It has been seen that many corporations, managers, leaders, and even small businesses

practice team building. Aside from the few misconceptions there are about team building, most

people know they will have an enjoyable time that will allow them to bond with other

employees. You may ask yourself what are the benefits? Aside from low turnover rates, I will

discuss a few of the positive aspects that come with team building practices. These include

improved communication, enhanced engagement within team members, heightened trust, and

overall happier employees.

At our place of work, much of our communication is routinized, which in turn masks

some of the deeper issues that come with the way we communicate. Team building activities

bring to light certain topics that need face to face discussions and allow for these things to be

spoken about in a comfortable and casual setting. If employees are frequently able to

communicate verbally, it will account for lower conflict, disagreements, and rising tensions

because each person’s voice is heard.

We all know that we’re part of a team at work and we are essentially working toward the

goal of keeping our company going. However, team building programs put a new kind of focus

on the concept of teamwork. You’re not just a team in this situation because you work together,

but moreover it will take all of the team’s members and their unique skills to work together to

complete the given task correctly and on-time. This is a great way to get to know others work

styles, strengths, and more importantly learn how to level the distribution of jobs.
Building trust is a tricky thing, this is something that is typically earned rather than given

and often it can take a long time and a number of interactions to build. This is another reason

why team building exercises are a great way to achieve trust. They can essentially condense the

process into a few hours of trust-building activities. This can be hugely beneficial to new teams

or groups who do not interact face-to-face on a regular basis but reply on one another to move

the company forward. Trust fosters collaboration among employees and is a major contributor to

high employee satisfaction rates.

The next time you quantify team building activities to be a “waste of time” you may want

to consider the additional benefits that come with these entertaining elements. While these

factors may not be immediately measurable, it has been seen how investing in your team this

way will promote positive effects in the long run. Moreover, it is important to realize that these

effects are amplified when these activities are done regularly and not just once every year or so.

Maintenance and open mindedness are key for ongoing development in the areas mentioned

previously and it is essential to emphasize the role of intentions and expectations when

considering team building activities for each unique group of individuals.
