MATH
CONVERTING FROM ONE UNIT OF
MEASURE TO ANOTHER

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Hello! How does your past lesson my dear learner? Did you enjoy
answering the exercises? Hope you got a high score and is now ready
to take our new lesson. Today you will study and learn how to convert
from one unit to another unit of measurement.

Let’s Learn This

This learning module deals with converting from one unit of

measure to another. The activities which you will walk through will help
you see the relationships of the common metric units of measure for
length, mass and volume.
Therefore, as you go this module, you should be able to:
 Visualize converting from one unit of measure to another.
 Convert from one unit to another unit of measurement.
 Write the appropriate unit of measure.

Let’s Try This

A. Name the larger unit

1. 1 meter or 1 kilometer
2. 1 centimeter or 1 millimeter
3. 1 gram or 1 kilogram
4. 1 liter or 1 millimeter
5. 1 decimeter or 1 centimeter

- 27 -
B. Choose the best estimate

6. Length of a guitar
a. 1 km. b. 1 m. c. 1 cm.

7. Small can of tomato juice

a. 50 ml. b. 50 L c. 50 kl.

8. Distance between two cities.

a. 50 km. b. 50 m. c. 50 cm

9. Bucket of water
a. 5 ml. b. 5 L c. 5 kl.

10. Carton of milk

a. 1 kl. b. 1 L c. 1 ml.

Let’s Study This

Many years ago there were no

standard units of measure. People use
some parts of the body in measuring
length or distance. Today we use the
standard units of measure in the metric
system. It is based on the decimal system
that is on multiples of 10.

A. The basis unit of length for the metric system is the meter (m).
other commonly used units include the kilometer (km), the
centimeter (cm) and the millimeter (mm)
Remember:
1km = 1000m 1m = 10 dm
1hm = 100m 1m = 100cm
1dam = 10m 1m = 1000mm

- 28 -
B. The most commonly used metric units of mass are the kilograms
(kg), the gram (g) and the milligram (mg). The basic unit of mass
is the gram.
Remember:
1kg = 1000g 1g = 10dg
1hm = 100g 1g = 100cg
1dag = 10g 1g = 1000mg

C. The most commonly used metric units of capacity or volume are

the liter (L) and the millimeter (ml), where liter is the basic unit of
capacity.
Remember:
1kl = 1000L 1L = 10dL
1hL = 100L 1L = 100cL
1daL = 10L 1L = 1000mL

Remember that every unit in the metric system is 10 times bigger

or 10 times smaller than the unit next to it. So think of the place
value in our numeration system. Then use prefixes instead of
place value named.
lliter, gram,meter - basic (ones)

centi - hundredths

milli - thousandths
hecto - hundreds
kilo - thousands

deci - tenths
deca - tens

• To change the metric units, multiply or divide by powers of 10

Examples:
a. To convert 4200 cm to meters, write the units in
order from largest to smallest.

Converting cm to m requires
moving 2 positions to the left.
Thus, 4200 cm = 42.00 or
Since 1m = 100cm then divide (from smaller to bigger units)
4200 ÷ 100 = 42
Therefore, 4200 cm = 42m

b. To convert 32m to kilometers, write the units in

order from largest to smallest.

Converting m to km requires
moving 3 positions to the left.
Thus, 32m =

Since 1km = 1000m, so divide (from smaller to bigger units)

32 ÷ 1000 = 0.032
Therefore 32m = 0.032 km

c. To convert 3.5 kilograms to grams

Converting kg to g requires
moving 3 positions to the right
Thus, 3.5 kg = 3500 g or
Since 1kg = 1000 g so, multiply (from bigger to smaller units)
3.5 x 1000 = 3500
Therefore, 3.5 kg = 3500 g

d. To convert 2.43 L = 2430 ml or

Converting L to ml requires
moving 3 positions to the right
Thus, 2.43 L =

Since 1L = 1000 mL so multiply (from bigger to smaller unit)

- 30 -
2.43L x 1000 = 2430
Therefore 2.43L = 2430mL

Here are other examples:

1.) Change 4.2m to centimeters. We are changing from larger unit to
a smaller unit.
Since 1m = 100cm then
4.2 x 100 = 420
4.2m = 420cm
2.) Change 24ml to liters. We are changing smaller unit to a larger
unit.
Since, 1L = 1000ml, then
24ml ÷ 1000 = 0.024
24ml = 0.024L

Let’s Do This

A. Choose the most reasonable unit of measure for each object.

1. Width of a paper clip ( a. m b. cm c. km )

2. Thickness of rubber band ( a. mm b. m c. km )
3. Length of your classroom ( a. km b. cm c. m )
4. A gallon of oil ( a. L b. ml c. cL )
5. A sack of rice ( a. kg b. g c. mg )

B. Complete and answer the following

6. 4000m = km

7. 14kg = g

8. 5.73kl = L

9. How many millimeters is 1cm?

10. How many milligrams is 10 centigrams?

- 31 -
Let’s Do More

A. Using milligram, gram or kilogram, name the most reasonable

unit for weighing each of the following.

1. Pinch of salt __________

2. Sacks of potatoes __________
3. Can of soup ___________
4. Box of cereal ____________
5. Car ____________

Let’s Remember This

Multiply by 10, 100, or 1000 to change

larger units to smaller units.

Divide by 10, 100 or 1000 to change

smaller units to larger units.
