Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section

1. The function 𝑓 is defined by

1
f: 𝑥 → √3𝑥 + 1 , 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 𝑥 ≥ − 3

Find f −1 and state its domain and range. [4 marks]

2. 2
(a) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = |1 − 3𝑥|, and the graph 𝑦 = 𝑥 , 𝑥 ≠ 0 on the same
coordinate system.
2
Solve the inequality |1 − 3𝑥| ≥ 𝑥 . [5 marks]

(b) Solve the equation sin 2𝑥 = 3 cos2 𝑥, giving all solutions between 0 and
360 correct to the nearest 0.1. [6 marks]

3. −3 −1 6
Given that 𝑨 = ( 2 1 −4).
−5 −2 11
By using elementary row operations, find the inverse of A. [5 marks]
Hence, solve the system of linear equations,
−3𝑥 − 𝑦 + 6𝑧 = −2
2𝑥 + 𝑦 − 4𝑧 = 2
−5𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 11𝑧 = −5
[4 marks]
4. 1 1 1
[3 marks]
Given that 𝑩 = ( 1 −1 2)
𝑚 4 1

Find the value of 𝑚 if 𝑩−1 does not exist.

5. 1
(a) The nth term of a series is given by 𝑈𝑛 = 2 (3𝑛 + 5). Show that the series
[3 marks]
is an arithmetic series.

(b) Determine the smallest integer n such that

4 4 2 4 3 4 𝑛
1 + + ( ) + ( ) + ⋯ + ( ) > 21 [5marks]
3 3 3 3

1
(c) Expand (1 + 3𝑥)3 in ascending powers of 𝑥 until the term in 𝑥 3 .
1 3
By taking 𝑥 = 8 , find the approximate value for √5 , correct to four [5 marks]
decimal places.

6. Given that the complex number 𝑧 = 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦, where 𝑥 ∈ ℝ and 𝑦 ∈ ℝ, satisfies [5 marks]
𝑧 2 = −3 + 4𝑖 and Re(𝑧) > 0. Find 𝑧.

Section B [15 marks]

Answer any one question in this section

7 (a) Find the value of 𝑘 if the system of linear equations of

𝑥 + 𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 2
2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 4
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑘𝑧 = 3 + 𝑘
have infinitely many solutions. [4 marks]

With this value of k, find the solutions. [2 marks]

1
(b) Express (2𝑟+1)(2𝑟+3) in partial fractions. [3 marks]

Hence, show that

𝑛
1 𝑛
∑ = [4 marks]
(2𝑟 + 1)(2𝑟 + 3) 3(2𝑛 + 3)
𝑟=1

Find the value of

1 [2 marks]
(2𝑟 + 1)(2𝑟 + 3)
𝑟=1

8 (a) Show that the polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 𝑥2 − 5𝑥 + 2 has a factor (𝑥 − 1) .

Hence factorise 𝑓(𝑥) completely. [5 marks]

(b) Express cos 𝑥 + √3 sin 𝑥 in the form 𝑟 cos(𝑥 − 𝛼), where 𝑟 > 0 and 0 <
1
𝛼 < 2 𝜋. [5 marks]
Hence, find the maximum value of cos 𝑥 + √3 sin 𝑥 and the
corresponding value of 𝑥 in the interval 0 < 𝑥 < 2𝜋.

(c) A complex number w = x + yi and its conjugate 𝑤 ∗ are related by

3
|𝑤 − 1| = |𝑤 ∗ + 2𝑖|. Given that the argument of w is tan−1 ( ) . Find the
2
[5 marks]
complex number w.
