MESSAGES
Starting it Right
A Good and Vibrant Year in the First Quarter of FY 2017-2018
It is a great privilege, and will always be, to serve as the National President of UAP for a second term.

The UAP has been my professional home – a place where I have found purpose, value, and enduring commitment
and service to our members. My main mission has been to ensure the continuance of our humble success which
will focus on the ideals of UAP which are, to UNITE all registered and licensed Filipino Architects regardless of its
affiliations, differing opinions or divergence of interests, to PROMOTE the architectural profession, and to AD-
VANCE the continuing professional development of all Filipino Architects, under the theme: UNITY, AC-
COUNTABILITY and PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE.
Throughout the years, we have exerted tons of combined efforts mixed with great sacrifices to the point of providing
huge extents of personal time, talent, including personal resources.
To all of those who have been working together with me in a common goal of coming up with a strong and vibrant
fiscal year, our current National Board of Directors, Executive Directors, Committee Chairpersons, officers and members
of Special and Standing Committees, Chapter Officers and many countless volunteers – your efforts are truly appreciated.

Greetings from Mindanao!

This article gives you an update of what the chapters' have been doing particularly for the survi-

The Journey Continues: serbisyo garantisado
A Sequel to Unity, Accountability and Professional Excellence
As the United Architects of the Philippines continues to make its mark in the annals of professional excellence, 2016-
2017 merits special attention. Our formidable undertaking to become a nationally recognized professional organization
has been rewarded.
The 2017 PRC’s Most Outstanding Professional Organization (APO) Award brings with it an obligation to acknowledge
not only the vision and hard work of those at the UAP National Office, but also the steadfast encouragement and support of the
general membership for which we are indebted.
As your Secretary General, I had several broad tasks in front of me when I assumed the position in 2016 and in July of 2017:
to continue the amazing momentum established by my predecessors, to find new opportunities that would engage the Office of
the Secretary General and the UAP in more corporate social responsibility engagements; and to begin to set a long- term course
for this great UAP in terms of quality service to members, efficient work force and effective communication. At the first quarter
of the Fiscal Year 2017-2018, we initiated the following:

UAP Sugbu Welcomes New

Members, Adopts a School
By Arch. Karl Aries Emerson F. Cabilao, FUAP

The new UAP Sugbu members, all 55 of them, were given a grand welcome
during the chapter’s August general membership meeting (GMM) held at the
B|G Hotel along Parkmall Drive, Mandaue City, Cebu. They took their oaths of
membership in front of the chapter officers, led by President Elise Demiar, the
members and their inducting officer, UAP National Auditor Eldred Caesar Tan,
FUAP.
The new members immediately experienced the professionally-enriching character
of Sugbu GMM’s as they lis- tened and took part in the discus-
sions about the architect- engineer relationship as allied
professionals in the field of de- sign and construction. On the
panel were architect-civil engi- neer “twins” Kelvin and Kris Go
as well as UAP Sugbu’s past president and past District C1
Director Emmanuel Jesus Avila, FUAP. The panelists shared
their experiences in the practice as fledgling professionals which gave important
insights to the new architects in the hall. VP-Operations Neil Menjares and past presi-

Sinlayan Dabaw Chapter is the 8th chapter in the Davao Region and the 10th
in District D1. The formation of the group was brought about because of the
growing number of new architects in Southern Mindanao, where five architecture
schools are located, and added to the fact that Davao City has been made as test-
ing venue for the Architecture Licensure Examination.
The chapter’s nomenclature is derived from the local vernacular word,
“sinlayan,” which means beacon of light. Since most of its members are faculty
and Masteral students of the University of the Philippine- Mindanao, the name is
in line with the chapter’s thrust to be a source of enlightenment and knowledge to
architects and aspiring architects through researches and academic lectures.
