnamese Mothers”, and

“Marching to the Northeast”. He also wrote a number of famous operas such as Kim

Chi, A pair of chopsticks made of Kim giao wood, Sea of bitter love, and the rise of
the nation. He said “I grew up in the flow of folk music and I extract its quintessence

to make my works modern, but full of folk rhythm.” That explains why his works

often depict Vietnam’s peaceful countryside with images of the river, the wharf, and

the boat. Musician Duc Trinh, Dean of the Military University of Culture and Arts,

has been Thuyen’s colleague for years. He said:”Thuyen’s songs are easy to

remember because their lyrics and melodies are blended with traditional folk songs.

His works are both academic and emotional. He died at the age of 65 but he will

always be remembered as a talented musician and general of the Vietnam People’s

Army. Major General of An Thuyen was a renowned musician, who had a great love

for his home province of Nghe An. He helped to train many influential musicians

and artists in Vietnam.
