Name: William Samper.

Option: Should people be fined for making discriminatory comments in public?

Introductory Paragraph with Thesis.

Hook: One of the problems that affect society are the discriminatory comments in public by
some people. There are many types of discrimination as racial, ethnic and gender.
Connecting Information: Some of the countries where there was a high degree of
discrimination are the United States and Germany. Therefore, governments must take
restrictive measures such as
Thesis Statement: people that make discriminatory comments in public have to be fined.

Body Paragraph 1
Topic Sentences: When people receive discriminatory comments affect their
self-esteem.
Introductory Quote: On many occasions people who are discriminated have problems of self-
esteem and mental health
Quote: Christie-Mizell says (quote by Munford et al (1994)) ´´Research indicates that racial
identity has a positive relationship with Self-esteem and health outcomes´´.
Explain Quote: The previous quote tells us that self-esteem is positively related to the
acceptance of people, so when people receive discriminatory comments in public, their self-
esteem tends to decrease.
Introductory Quote: Another way to understand the harm that discrimination causes on self-
esteem is
Quote: Sanders-phillips et al (2009) think ´´ Exposure to racial discrimination is also
associated with lower levels of self-esteem and self-concept in youth of color´´.
Explain Quote: This is a clear example of how young people are affected by discriminatory
comments that affect their self-esteem because they are exposed to people without moral
values.
Conclusion: In general, people who are discriminated have low self-esteem because the law
in some cases does not protect them.
Body Paragraph 2
Topic Sentences: The fines to the discriminators decrease rates of violence that are made by
acts of discrimination.
Introductory Quote: Discrimination is one of the factors that generates more violence
between people.
Quote: Sanders-phillips et al (2009) says ´´That is, higher levels of community-wide
experiences of racial discrimination were associated with higher levels of community
violence´´.
Explain Quote: In other words, a high degree of exposure to discrimination increases the
levels of violence in society, so then it is necessary to create mechanisms to help a peaceful
solution.
Introductory Quote: Discrimination can have consequences such as death because on many
occasions people come together to commit these acts that can increase violence to death.
Quote: Ahmed, Ameena et al (2007) says ´´On the other extreme are violent manifestations,
including lynching of blacks in the U.S., torture of ethnic minorities, and communal violence
and riots in India´´.
Explain Quote: One of the extremes of discrimination is to commit deaths. An example of
this is the previous appointment, where minorities are in the United States have been affected.
Conclusion: in summary, the greater the degree of discrimination, the violence made by
people increased, the levels of violence can be so high that people can die.
Counterargument:
Counterargument: Some people could say that all people have the right to express their
thoughts about others that is based of the right of free expression.
Explain: For that reason, some people are opposed to receiving fines for expressing their
thoughts, they think that their rights are being violated.
Refutation: This clearly is not true because the discriminators attack the welfare of others just
to be different. when there is discrimination, self-esteem is lowered and violence increases.
The Discrimination rates go down if governments apply fines to discriminators. People who
discriminate learn a lesson when they are fined, this fine can be both monetary and social.
Concluding Paragraph
Restated Thesis: To conclude, one of the measures that can be implemented for people who
do discriminatory acts in public is that they pay a fine.
Final thoughts/suggestions/ideas: All people have the right to be accepted, to live in a calm
and peaceful environment, therefore they must fine the discriminators. These increase the
level of violence and affect the self-esteem of people. The fines help to lower these rates and
the discriminators would have a lesson. They should think twice before insulting or
discriminating another person.
